  • Stunning display piece with a fiddly build.
This lego set is a really great display piece. Part of the LEGO ideas series, meaning a fan designed it and got the lego community to vote for it to be manufactured. I bought this knowing my son would like it. I didn't know how the build worked without reading reviews before ordering it (or before dropping it on the floor when cleaning his room...warning, careful when dusting around this! - it may fall apart if you even look at it the wrong way.) The premise is that you first build the stand. Then build the boat, build part of the bottle, attach the boat to the bottle and then finish building the bottle around the boat. The bottom of the bottle is simple enough to put together and is sturdy. Attaching the ship to the bottle and having it stay in place in the bottle without the ship falling part is tedious. Attach it to the bottom and the bow falls off. Try again and a mast or two comes loose or spins around. Try again and the stud falls off the bottom of the bottle where it attaches together. After its attached together, building the rest of the bottle around the boat also has to be done with care so that you don't knock parts off the ship. Probably the most fiddly set ever, so not good for those easily frustrated, but it looks really great when put together. Designed for a display piece on a desk or shelf with occasional rebuilds for fun - the ship isn't really meant to be played with unless the person likes lots of rebuilds. That can be fun for some kids. On this one, if your kid is into that, watch for all of the "water" pieces that can and will go everywhere. Looks really cool as a display piece - most impressive display I have seen to-date. The set is very detailed. The stopper and seal on the neck of the bottle and the compass add a lot of visual interest. I would definitely recommend this - one of my favorite sets ever - but younger builders will likely need some help. ... show more

  • Really cool LEGO set
One of the more unique LEGO sets out there, in my opinion. It is well executed and was fun to build, right down to the loose 'water' pieces and the compass needle that really rotates! (Compass isn't actually functional, though.) If you like LEGO and maritime themes or just ships in bottles, you can't go wrong with this one. ... show more

  • Awesome build, super fun gift for the right person!
I bought this LEGO set for my 23 year old boyfriend and he absolutely loved it. We built it within a couple of nights, taking turns to put pieces on and it was a great experience. The set doubles as a fun activity and an awesome center piece in an office, study, or anywhere else it can fit. The instructions are clear, the LEGO pieces themselves were durable and sturdy; there were no issues while building at all. The price is kind of high, but I think that’s just a “you pay for the name” type deal. Either way, it’s worth it for the look on his face when opening the gift and the smile that came with it. I’d recommend this LEGO set to anyone 13 and up; and for someone who loves quirky and unique decorations, because it’s definitely not a toy. ... show more

  • Beautiful
This is a beautiful Lego set. Worth to buy. It’s not super large but big enough to be a nice for display in the office. Was a fun set to build as well.

  • Ignore these unnecessary steps…
Looks much better if you do not add the layer of flat clear blocks between the bottle pieces the directions tell you to use. They add stability but also had ugly thick areas around the center and make it harder to see the ship inside. After building I went back and removed them and it seems to be sturdy enough (and looks a lot better). Also, the brick configuration they tell you to put on top (above the ship)….put it on the back so it’s not as noticeable. Not sure why they didn’t just use the same configuration as the other three sides. Weird. Compare my pic to other submissions for comparison and you’ll see what I mean. ... show more

  • Great mother/son weekend build
This set is sooo cool! My 9 year old son and I just finished it this morning. Took us, all together, about 4 hours. We took turns building the ship but he got too frustrated working on the bottle so he had me do it. To be fair, it was a little difficult because if I pressed too hard, it all broke apart. But once that was done, it was smooth sailing from there and he ended up doing most the base by himself. All and all, I loved this set because it was something we built together and now it’s displayed on a bookcase instead of just thrown in the LEGO box in his closet with the rest of his other sets. I really enjoyed this Ideas collection and look forward to future releases ... show more
