  • Perfect! Just what I always wanted!
When I purchased my first Leatherman PST in 1996, what I really wanted was a Rebar, although I didn't know it at the time. It took this long for Leatherman to finally get around to producing it. Although the PST was a well made and useful multi-tool, it lacked certain implements I would have wished for, and those it had did not lock. What I liked was the light weight and pocket size, and still keep it for travel to places where locking blades are not street legal, but I moved on. My next LT was the Super Tool, which added a serrated blade and saw to the tool mix, also everything locked. OTOH, it was larger, almost double the weight of the PST, and the unlocking method was slow, awkward and potentially dangerous (although I never actually got cut). Despite its drawbacks, I settled for the ST and spent years with one hanging on my belt. It turned out to be endlessly useful for all sorts of everyday tasks and got me through several "emergencies," as well. Eventually, I upgraded to a Super Tool 300, basically an updated and much improved version of the original, but even heavier. Belt carried, it was manageable, but I would have preferred a smaller, lighter weight version for every day carry, pocketable, basically a Super Tool scaled down. Apparently, I was not the only one, because at last Leatherman responded with the Rebar, just what I had been waiting for. ASAP, I ordered one from an Amazon vendor and eagerly awaited its delivery. Then, I read several negative online reviews about the tool, complaining about the build quality. Oops? Much concerned, I went to a nearby sports chain store to examine one they had on display. To my dismay, it seemed to confirm the negatives. The tool exterior was nice and shiny, but something about the finish seemed off, hard to describe but the tool looked chintzy, leaving me with an impression of corners cut, careless assembly and poor quality control. Implements were much too stiff to draw out easily, not all parts lined up, and the pivots very gritty. From experience I knew this degree of resistance would not free up to an acceptable level even after oiling and spending hours working the hell out of it in front of the TV set while watching "Antiques Road Show" re-runs (wife's choice). Altogether, this Rebar sample did resemble a cheap knockoff, as one critic described it, and I started kicking myself around the block for having made the purchase in too great haste. When at last Fedex delivered the package, with some trepidation I opened the box and brought forth the Rebar. It was perfect. Unlike the demo I had handled, the implements were "Leatherman tight," which means a bit stiff at first but would break in with use (or from playing with it while sitting in front of the TV watching "Antiques Road Show" ) and keep a reasonable level from then on. Everything looked better, parts fit as they should, implements opened and closed precisely, as well as any Leatherman product I have owned. Mine came with the leather box sheath, which looks substantial, much like the original ones from the late '90s, but only time will tell how well it will hold up. Frankly, I can't account for the bad experience of other Rebar purchasers, or the defective demonstrator I handled, except possibly poor QC in its initial run. By now I hope this has been corrected. Rather than returning their Rebars and swearing off, I would urge dissatisfied customers to send their samples to Leatherman, which has just about the best warranty service ever. On two occasions I sent multi-tools to them for service, one clearly damaged by abuse and not a manufacturing defect, the other needing a minor adjustment. Both were fixed and returned within 10 days, no charge. After a few weeks of using it on all the jobs for which I normally use a multi-tool, the Rebar has met and exceeded expectations. To my delight, even though it was smaller, I was able to access all implements without having to remove my work gloves, an advantage I always appreciate with my other full size Leatherman tools. Also, as expected, it has broken in nicely and now operates right and tight. It was a wish come true, if 16 years late. Honeymoon on. ... show more

  • Pocket-sized beast of a tool. Highly recommended.
Why you should buy the Rebar: • Excellent build quality. USA made. No play, no rattling, no machining marks, everything is smooth and precise. Solid steel construction, no plastic parts. • Good selection of tools. Replaceable wire-cutters. All tools lock in place. • Comfortable handles. Rounded-off edges provide a nice grip for extended usage. • Size and weight. This is the lightest of Leatherman's full-size tools. Can comfortably rest in a pocket or on your belt, while still having most tools you'll need, plus one of the best plier heads in the multitool world. • Performance: Surprisingly strong pliers for its size. 154CM wire-cuters, the exact pair on the larger tools, like the Surge. Much more powerful than the pinch-type on the Wingman. D2 tool steel Philips head. Very durable and strong. Sharp blades, beefy can-opener and awl, full-size file, very aggressive saw. • 25-year warranty from Leatherman. As long as you don't go crazy with it, you will be passing it down to your kids. Why you should not buy the Rebar: While an excellent tool, the Rebar may not fit your needs as well as another multitool might. By design, this will not appeal to everybody. • All tools are accessible by opening the tool up. This has its pros and cons. It makes the tool smoother, with fewer edges that could catch on your pants/pockets, and not as prone to dirt etc, not to mention that one-handed opening blades are illegal in many countries. Depending on which tools you will use the most, the Rebar's design may not suit your needs. • No scissors. Having no scissors by choice of design is not a flaw (having ineffective scissors would be a flaw). If you want scissors in a multitool it should be obvious that the Rebar should not be your first choice. • No spring-loaded pliers. Like having no scissors, having no spring in the pliers is a design choice. They chose to make it like it is. If spring-loaded pliers are high in your priority list, this is not the tool you are looking for. • No pocket clip. Though easily carried in a pocket, it cannot actually be clipped on one. The Rebar is not a one-handed, rapid deployment tool, so it would make sense not to have a pocket clip on it. You could add one if you really wanted, though. • It's too small for you. While very capable, there are larger models by Leatherman that may better suit your heavy-duty needs. Conclusion: Do your research before you buy a multitool. Set your priorities first, and buy a multitool that covers them adequately. Don't buy a multitool and try to adjust your needs to it. Think about what's important to you. Are you buying it to use it, or just because it looks cool? Are you buying it for work, hobbies, or just to have one? Are you buying it for the pliers, and considering everything else a bonus? Are you buying it mainly for the blades? The Rebar does not fit everyone's needs, but there are many different designs out there, so there should be something for everyone. Check prices, check reviews, and if possible, go to a shop and get to hold it in your hands. Finding the ideal multitool, with the perfect tool selection, quality, ergonomics, and price, is very difficult. You will probably have to buy a few. But eventually, you'll find something that is almost perfect. For me, it's the Rebar. Photos: 1. Surge and Rebar pliers. Note the same size on the wire-cutters. 2. Surge, Rebar, Wingman, Micra. 3. Rebar and Micra closed. 4. Rebar and Wingman pliers. 154CM shear-type replaceable wire-cutters on the Rebar, non-replaceable pinch-type on the Wingman. ... show more

  • Exceptional Multitool at a Great Price
Style: Black with MOLLE Sheath
The multitool is a fantastic addition to my toolkit, and it lives up to the stellar reputation of the Leatherman brand. Known for their quality and durability, Leatherman products have always impressed me, and this multitool is no exception. One of the standout features is its premium replaceable wire cutters, which are incredibly sharp and efficient. They handle tough materials with ease, making this tool invaluable for both everyday tasks and more demanding projects. The inclusion of a saw adds even more versatility, allowing me to tackle a wide range of tasks without reaching for additional tools. The compact and sturdy design ensures it fits comfortably in my hand and can withstand heavy use. It's the perfect size to carry with me, whether I'm at work, camping, or tackling DIY projects at home. What makes this multitool even more impressive is the fantastic price at which it was offered. It's rare to find such high quality and functionality at such an affordable cost. I'm thrilled with this purchase and highly recommend this multitool to anyone in need of a reliable, all-in-one tool solution. ... show more
