Our yard's soil is very compacted. I'm not sure what happened before we moved in, but we do not use the yard that often as we are inevitably gathered on the decks surrounding the pool. My wife and I have been dabbling in gardening for the last two years now, and our soil is very difficult to manage. I ordered a 3 tined aerator a year ago. Played with it for about 2 days and it has frankly sat since that time. It is heavy and difficult to operate as it is the kind that pulls up plugs that look like wine bottle corks – if you can get in deep enough to work. So this year I looked for a lighter and easier model that only left small punctures rather than actual holes and I found it. From Halilus, it features 15 thin, spring loaded tines that are sandwiched between two metal plates for precision and self-cleaning. The tines resemble large nails as much as anything, with threaded tops where they attach and secure to the frame. It weighs only 5.5 lbs. including head. It is made of heavy duty steel and has a cushioned “T bar” for it's handle. The handle is adjustable from 33” to 36” for additional comfort. To use, I recommend giving your soil a good soaking to make penetration easier. (I used my misting hose.) Then let the 3” X 5” plates and the approximately 3 inch spikes do their job. Simply step on the top plate and push. Barring large roots or rock or two you will be well on your way to a newly nourished and breathing lawn in no time. As for security, the obvious point of concern would be the “ultra sharp” spikes. However they are only dangerous when in the ground. When above ground the recede into the spring action head, points flush with the bottom plate. Assembly is very simple, easy and can be done by one individual. (If you have all the pieces. I was short the handle bolt and nut and had to find replacements in the garage.) It might take you 5 minutes; ten if you are talking. The manufacturer has provided the tools you will need, 5 extra spikes in case you hit something really hard plus a kind of inexpensive pair of plastic gloves that might stop a blister on a good day. But the real star here is the device itself. Easy to use without exhausting yourself. Safe to the extent that 15 ultra sharp spikes can be safe. And very well constructed. Looking at similar models, pricing seems to be on the lower end of the range. For these reasons I am giving this 15 tine, spring loaded, soil aerator 5 Stars. ... show more

I’m giving this the five stars for what it is. It was extremely easy to put together, pushing it into the ground and pulling it out was a breeze. Just realize that if you plan on doing a larger lawn, this will take you FOREVER. Better use for small sections or compacted areas (like under a swingset) It seems to be built really well and as I did a section of my yard, it felt like it was good quality and didn’t struggle to use it. For the money, it’s a good little piece of yard equipment. It stores straight up, so it doesn’t take up much room in the garage. Overall, I think it’s great value for what it is and for small sections—don’t waste your time and use it on your whole yard (unless you have no other option, I guess.) ... show more

I didn't know what to expect when I ordered the halilus lawn aerator tool, and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the spike aerator received. The fit and finish of this tool is excellent, and it comes with 5 spare aerator spikes, the one bolt needed to attach the orange handle extension, a pair of gloves, two stamped steel wrenches and an instruction sheet. The build quality is better than I expected, and it's painted well. The spike head is made from two thick pieces of steel plate with bolt in spikes. It measures 9 7/8" across by 4 1/4" front to back, and the spikes are arranged in three rows spaced 2 1/8" apart and 1 1/2" front to back. The orange handle extension bolts to it with one bolt, then the handle slides onto the extension, snaps into one of three sets of holes to adjust the handle height and it's ready to use. I have some problem areas that won't grow decent grass, and have tried everything short of tilling them up and starting over. This tool is inexpensive compared to the wholesale renovation of sections of the lawn, and it looked easy to use so I decided to give it a try. The aerator punches holes in slightly moist loam easily. I found that it sometimes got stuck and wouldn't fully retract. The retraction springs are strong but sometimes they needed a little help. It took little more than the effort needed to lift the tool to the next spot to free it, and once you get the hang of it you can move on at a decent pace. I was able to aerate roughly 500 square feet of lawn in a half hour or so. It's not effortless but it not very taxing either. I'm hopeful that this aerator will help to rejuvenate the problem sections of my lawn. It's a well built tool, and if aerating the soil works it'll save the cost of replacing sections that aren't growing well. ... show more
