This book is amazing! The hardcover is very durable and the pages are pretty thick (signs of value and quality craftsmanship 😊) The historical introductions are not too long and not too short. They give the reader a deeper appreciation for what this wisdom was birthed out of. Being a Protestant, I purchased this book after reading “The Sayings of the Desert Fathers” and “Secrets of the Hidden God”. I’ve been on a journey to discover the wisdom of ancient Christian mysticism and asceticism. This book it both challenging and enlightening. I respect the devotional expressions of different faith traditions but still hold to the teaching that we are saved “By grace through faith”. So while reading this, I’m challenged to offer my life as MORE of a living sacrifice, with greater awareness that the Lord desires to possess ALL of my heart, soul and strength, and asceticism and contemplation are supreme avenues upon which to offer these to the Lord. I also find myself grieving for the extreme deprivation and suffering these brothers endured to be acceptable to God, when CHRIST justifies us freely through His life and sacrifice upon the Cross. The Bible says the man who seeks to justify himself has fallen from grace 😞 I pray that their sufferings were not in vain but we’re done from a place of knowing God’s love is available ONLY in the person of Christ and not in our works or offerings. I don’t judge them... if anything, they have inspired me to LOVE the Lord with more and more of my heart ❤️ ... show more

This book really is exceptional. The book is high-quality all around, the paper is very high quality. The font/text is very deep black/red so it is easy to read. Not a cheap book by any means. The content is of course amazing for anyone who is trying to excel in the spiritual life, and this was the main reason I bought it. I find the desert monastic had a keen sense for overcoming certain faults, and this book is an essential addition to anyone who wishes to attain a high level of prayer/virtue. Saint John Climacus' book is both masterfully produced and also an unmatchable guide on the path of theosis. Whether you are orthodox Christian, some other Christian, or even of another faith, I believe you will find this book to be insightful and enlightening should you choose to read it.

I am not a theologian/philosopher nor work on any book-related job here, but this book is literally one of the best ones I have seen in terms of both its content and its book quality per se. If I got the money, I would purchase every other book published by the monastery to be honest. But for now, I will buy one by one according to my own budget or so. ... show more
