  • Very happy with these strings
Color: Original Version
Although bass is not my primary instrument I have been dabbling with it for years, and every time I play bass the strings I tear my fingers up (... to be fair I stop before it becomes a horror movie bloody finer massacre) At rehearsal a few weeks ago I tried my bass player's p bass. The strings were black, and smooth. They felt great on my fingers. The bass sounded great as well. The very next day another musician friend offered to let me hold an imitation p-bass with "regular" strings on it. I asked if I could change the strings and he has no problem with that. So I got a hold of my bass player and asked what he uses, and it's these Labella's. I immediately ordered them on Amazon. When they arrived I strung them up, and now for the first time (can't believe it took this long to figure this out) I have a bass I enjoy playing! It's been about 2 months so far. We'll see how long they hold up, but I have faith it will be a long time. Thanks Labella for making a great set of strings and Amazon for getting them here quick and easy. I am considering trying their guitar strings too. I would most definitely suggest to a friend. ... show more

  • Great for the warm, low tones
Color: Original Version
Although I initially did not like the slick feel of these, as I play them the oils from my fingers are giving them a grit that I do like. What I find especially great is that I can drop the low end of my 4-string down as low as C, perhaps lower, without any buzz. There is something magical about playing in a CGCF tuning, and I appreciate these strings all the more for it. I also play on D'Addario tape-wound strings, which I may prefer, if only for the slightly more tactile feel of the strings. These strings, however, are great, and I would buy them again. ... show more

  • La Bella Tape Wound bass strings review
Color: Original Version
These are great. I'm not a bass player but two of my bass players use them. One plays an fretless upright Takamine bass - a pretty rare beast not unlike a small upright double bass, and he uses nothing but these La Bellas. He hasn't changes them in about 5 years and they still sound great. We play mostly swing music and he's a very busy player, no picks of course. They have a lovely mellow sound and long sustain. My other bass player (coincidentally my wife) plays an old original Hofner violin bass (the McCartney model)and the La Bellas sound fantastic. The bass doesn't have much sustain, and the nylon tape-wound strings seem to give it a little more than it would otherwise have. She's had the same set on for 3 or 4 years. A tip for you here though - we bought a short scale Danelectro bass and tried to fit the La Bellas, but in cutting them to fit we found that if you make the cut on the actual string, rather than the purple shrink-wrapping at the ends, all the tape unravels....and good luck winding it up again!. An expensive lesson. I don't know if they make a shorter scale version of these strings...but we are all big fans of them here in Wellington. ... show more

Color: Original Version
I have these on my PJ and the lighter set (45-105) on a frankenstein fretless. They are perfect for both applications. They are brighter than flats and with better articulation. Their feel is amazing: the lower tension makes fretting a breeze and there is absolutely no string noise. With my basses anyway, they produce a very passable upright tone, especially in the upper register. They have maintained their tone well (3 months daily playing at this point) with no appreciable loss of character. I have had no problems with the tape separating or any breakage. They will be my go-to strings for these two basses; I have yet to try them on my AEB although that may be next. However, they are probably not quite aggressive (?) enough for my stingray and the types of music I use it for. Absolutely recommend giving them a go. ... show more

  • Best overall string

Been using zLaBella Tapewounds for 40 years, playing everything from jazz to Beatles, on everything from a '65 Hofner to a '69 Precion & Jazz Fretless. Always flawless performance, even tone and response, total reliability - I should have such qualities!

  • Very satisfied
Color: Original Version
These are the first nylon tape wounds that I've ever purchased, so I can't really compare them to other brands. I put them on my G&L L2000, and they sound great -- very tight and warm. Can't really imagine replacing them with anything different when they eventually die. Only problem was that because of the thicker gauge, I needed to file the nut to make them fit. But I have no regrets. The strings have the right tension for my taste, and I probably would have found the lighter gauge option of this string a bit too bendy. ... show more
