I spent a long time researching before making a purchase. In the end, I wanted wood, not plastic. This swift sets up easily and works very well. It is my first swift - and I really put it to work winding my stash. I wish I had purchased a swift and ball winder YEARS ago! I have always relied on using the back of a chair and struggling through. This swift was a pleasure to use. I have been so impressed with this winder! It winds smooth as silk, it’s quick, and makes it so easy to attach my hanks of yarn. I haven’t had a hank not fit it yet, and once on the winder, they never slip. This is beautifully made and there are no slivers of wood that could snag your yarn. It is shipped in an overly large, bright orange plastic, mesh-like “umbrella” cover which may be intended to dispose once you receive the package, but I trimmed mine down a little and use it as a way to protect the winder when I’m storing it between uses. As. winders go, this isn’t the cheapest, but nor is it the most expensive. What I can tell you is don’t spend the extra money for something that is supposed to look like a piece of furniture, when it isn’t going to do the job. Great swift. I was surprised how smooth and easy to work it is while still being solid and well-made. Lightweight and not overly heavy like others I have had in the past. My only suggestion, put a handle on it for hand-winding from a ball back to a skein! Thanks.

I tried winding a skein of yarn with a spinning office chair & my ball winder & it was a nightmare. I couldn't keep the yarn tension consistent so I couldn't pull the yarn from the center. I ended up with a huge tangle that I had to undo before winding again once I got this yarn swift. totally worth the money if you tend to buy skeins of yarn online. if you buy from a local yarn store, they might have a winding service so then you don't have to buy your own. unfortunately I don't live close to a yarn store that sells actual wool yarn & I often have to frog my projects because I'm still learning how to size my knitted clothing correctly. ... show more

This is a useful device, but I have found that the sliding mechanism does get stuck and will make it harder to open up the umbrella. It got to the point where I almost couldn't open it. But, after I applied some wood polish to the pole, it is moving much easier. Others have suggested wax or oil, which I may try in the future. Other than that, it makes winding up skeins much easier and it is one of the more reasonably priced swifts. The quality is pretty good and is a sturdy device, definitely worth the price. ... show more
