  • Excellent, Reasonably-Priced Hybrid Knee Walker
Color: Blue
OPERATION Once assembled (see below) the BlessReach knee walker's soft tires roll smoothly with almost no effort. It has no trouble travelling over and between ceramic tile, rugs, carpets and door thresholds. With slightly more effort it rolls over packed gravel and grass. Rolling over raised edges works best when the edges are approached by both front wheels at the same time. Like all knee walkers, it cannot turn in a really tight radius, but it provides ample maneuverability. The handle bars move easily from side to side, so steering the knee walker is easy. The product appears to have excellent build quality. The brakes, including the lock buttons, work well. The brake lever cables on the handle grips merge to a single cable just below the handle bars. Therefore, pulling on either brake handle has the same braking effect on the rear wheels, although one's grip may be stronger in one hand than the other. The single brake disk connects to both rear wheels. Pushing the brake lock button on either side will have the same effect if the brake cables are the same length. My left and right cables were not exactly the same length, so the brake lock on one side was slightly stronger than the other. Nevertheless, both worked well to keep the scooter from moving. Since only one of the two brakes locks needs to be applied, the user can press the lock button with one hand while squeezing the brakes with the other hand. The knee pad was firm, but not so firm as to be uncomfortable when moving around the house. Longer trips or extended time spent kneeling on the scooter would probably benefit from an added cushion. A cushion would also protect the knee pad. Abrasion by a cast or boot may be the reason for several negative reviews of the knee pad. The carry bag seems well-made and fits easily on the scooter's bag attachment points. A Velcro fastener is provided, but likely will only needed when travelling beyond the house. ASSEMBLY The knee scooter components arrived in excellent condition. Unlike most assembly manuals, there was no illustrated parts list, although there was a photo without annotation. No tools are required, although a Phillips screw driver may be needed (see below). Assembly was straightforward, although the terminology used in the assembly manual was unconventional. The manual calls the items used with the "screws" to attach the front wheels to the "front wheel rod" as "gaskets". Unless the product has changed since the manual was printed, the supplied lock washers are what go between the front wheels and the front axle. An Allen wrench was provided to tighten the bolts to the axle. Unfortunately, a smaller Allen wrench that is needed to tighten the shock absorber bolt was not supplied. A quick-release bolt clamps the front axle to the steering assembly, allowing the bulky front wheels to be removed when space is at a premium. The axle is fastened by a small plastic-covered nut that is not as easy to hold in place as the other connectors. The "screws" used to fasten the kneeling pad to the scooter are easy-to-use thumbscrews. The hexagonal-headed bolts used to fasten the handle bar and the kneeling pad to the desired heights fit into the same-shaped holes in the scooter's frame, so care needs to be taken to insert the bolts in the correct direction. More space can be saved by removing the bolt supporting the knee pad and either lowering or removing the knee pad. The handle bar column hinges down for transportation or storage. The latch that secures the steering column in line with the lower section of the scooter's front wheel assembly (the "standpipe") is called the "buckle" in the manual. Pushing the latch up against the frame locks the handle bar in position for use. Pulling it back allows the handle bars to fold down. A threaded screw is located within the latch mechanism. A Phillips screwdriver can be used tighten a latch that is too loose to stay in place (as mine was) or loosen it if it is too tight to easily unlatch (as has been reported in other reviews). There is a rotating plastic lock that prevents the latch from opening once it is slid into the side of the latch, so there is no need to tighten the latch so much that it is hard to undo. Overall, this is an excellent product that is easy to assemble and operate. ... show more

  • Solid Unit, nice looking
Color: Purple
Overview: I am a 45 year old woman that had to have foot surgery. I was unwilling to use a walker when returning to a public space. This unit is very visually pleasant to me. I chose the purple and black model. Notes from my assembler husband: he put it together in about 10 mins. Please be aware from our assembly error: that the washer on the wheel assembly does not lock onto the bolt as it appears it should; but instead is to be turned over and used as a Spacer between the bolt and wheel. You'll know you've assembled it correctly if the front wheels move freely. I read reviews before purchasing that stated the buyers had "greased/oiled" all connections (which I brought up after the initial (wrong) wheel assembly made the movements very difficult and clumsy) but my husband maintains that oiling is not needed as the unit has sealed bearings. After he corrected the wheel assembly, I found all mechanisms smooth and fluid with no creaking or other sounds. Usability and Feels: The larger tires are smooth and absorb a lot of the movement and there is also a shock absorber that is adjustable. Also, I won't have to maintain air pressure in them as they don't require air. Thresholds that I needed to lift the previous walker over, this scooter easily rolls over now with little notice. I am able to travel over carpet, tile, wooden floors, concrete, grass, sand and gravel drives with no real difference in controls. Obviously, steering is effected in grass, sand, and gravel; hold on tighter.) The knee pad is extremely comfortable with no further padding needed (I have fibromyalgia so had already bought a universal cover that I've already returned as unnecessary. ) The handes are easily gripped and the brakes are easily applied with little pressure required. The brakes are applied to only the rear wheels and are exceptional. Do not go fast and crank the brake. Bad idea (ask hubby ;) The brakes also have a locking feature to "park" the unit that is easily engaged and disengaged. Maneuverability: zero. Think 3-point turn for all corrections. Personally, I pick up the seat and turn the scooter to where I want it to point. Just picking up the back is pretty light duty (its not heavy for just this adjustment, about the weight of a gallon milk carton, but read about total unit weight below. ) Bathroom stalls are a real hassle and they would be regardless of this scooter's turn radius, but I do want to make it plain that walkers are miles better for bathroom stalls over scooters; so that you're aware if you are transitioning from walker to scooter.) Weight: it's heavy-duty and also heavy itself. I am able-bodied, other than this damn cast, but I believe I will struggle to self-load/unload this unit from my car without damage to me, it, or my car. I didn't pick up on this fact from other reviews and thought that since the handlebar folds down for "easy transport" that the scooter would be easily transported. I no longer believe that. [If I find it easier once actually performing the transport work for myself, I will update my review.] Lifting the back end is light enough but the entire unit's weight is quite a lot and ungainly. I believe we will add strapping/handles to be applied to the closed unit to assist me. Features: bag on front is lovely and since it is not a see-through basket, gives some privacy. There is a side mesh which I slide my cell phone into. I added a drink holder sold at Academy for bicycles. Both the bag on front and the rear of the seat have a strip of reflective tape which is a nice touch. ... show more

  • Heavy Duty
Color: Purple
Pros: It allows me to walk my dogs while in a foot cast. It’s solid and well built. Assembly was easy enough, but don’t tighten the wheel bolts all the way or the wheels don’t turn. Knee rest is absorbent and comfortable. Brakes work very well. Scooter works well on smooth surfaces. Neutral input: I do wish the knee cushion came with a microfiber cover and handles could use grips. I get warm quickly. Once I started sweating my knee slipped everywhere and hands slip on handle. Brakes work well… almost too well. Use them gently or you can fall. Cons: it is a little heavy. Now I’m not weak nor strong, but this is made for someone with limited mobility, so I wonder if it could be well-built but lighter for travel purposes. I can’t imagine it being as easy as they show to fold and load into a car and get out with my foot casted to my knee. The wheels work well on smooth surfaces..ONLY! I can maneuver it over pebbles, but it does not do well on slightly uneven sidewalks and do not hit a landscape rock larger than sand because it doesn’t kick it out, the wheels stop cold and you will fall as the scooter tips over. It’s a little bulky for using in a smaller house. It’s not rolling well on carpet or even short grass areas. Overall, once I used it a few times and understood its limitations, I have been mostly successfully using it to walk my dogs while in a cast with a broken foot. I don’t need it inside, so it’s serving its purpose. ... show more
