Description

This kit includes the tools necessary to tone and trace wires in common wiring systems. This premium tone generator has Angled Bed of Nails (ABN) clips that securely grip the cable. Tone Generator emits five distinct tones. An RJ11 plug easily connects to telephone or RJ45 data jacks for toning. The toner, also checks continuity and polarity that are indicated by clearly labeled LEDs. The probe traces with the tones signal. The adjustable-volume speaker amplifies the tone. The 3.5 mm jack allows for headphones (sold separately) to be attached in noisy environments. The probe has a tool-less non-metallic durable replaceable tip. The probe enables testing in distribution blocks without disturbing other services.

I had moved breakers and wires around in my in house breaker panel and long story short, my kitchen AC is on a single breaker and the outlet had no power anymore. Drove myself nuts for days trying to figure out what I did wrong. Finally purchased this toner and watched Youtube videos and still had no luck, very frustrating . Till today, 4-27-25, heres what I did to trace a 20 amp wire from the outlet to the breaker box. Shut off the main breaker ( whole house ) , then disconnected the Black Hot wire, White Neutral, Bare Ground from the outlet plug itself. Then I attached the RED clip from the toner to the BARE copper end of the Black Hot wire. Then I attached the BLACK clip of the toner to the BARE ground wire coming to the outlet. I then turned the toner to the highest tone setting. Then I turned up the volume on the tracer end and I had one black wire that I had cut for some reason, and that wire I held the tracer against. That was my wire omitting the tone. FINALLY found my issue, so this toner / tracer does WORK. It was probably at least 30ft from the outlet to the breaker box. One Youtube video, the guy explained that you have to trace with the LIGHT, NOT THE TONE. Well thats B.S !! ... show more

Anyone purchasing such a tool will likely know the specs prior to ordering as this is something that you would purchase with a particular need in mind. That said, I compared many of the usual suspects when it comes to VDV, telecom, and the like. Some of those brands include Ideal, Cisco, and of course Tempo. I have always been partial to Klein’s hand tools, but the quality of their test equipment surprised me as of late and I’ve been going with more of it when a particular project does arise. I’m long retired, so it’s usually for something around the house, but I detest cheap tools as you definitely get what you pay for. Many years of professional use has fostered that slogan into a very lucid reality. So, Klein has beat out the competition for value hands down. And, I’m not surprised either. You get the features that you would need and then some, and at a price that is a third to half of what you would pay for a comparable unit produced by one of those other major manufacturers. Now, my ONLY issue and the sole reason that this is NOT a five star item, is because ALL of the batteries were faulty. They were all dated for 01-2027, but it’s currently 06-2024 and they don’t have enough juice to power either piece as each one called for 4 AAA batteries. So, I was forced to grab 8 of my trusty Amazon Basics AAA batteries and it was all working great as soon as I fired it up! I’d definitely recommend the product, but please don’t even bother with the included generic alkaline batteries! Even if they did put out enough power, I don’t think I could trust them. I removed a shed from our yard and somehow the electric wire got buried when the land was resurfaced. We had a switch for the shed wire so we simply turned it off. However, we later wanted to use the electric at our dock so we needed to find the end of the wire. The Tracer tone allowed me to find the wire and follow it from the entry point to the "dead end." It had been several years since the shed had been removed and I didn't know within 15' where the wire would be - nor at what depth. This tracer allowed me to locate the location and when I dug 18" down, I found the wire end.
