  • Don't Waste Your Time or Money
I wanted to like this movie so bad--I love all three of the leads but it is very poorly written, uber-violent and boring to boot. I really wish the script and the direction were different because these three actresses deserved better. The costume and set design are great, however, and really bring out that period 70's NY vibe. I don't normally write film reviews and I realize that art is subjective but I really felt this movie was terrible so there it is! ... show more

  • Loved It!
I find it is funny that the men gave it low ratings. lol Maybe it's gangster chick flick.

  • Good acting, bad movie
The acting by Elizabeth Moss and Melissa McCarthy was really good. I'd like to see Melissa McCarthy do more serious acting rolls and I've always liked Elizabeth Moss since I saw her in Mad Men. But with the good acting the movie was very bad in my opinion. The whole point of the movie was that these women were "empowered" by being violent criminals and praying on innocent businesses through extortion and violence. So they found their strength by victimizing other people? Maybe I take movies too serious but they tried imply that the mafia/organized crime was there to help out the businesses and that they were providing a service. My distaste for this movie has nothing to do with with women in leading roles, doesn't make a difference to me if it's a good story, but rather that they were glorifying violent criminals and trying to make them out to be the heroes of the movie. Besides the negative message of the movie the whole story wasn't believable and especially the very last scene in the movie. ... show more

  • Disappointing
I'm so disappointed. With Elizabeth Moss and Melissa McCarthy headlining this movie I thought I would love it. I didn't. The acting is what you expect from these actresses but the story itself doesn't hold water. It's not believable that these three wives would have taken over their husbands' protection racket when the husbands went to jail. The script doesn't portray them as gangsters to be feared. They're not menacing or evil, so asking us to believe that they are successful intimidating store owners falls flat. I'm very disappointed that the screenplay writers did not make smart use of these actresses' substantial talent. ... show more

  • An Awesome Movie With Superb Acting and Writing!
The Kitchen is an awesome movie and a great story. I loved it! Please watch it, you will not be disappointed. When I first saw the trailer, I wasn't sure if it was a comedy or not. However, I'm very happy I watched this movie. The scenery looks authentic 1970's . I loved the old cars. The plot kept me guessing. Everything about this movie was done well. The acting and writing were superb. Again this was an awesome movie! I'm going to probably watch it again. I don't understand why some reviewers gave it low ratings. ... show more

  • Such promise, such a flawed storyline
I wanted to like this movie so much, I really did. Hey, I'm a feminist. I love Elisabeth Moss in The Handmaid's Tale, so I was hoping this would be more of the same (albeit in a different time, place, reality, etc.). The Kitchen is watchable but ultimately suffers because it tries too hard to make the women be "the good guys". It's a hard pill to swallow to watch shopkeepers cheerfully handing over protection money when the ladies are suddenly running the show. The reason Goodfellas worked is because none of the protagonists were necessarily likable - they were real characters, with selfish motives, and they didn't try to hide it. That's the problem with the The Kitchen: being involved in the mafia isn't a good thing for anybody, and just because women are calling the shots doesn't change that fact. ... show more
