I ordered these knives because they look like a decent enough set of knives to use in the kitchen and indeed they are. I don't really like the title used for these knives has it simply states high carbon steel giving no description of the type of steel used. Yes they are stainless steel but there are many variations of stainless steel out there and the type used in knives is pretty important. Anyway, so I found unboxing these knives to be quite pleasant. Im a stickler for good packing lol. The knife set comes packed inside a nice box that really could be gifted. The packing isnt perfect but its adequate. The knives are packed in one box while the knives are all packed in another. They are individually covered in plastic with a nylon cap on the tip of the blade to protect it. The knife block itself isnt anything fancy, but it is wood which is a plus, and it is done nicely. Cant say I am very fond of the knife sharpener on the side of it, but its a nice touch for those who would use it. I would be careful when using it though, because its just a little plastic knife sharpener stuck to the side of the block with double sided tape. The knives as I said before are stainless steel but there is no reference to the type of stainless steel they are. These knives are ridiculously sharp out of the box, so be careful when unpacking them. The knife cutting edge bevel is sharpened at 18 degrees, which I am a fan of. To me its a good bevel for a kitchen knife. Not to steep as to make the cutting edge fragile but still aggressive enough to sharpen them to a good and sharp cutting edge. With that bevel these knives will do well cutting most food items in the kitchen, just don't go cutting into anything like bone, because this bevel is not made for the really hard stuff. I cant give any idea to how long these blades will stay sharp because I haven't used them for long enough yet to test that and I dont know the specific steel they are made of to give a rough Idea. I can say they have been used in my kitchen for a little over a week now and they are still sharp. The handles are good looking and fairly ergonomic, but your hands do slip on them when wet. All the knife blades were perfectly straight out of the box, which is something that's hit and miss with these off-brand knives. All in all, I think it's a pretty good set of knives to have for the home kitchen and someone that cooks a few times a week and want a good set of knives that compliment them nicely in the kitchen. These are descent knives for the home, but they are not profession quality knives. They just wouldn't hold up to that type of rigorous use every day, though the design of the knives where the blade and the handle are one piece would lend itself well in a commercial environment, but that's about it. The knife sharpener on the side of the block is a bit dinky and I would have preferred to see this set come with a honing steel, rather than the little sharpener but some may be able to benefit from it. There are machining marks all over these knives but that is to be expected with a whole set of knives at this price. Get them and take care of them and they will serve you well. Handwash them and dry them immediately, do not put them in the dishwasher even though it says dishwasher safe. Use them with a good quality wood cutting board, and dont try and cut through anything to hard. Do that and these knives will be a great addition to your cooking space. I do think this is a great value set of knives for the price, but I did remove a star because the listing fails to list the type of steel used and I feel like a honing steel would have been a far better addition to this set rather than the knife sharpener. This knife set arrived with the knives well-protected, with no scratches or scrapes on the blades. The block is very attractive and substantial. The scissors come apart for cleaning and they are substantial enough for chicken wings. I like the serrated blades on the steak knives because I would otherwise have to sharpen them frequently. The knives are sized well for most uses and the handles are more comfortable than I thought they might be. The knife edges needed to be steeled out of the box. If you don't know how to steel a blade, instructions are included with the set. After steeling, the knives cut well. I don't remove review stars for this kind of initial setup maintenance because it ought be be done with any knife set out of the box like this. The handles are hollow and the blades are thinner than some other quality brands I've worked with, so the knifes are quite light in the hand. This concerned me at first. But the balance of the chef's knife is right were the blade meets the handle, making the knife easy to use. There is more deflection when using the chef's knife than with some other knife sets, but it is very minor. The deflection in the carving and boning knives actually increases their useability. So the lightness of the handle is offset by the lightness of the blade for balance and speed in making cuts. I will continue to keep a couple knifes around for tougher chopping chores, but these will serve quite well for most prep in my kitchen. ... show more

What can I say other than I'm very impressed. When I unboxed this knife set, the first thing out of the box was the block which I have to say is a beautiful piece of wood. It's a deep brown, like walnut or dark oak. Then I opened the box with the knives. Each knifhe was wrapped in plastic, there were plastic guards attached to the tip of each blade to protect them, and then they were put into a cardboard sheaf. The handles of the knives are hollow and I originally thought a little light, but they're well balanced. They were sharp right out of the box, but a few quick passes over the blades with the honing steel made them even better. I sliced tomatoes thinly and cleanly and was able to slice scallions without crushing the more delicate green ends. The kitchen shears easily come apart for cleaning and one of the blades is also a bottle opening, which is a nice touch. This knife set including the block costs very little more than some single knives I've bought in the past so it's a very good buy. Right out of the gate. These look amazing, they are sharp, easy to clean, and easily my favorite cutting and looking set of knives I have ever owned. So why four stars??? The major and only flaw. The block is top heavy. Meaning if you pull it forward a tiny bit it could tip over. I removed two of the back feet and that helped it immensely. This oversight is too big to give five stars even though I love these things beyond what you can probably imagine. I cook every day and these have made cooking that much better that I would still say get these but make a note of how to avoid the top heaviness of the block. Also this was packaged really well. I have seen so some bad packing. This is a review for the silver handled model. The wood handles do NOT have the issue of the block being top heavy. ... show more
