    • Quieter (but scratchy and mushy) version of K1 Max Ultra-Slim Red
Color: Silent Red Switch
I should say that the Keychron K1 series of Ultra-Slim TKL keyboards are my favorite keyboards on the market. I like some aspects of the K1 Max more (keycaps mostly, overall weight too) and some aspects of the K1 V6 more (overall quieter keypress sound for all keys except the spacebar). I am pretty picky about keyboards. I own three similar Keychron K1 boards, which I have used directly side by side: (1) a K1 Max with Gateron Red switches; a K1 Max with Keychron Silent Red switches; and a similar (but different: non-Max) K1 version 6 with Gateron Red switches. The keys sound different on all three boards (K1 Max with Gateron Red vs. K1 v6 with Gateron Red vs K1 Max with Keychron Silent Red). This review is for the K1 Max with Keychron Silent Red, so I will focus on that: 1) Yes, K1 Max with Keychron Silent Red is noticeably quieter than the K1 Max with Gateron Red. 2) Yes, K1 Max with Keychron Silent Red is noticeably quieter than the K1 version 6 with Gateron Red. Personally, I find the K1 Max PBT keycaps hold up much better than the K1 version 6 ABS keycaps. While the K1 v6 ABS keycaps, in my experience lose their letters' shapes, perhaps due to regular cleaning with Zeiss lens wipes, I have had no such problem with the K1 max keycaps. It is as if the "paint" on the ABC keycpas on the K1 v6 "wears off", perhaps especially if cleaned lightly but regularly with Zeiss lens wipes, for example. The PBT keycaps on the K1 Max boards seem to have their letter shapes retain their correct shapes (not "wearing away the paint" like the ABS keycaps do for me). Yes, the K1 Max PBT keycaps are not shine-through, wheras the K1 v6 ABS keycaps are shine-through. But I prefer the keycaps to not have the letter legibility suffer. The PBT seems markedly more more durable and legible to me. Comparing the three in terms of key sound): 1) The K1 Max Gateron Red (PBT) is the "clackiest of these three for most keys" overall (though not very clacky overall, just comparatively). 2) The K1 v6 Gateron Red (ABS) is noticeably more "damped for most keys" SOUNDING than the K1 Max. The K1 v6 Gateron Red (ABS) is more of a dull "thud", with only slight "clackiness", compared with the K1 Max Gateron Red (PBT). Actually pretty quiet. 3) Finally, the subject of this review: the K1 Max with Keychron Silent Red switches (PBT): easily the quietest of all three. Minimal clackiness overall (little to none). As a clarification on the list immediately above: the SPACEBAR relative clackiness is reversed between the "K1 Max Gateron Red (PBT)" and the "K1 v6 Gateron Red (ABS) ". So, while the former has overall more clackines (most keys), its SPACEBAR is less clacky, compared with the latter. So, there is not a blanket rule on this relative ranking, depending on one's usage. On my unit, the quietness of the K1 Max with Keychron Silent Red switches (PBT) comes at significant costs, as follows: 1) There is (unfortunately) a noticeable "scratchiness/grinding" when pressing the keys. Some more than others. This is most prominent and most irritating for keys that I may press slightly off-axis, such as often when I press the "up arrow" key by jamming my finger forward a bit and down. If I press with a light forward-back angle, the key should just go straight down still, and I guess it mostly does, but it sort of scrapes its way there. Very unnerving to my fingers, and I only ever noticed this physically sensible, grating feedback in the scraping and mushiness of a quiet Leopold TLK FC750R with Cherry MX Silent Red (though that one is not ultra-slim like these Keychron K1 Ultra Slims). It may be worth pointing out, my standalone switch tester has a "Cherry MX Silent Red" that also closely matches this scraping/grating/mushy experience on the "Keychron Silent Red" switches. 2) There is also noticeably more resistance when typing on all of the Keychron Silent Red switches in general (compared with the Gateron Reds). The quietness comes at the cost of scraping and resistance which almost feels like mushiness. So, in my experience, the K1 Max ultra-slim Keychron Silent Red is sadly a scrapey, mushy, board. But quiet. I do like having it available. The board's physical dimensions are absolutely perfect, like the other K1 ultra-slim boards that I own. The K1 Max units are a little heavier than the K1 version 6, which is truly not necessary but is kind of nice. For day to day use, I mostly prefer K1 v6 Gateron Red. Sometimes I switch that up for the K1 Max Gateron Red, which I like, too. It's a minor point, but I do believe the PBT keys feel somewhat better to the fingerpads in texture/feel than the ABS, but the relatively quiter thump of the K1 v6 overall wins most of the time for me. Both of those offer rather low resistance, with a nice, smooth, tactile feel and satisfyingly light (mostly non-intrusive) clackiness. But, on any occasions for which I wish a quieter board for some reason, e.g. for a teleconference where I know I will be typing and maybe without good sound cleanup in the audio chain, to eliminate keypresses: then it is indeed quite nice to have the K1 Max with Keychron Silent Red switches available. Even with its faults. I do hope Keychron can make a K1 Max "Silent Red" without the scratciness nor mushiness in the future. That, I would really love. I don't think it exists yet, unless I got a lemon. I think I will ask their support. I encourage Keychron to keep improving on this line. I'm glad it is available in my rotation. I wish it did not have the defects, but this is the closest available off-the-shelf board for this "need", as far as I am aware at this time. ... show more

Amazing. Never thought I could "love" a keyboard. Took a gamble on Keychron after an expensive logi mx keys keyboard failure after 4 months - and a liar of a logi warranty. Couldn't be happier now - with a much better product and a much better company! Look, feel, and quality is miles ahead of the logi brand.
