  • Exceeded my expectations
I've been hearing the praises of a Keurig from my sister for what it seem like ages. They have one at her work area and she swears by it. So after having gone through numerous coffee makers I decided to get one to see what all the fuss was about. I started researching to see which one would be good enough for the house of 4 very mobile coffee and tea drinkers. While not all coffee makers are perfect and some may exhibit pump, drain issues and even some don't even turn on (mostly after the warranty expires), there are some makers that do last longer than others. Within the Keurig brand, it seems that the Office Pro B 145 falls into the category of least maintenance and problem free overall compared to the other models. Since it's really is a commercial grade unit it is able to more abuse. So I bought it on Amazon and it arrived quickly. It was packaged well with no noticeable bumps on the box and unpacking it was easy. The original page stated I would get only 4 k-cups but what arrived was a box of 12 instead which was a nice surprise. The unit itself is nice looking and the cup area is adjustable (it slides out to accommodate bigger cups and travel mugs). The stainless steel/black look matches stuff in the kitchen and isn't any bigger than the previous Cuisinart DCC-2600 Brew Central 14-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Glass Carafe maker it replaces. Instructions state to prime the unit and that took about 5 minutes. I repeated the process twice just in case. This process introduced me to the semi-loud noise of water being pumped into the machine and getting heated. It's a bit louder than a regular coffee maker would make and it was over quickly. Bottom line its not that annoying, just took me by surprised for the first time. The water holding reservoir holds 48 ounces of water and it nice that I can detach it from the unit to fill up and place back without actually dropping water. The unit also has a draining feature to drain any water out of the unit for transport, but I do not see myself transporting this unit around anywhere. Although the water level is easily viewable, I like that there is an additional led indicator light that will turn on if the water level is too low to tell me it needs refilling. It also has a descaling indicator light that will turn on if calcium deposits build up with certain water supplies. After the the unit was primed, the process of making a cup of coffee starts. I select the cup size, open the lid, insert a k-cup, push the brew button and viola, a few seconds later the cup starts filling up. Now this is where it may or may not break the deal for some thinking about getting a Keurig. There are three settings on this device, 6, 8 or 10 oz. Personally I feel the k-cups are meant for only 6 oz of coffee. It brings out the full flavor of the coffee and if one chooses the 8 or 10 oz setting, that same k-cup will be diluted. But that size won't cut it for those that are mobile like myself. The only solution to this would be to do two k-cups of the same flavor or get the Ekobrew Cup, Refillable Cup for Keurig K-Cup Brewers, Brown/Green, 2-Count (like I did) and fill it up with your favorite coffee to fill up your favorite king size cup at the higher oz setting. With individual selection and quick turnaround between servings, I find it faster filling up for 4 people on the go than doing a regular pot of coffee, waiting for it to finish and possibly forgetting to turn it off or worse wasting leftover coffee. With so many varieties of k-cup pods available its easy going overboard buying many of them to try out which one you may end up buying regularly. This also brings the issue of where to put them all. I eventually bought two Nifty Stainless Steel Coffee Pod Drawer, Holds 36 K-Cup Packs and they fit perfectly stacked underneath the Keurig and still clear the cabinets overhead. Even though I consider myself a heavy coffee drinker I also have quite a few boxes of teas and its nice to know that I can simply have the Keurig brew a cup of hot water into a cup and insert the teas bags into the cup thus not wasting all those boxes of teas. I also notice this works quite well for a cup of soups too. Pros: -Quick and easy way to get a small cup of coffee without having to wait for a pot to brew. -Ability to choose your own type of coffee (flavored, bold, specialty) and even teas, etc. -No leftover coffee burning on a pot -Auto-shutoff, draining, descale and water refill indicator features -Uses K-cup style coffee pods that are more easily available and in different varieties. Cons: -A bit nosier than a regular coffee drip maker -Inability to brew a large cup of coffee (If you are a 10-12+ oz coffee drinker, you will need to do 2 or more k-cups to fill the cup, the k-Cups are really designed for 6 oz cups of coffee, thus if you select the 8 oz or 10 oz setting, the coffee will not be as strong. A solution to this is to get a bolder style of k-cup coffee pod or use your own. see next comment) -Pricey in comparison with a regular coffee maker's pot of coffee, but cheaper than going out to the neighborhood coffee shop. (Both of these cons can also be overcome by getting a Ekobrew refillable k-cup and add your own coffee) -You may have less sleep since you may end up drinking more coffee :) and -you may run out of space to where to put all these k-cups. Bottom line, I really like this unit and will do it all over again, in fact I just may get another one for myself at work. ... show more

  • I Really Like This Model
The day after I received this, the price came down. Oh well. When opening this first saw that instead of a 4-pack sampler it had a 12-pack comprising 10 different coffees including 1 decaf and 1 tea. Not sure if the allocation of samples varies or not. I received Green Mountain Nantucket Blend x2, Green Mountain Breakfast Blend, Gloria Jeans Hazelnut, Timothy's Columbian Decaf, Van Houtte French Vanilla, Newman's Special Blend, Caribou Caribou Blend, Barista Prima Italian Roast, Celestial Seasons Sleepytime Tea, Emerils' Big Easy Bold and Tully's French Roast. Based upon reviews from a great many sources I also went with an office machine as that might or should last significantly longer. Key features of this model include the ability to drain the internal water tank, scale buildup warning LED, out of water LED, selectable 6-8-10 ounce (via knob, not screen), auto shutoff after 2 hours (disabled by default) and a 5-foot power cord (well, probably 5.5). Unlike the some of the home models no LED screens, just lights, buttons and a knob. Dimensions from manufacturer seem accurate (13.3"H x 9.5"W x 12.3"D) and machine does have a small volume removable drip tray which also gives more room if brewing into a travel mug. Maximum mug height is about 5.75 inches with drip tray installed and about 7 inches with the drip tray removed. Warm up times from power off will vary with ambient temperature as well as how long it has been since last used but 4 minutes seems to be a reasonable estimation. About 45 to 60 seconds for the machine to recover after brewing a cup and this may vary with brew size as 10 ounces will require more cool replacement water to refill the internal tank than a 6 oz. draw. The water tank is on the left which is strange considering that only about 10% of the population is left-handed. I would suggest, however, not removing the tank for routine filling. I simply transfer water via a large cup or container as this has two advantages: 1) reduces wear on plastic parts, clips and connectors, and, 2) less to spill and handle. I use filtered water (filter attached to tap). As to noise - it really isn't very much at all. Some pump noise from vibration when refilling after a draw or when priming and then some normal squealing, etc., as water is heated and hot water is dispensed and flows through the cup. Another suggestion for initial setup or after extended storage is to draw several cups of water through the machine (and reusable k cup filter if you get one) just to flush the system. Just for the heck of it I measured the amount of water drawn through the various settings and these were pretty accurate although probably rounded especially after seeing product descriptions for various models and manufacturers (e.g., 9.7 ounces). Ekobrew reusable k cup fits and works (experimentally determined just to make sure) and Keurig strongly points out that their reusable k cup is not compatible with this machine (basically most office machines). The regular pre-filled k cups are really nice, convenient and leave nearly zero cleanup but are very expensive when compared to buying a pound of coffee and grinding your own. If you haven't owned or used a single cup brewer before you will be very happy but you also need to buy some of the various variety packs to find what coffees, teas, hot chocolates, etc., you like before getting a larger number of some that you may not like. Having a couple of each variety in each variety pack will also allow you to test taste at various brew sizes (e.g., try the same coffee at 10, 8 and 6 ounce brew sizes). Green Mountain The Entertainer (48 pack) seemed to have a good lineup with 6 k cups of each beverage and variety. Keurig currently has a promotion where if you register your brewer you will be sent a code to buy 2 boxes of k cups and get 2 free and you can use this for up to three brewers. Package size must be 22, 24, 25 count. They said to expect up to a week for the email with the code but I received this within 7 minutes after registering online. This will reduce the cost of an initial purchase or stock down by about half taking into account any local sales, taxes and shipping. For the record, so far I am extremely pleased with this model and highly recommend. It is my first single serve brewer and also the first time that I have even used one. I like the idea of being able to grab just a single cup or mug but manually turn the machine off after brewing since 4 minutes for a fresh cup is not unreasonable and might as well save the electricity. Two warnings with this machine - it is currently winter and Keurig strongly suggests allowing the machine to warm to room temperature before setting it up. It may also be that some grounds may get into the needles and the use guides, online FAQ, etc., have instructions and suggestions to clear those using a paper clip (you can also use a sewing needle). Might be a good idea to periodically do this as you won't know that it is blocked except by having no flow or an overflow thereby wasting a k cup and/or making a mess.
