I gave this 5 Stars because it is an amazing product. If I could change one thing it would be the rate at which the water drains out, it's a bit of a slow process. I suggest finding a hollowed out tree and setting it up and leaving it be, another route I've gone is suspending it over a Nalgene between two trees. I'll be ordering the larger version for car camping, but this is the perfect size for backpacking if you set up camp near a water source. ... show more

    • Keeps the taste of the water source
I use this for backpacking and hunting. It does a really good job of filtering the water. If you do not find a stream and have to use a lake, look for a shallow part with a lot of rocks. With other filtration devices, they leave a weird taste. This does not. I also like its 3-liter capacity. I was able to fill my camelback, then refill this, and bring it back to camp to top myself off in the morning. Water is heavy. This allows you (if you are certain of the availability of water sources) to travel a little lighter. Also, make sure you clean it out when you get back to society. It works well but will be degraded if you do not maintain it and allow bacteria to grow in it when its not in use. ... show more

    • Good filter but not versatile
If you only consider the filter itself I think it's hard to beat the befree. The filter had crazy fast flow and it weights a little less than the sawyer squeeze. However, it loses to the squeeze in versatility. The filter pretty much only works with the bladder it comes with, compared to the sawyer squeeze which fits on all kinds of different bottles and bladders. The bladder the befree comes with is really high quality and I've never had a problem with it, but if the bladder fails you are completely out of luck. With the sawyer squeeze if all your containers fail you can still use the filter to drink directly from a water source. So for me the Befree is just not versatile enough. ... show more

    • Lightweight and super fast filter!
I was using a Sawyer mini gravity system when one day one of the knobs on the end snapped off when I was removing a tube. That's when I found the Katadyn system and I am so glad I did!! It filters 4x as fast, is lighter than the system I was using before (4 oz is amazing for a complete system) and it packs down small. I've used it twice now and am so happy with my purchase. My only concern is how long it will last. The bag is pretty durable and the plastic part of the filter is pretty built well. However I feel like the filter itself is a little fragile (you're not supposed to touch the white filter pieces or hold it when it's in the bag. It makes me nervous to pack it in with all my gear so I keep it on the outside pocket on it's own. I guess we'll see how long it goes for. Other than that one caveat, it's great! ... show more

I have LOVED using this Katadyn filter while on backpacking, bike touring, and overnight kayaking trips. It is so light and easy to use. The handle around the neck makes it easy to collect water and its quick filtering design makes filling many bottles a breeze. I even used it in a rather silty/dirty river while kayaking and the water tasted fine - though had a bit of a smell, which is inevitable. Better news is that I didn't get sick!     • Cleans large amounts fast
Love this for backpacking. I live in Oregon so there are plenty of lakes around. This is perfect to bring on a backpacking trip to get water on the go without having to lug gallons of it up the mountain. It is super simple, doesn't require pumping etc, and most importantly is easy to use with just one person. I get a little nervous about it getting damaged in my pack but it has been durable so far over 10+ nights of backpacking. ... show more

Does the job it's supposed to do, I enjoy the two options of drinking or filling up a jug. I used this product twice. Second time was high in the mountains wanting to taste some snow packed lake water. Unfortunately the hinge on the cap snapped and it wouldn't stay on. The company sent me a couple replacements, if anything fails the manufacturer at least has your back. ... show more

Love this filter. I have 2 of the 3 liter bags with filters for use at base camp and hiking. The large mouth and carry handle make this a breeze to fill and carry. Also easy to hang up around camp and seems to be pretty durable. Great to refill smaller bottles and group cooking. Flow rate is better than the Sawyer squeeze or mini. Don't get me wrong. I love my Sawyer squeeze and my mini but for filtering larger amounts of water it is way easier with the Katadyn BeFree. ... show more
