this is my second kastking reel. the first one i purchased is on a summer rod. this one works good but started making noise the first time out on the ice it very well could be nothing. i never looked into it or oiled it so dont let that steer you away from this reel. katking are some of the smoothest reels ive used ... show more

I took a chance on this based on the positive reviews. I combined this with a 6-14lb Ugly Stik rod, and really enjoyed fishing for hours multiple times. I only had 8lb test mono, and it worked really well with 1/2oz - 3/4oz lures/plastics. I would definitely prefer 6lb to be able to cast lighter gear further, but was no problem at all with the 3/4oz. Everytime I cast my nuggets shrink and rise into my body like I'm going down a huge roller-coaster. It has the weight of a Trojan battle axe but the sweet gentle whisper of a caterpillar. Bought this as a back up reel for my ice rods. Found out real quick that the Drag is NOT as smooth as you'd think it ought to be. Kinda sticky in my opinion. Great Reel for a starter but save a little more money and grab the higher tier Kastking reels.
