I haven't spent many hours on the water with this reel yet, but so far I'm very impressed. This is the first true ultralight reel I've owned but I can already tell it'll be my new go-to reel for small water and finesse fishing. It's the lightest reel I own by far, but it's also impressively solid and resistant to flexing. Casting and retrieval are both extremely smooth. The casting is probably the feature that's impressed me most so far: it launches 1/16 oz and 1/32 oz lures effortlessly, even when paired with a rod that's probably too stiff for it. The retrieval rate is tuned well for ultralight fishing, and the line lay on the spool is excellent. I hope to update this review after more extensive use, but from what I've seen so far I'd highly recommend it to anyone who's looking for an ultralight reel in this price range.

The first thing you notice is how light the reel is. It is constructed very well. I added 8lb braid and it spooled flawlessly. The reel casts very well and is smooth as butter on the retreive!! Great product from Kast King!!

As a mainly hobbyist fisherman, this is a solid lightweight reel. Drag is smooth, construction quality feels sturdy in hand and while using. I really like the blue color. Perfect for my needs.

I picked up the KastKing Kestrel SE and paired it with a KastKing Perigee II 5'6" ultra light rod and all I can say is wow! It's my new favorite crappie rig. Besides being beautiful to look at it feels good in your hands and reels so smooth you forget it's a spinning reel. The drag is ultra smooth as I quickly found out when large walleye decided to test my 3lb test line. I don't usually fish the river in the middle of winter, but the ice is iffy and the local river dam has some open water so I was all set. I caught crappie some white bass and few different size walleyes, it handled them all. I can normally find something I don't like in a combination especially a spinning combo but I have no complaints with setup except I need to buy a another one lol

Recently retired, I now have oodles of time for hobbies ignored for a decade while family, work, and life obligations got in the way of time on the water. As the weather clears and warms up enough to get fish back on the bite I'll be out in the local streams wet wading with my ultra lite gear for some quality relaxation. One of my fishing holes is included in my pictures as it's typical of the water I enjoy fishing in the most. Enter this KastKing Ultralight Spinning reel. Why not treat myself to this beautiful sparkle blue reel? It's almost a shame to mate it to the ultralight rod I had on hand in the basement rafters with all the original tags still on it waiting for me to find a reel for it. Rod meet your new reel. Spooled this up with a factory fresh portion of KastKing Destron 4 pound test line and I'm all ready to go. If I can stand it, I'll wait to give it a try out on the water. If I can't wait, I'll risk the humiliation of lawn fishing while my neighbors wonder if I've lost my marbles. Two things to call out. The first being this reel does not have a reverse switch. This wasn't particularly important to me, but I did notice this wasn't on the reel pretty quickly. The second thing I'll call out is beware the reel handle is reverse threaded when you go about installing the reel handle on the reel body. This is also fine, but it would have been nice if this was called out in the instructions. Everything operates smoothly right now. I imagine this will only improve with a little break in time. I do appreciate the detailed care and maintenance instructions as well as the exploded parts diagram. You never know what you might get into out on the water and having that diagram will come in handy if a disassembly level cleaning and relubrication is necessary. Fully loaded reel and 5 foot rod combo final weight came in at 8.7 ounces. That's what I call ultra lite and should be able to handle anything I may encounter on on the streams and pools I fish.
