  • Great for beginners.
I have been sketching since I can remember and I don’t normally use the fancy tools and such for it but this is a great kit to help me experiment more and learn new things about sketching that I haven’t tried, the sketch books come a bit small but it’s honestly no problem for me they’re amazing.

  • Mostly decent starter set with a few quality issues
TL;DR: This is a pretty good all-around starter set for new artists, students, hobbyists, or those who don't already have a lot of art supplies. It's definitely not top-tier quality, and has a few issues that make parts of it less than useful, but as an affordable entry-level kit it provides a little bit of everything. Now, on to the more detailed review! See photos for illustration of the bullet points below. THE GOOD: - The compact packaging. Apart from the two spiral-bound pads, the entire set is conveniently packaged in a metal tin with three molded plastic trays that hold everything neatly in place. As long as you put everything back in its slot, the whole kit can be closed up and dropped in a bag or carried around without fear of losing a pencil. - It's comprehensive. This set contains pretty much everything a budding graphite/charcoal artist needs, including a wide range of graphite textures (4H to 14B), multiple erasers, sharpeners, toned pastel pencils, and more. - Everything is clearly labeled. From the stamped pencils to the helpful inventory on the inside of the box lid, it's easy to see what each item is at a glance. Pencils are labeled at the end opposite the point, so the hardness label will not be sharpened away with use (which is pretty standard, but I've seen a few that messed this up!). - The drawing pads have a solid backing board to provide support and a large spiral. (The paper, however... well, more on that below.) THE NOT-SO-GOOD - Quality control seems lacking. I don't know if the set I received had been repeatedly dropped, or what, but some of the pencils that didn't come pre-sharpened had leads that were absolutely pulverized inside the wood casing. The white charcoal pencils were the worst; as soon as I attempted to sharpen one, the lead just started falling out in powder. I had to sharpen HALF THE LENGTH OF THE PENCIL before I got to a section where there was enough solid lead to form a tip -- and even that bit is loose, so I know it's going to disintegrate as soon as I start using it. Obviously this makes them difficult/impossible to use, and I'm also suspicious of what will happen when I start wearing down the pre-sharpened tips and need to sharpen them again... - The actual paper in the drawing pads is... meh. I'm not convinced it's actually 68 lb. paper (feels more like 50 lb. to me; also thickness and texture vary between color), and the toned pages have large inclusions of dark fibers and what look like wood/plant fragments (which shouldn't be there at all, as this is supposedly acid-free). The sketch pad in my set also had a large dent pressed all the way through the inside pages, but not the covers; it had to be a manufacturing error. - The glove is huge and awkwardly shaped. I wear a women's large in gloves, so my hands aren't abnormally tiny, but there was still more than an inch of excess fabric between my hand and the side seam. The fingers are also sewn with a wide gap between them, so there's no way not to have the fabric bunching up between the ring finger and pinky. I haven't had this problem with other "one-size" artist gloves; this just seems like a bad design. I guess I can use it as a backup glove for my digital tablet, but I'm not sure I'd want to drag something with this many wrinkles across a delicate charcoal drawing. THE SUMMARY: Despite what it says on the box, I wouldn't really class this as a pro-level kit. But then, most professionals tend to already know which specific tools they need/like and will pick out individual items from their preferred brands, so this set isn't for them (for so many reasons -- IMO, any "professional" art product that uses a photo run through a free sketch filter on the front of their box instead of an actual drawing is immediately suspect!). But since it contains a variety of tools, it would make a nice gift set for a student or someone just getting into fine art. The price ($29.99 as of this writing) is reasonable for what is provided, even with the issues mentioned above. ... show more
