I got these to try out some drawing and sketching with, so I'm new to the hobby, but they seem to be of good quality and I can tell the difference between the different hard/softness of the pencils. The sketchbooks (I did receive 2, even though I only pictured 1) are a nice half-page size that's easy to carry around with the case. I wish the tin case had enough room to fit one sketchbook inside with the pencils to make it even easier to keep the set together for outings. The pencils are pre-sharpened but they are sharpened too much, instead of a flat surface from the point to the unsharpened part, the tip concaves away from the paper so only the point can touch the page and so light broad shading is impossible until the pencils need sharpening. This frustrated me enough I gave up drawing my dragon (following a youtube video) and did some shading practice on another page to see why it was so hard to do. The pages don't seem to rip out of the sketchbook cleanly. It is sealed together well. This would be great for those that want to keep the book together, but not so much if you want to take a page out. Also, the pages are the same weight as copy paper and are textured. This means that you can't use anything besides pencils or crayons on them without the marks going through to the next page and that the pencil lines will never look completely smooth. I think this set will be fun to use and grow with, once the frustrating pencils have been sharpened to a flat shading edge. ... show more

I like a set with a good storage tray, and this comes with a good metal tin that lets you see and select the right pencil from all the choices. the two stacking trays inside have finger pulls so you can lift them out easily. I reversed them to put the pencils on to for day to day access. Graphite, charcoal and white charcoal pencils, stick and willow charcoal, graphite, black gray and white... so many media in this one kit. I was blown away by the comprehensive accessories, some I had not seen before. The pencil holder/extender lets you use the pencil right down to the last inch - I simply hadn't seen that before in 40 years as an artist. Both vinyl and kneaded erasers, metal and plastic sharpeners, a sanding paper pad for shaping, and a utility knife for trimming wood or blender pencils. A few simple criteria I have in professional supplies, a good quality wood that doesn't splinter or bind in the sharpener, well centered graphite, smooth lacquer finish that feels comfortable in your hand, this set meets all my expectations for a quality set of pencils and tools. Two 50-sheet sketch pads are included, 68 lb paper, with a really nice tooth, like a smooth watercolor paper - really nice compliment to the pencils set.
