  • Works
Style: 10.1 Ounce, New Look
I returned from a recent trip to Southern California with super brassy hair due to the heavy minerals in their water—it wreaks havoc on curly hair (ugh). This shampoo noticeably neutralized the orange on the first use. It’s also very gentle. I’m quite impressed by the quality and results. Will look for Joico products more often. ... show more

  • The lid should be taped
Style: 10.1 Ounce, New Look
This is a great product but should have been shipped with a taped lid. At least it was in a bag or would have ruined the other product in the box.

  • More moisturizing than purple by same brand
Style: 10.1 Ounce, Old Look
I ordered Joico's blue shampoo to give it a try and compare it with their purple version. I was sent the conditioner in error but then sent the shampoo free without the need to return the conditioner. So this review is my experience using both the Joico Color Balance Blue Shampoo and Conditioner. First, my hair. I've been letting my natural hair grow out for the past 10 months after almost 30 years of coloring it to hide silvers. When I began this process I had my stylist put in high and low lights and use toner to mask my grow out. I wish I'd not done that though, as the processing - particularly the lightening of my naturally dark brown hair - really fried it! I tried for several months to deep condition, but eventually had my hair cut shorter and after three sessions of toner stopped any processing of my hair. Much to my surprise and delight, my new hair growth is soft, shiny and curlier than I ever expected. Unfortunately, though, the remaining colored & lightened hair tends to get brassy, thus my use of purple and with this product, blue shampoos, and conditioners to add an ashy tone to eliminate the red-orange ones. As for Joico Color Balance Blue, I tried it because I was hoping it would be even better than their purple, which works OK for me. I also use Joico's Color Butter in Titanium to add more ash tones when I'm feeling like I want something a little darker than my blondish-brown ends. Joico Blue is very blue and that is good! The deep tones neutralize blorange and did work on my hair to take out the brass. Surprisingly to me, it did not work better than the purple version, or rather it worked different.y. The blue was less drying to my hair - both the shampoo and the conditioner, which I really liked. As for its ability to neutralize orange brassiness - it was OK but seemed less effective than the purple. Maybe it's the phase of my hair's grow out or the lightening that's been done on my naturally brown-silver hair that was colored dark brown before that, but the resulting color after using the Joico Color Balance Blue was a flat, dull, non-descript blonde brown. So I liked that the Joico Color Balance Blue Shampoo and conditioner worked well together to moisturize my hair and that it did neutralize brassiness. What I wish was better was that it left behind a dull, flat tone that looked somewhat unnatural - even more than my colored hair! The purple was better in terms of its coloring (toning) effects on my hair, but it was more drying. I'm not sure why this is and I'd have to say that the only way to know which one is for you is to give them a try. I will continue to use this product as it did not harm my hair, didn't smell bad and while not exactly as I'd hoped, it's pretty good. ... show more

  • Very blue product!
Style: 10.1 Ounce, Old Look
Haven't used yet but it looks like a strong product. Very pleased with the packaging/shipping dept putting this item in a sealed bag prior to packing it, as the product somehow leaked - hence my calling it 'strong'... No harm no foul. Wiped off the sink nicely but my hands looked like i had them in a blue water toilet bowl. Used baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to scrub the stain off my hands, but you will want to wear gloves when using this. Will update after I give it a try on my hair. *Update: no need for gloves. If your hands are blue after using, it rinses off easily. The issue I had earlier was due to a spill and my hands were dry and I didn't get to rinse them off for several minutes so the blue didn't come off my hands easily at that time. As far as how it works on my hair... it gives the yellow-blonde highlights a slightly toned down look, ashed it out just a little. I have red-gold natural tones so a blue shampoo isn't enough by itself. I have to use a toner and developer and then I use the blue shampoo. Works better as a maintenance product, keeping hair from brassing out so quickly. ... show more

  • Only blue shampoo I trust!
Style: 10.1 Ounce, New Look
I have been using this shampoo for a couple of years now and I won't try anything else. I love the smell - it reminds me of a shampoo or soap I had as a child but can't place the exact scent. It's very faint and you can't really smell it unless you hold it to your nose. I have brown hair with blond balayage and I use the shampoo every two or three nights and as long as I'm consistent with it, it works wonders. I usually lather my hair and leave for five minutes then apply another coat to sit in my hair, then wait a few more minutes and rinse it really well. This shampoo is not overly moisturizering but after conditioning it feels fine. Your hands might have a blue tint to them after using but it rinses off instantly, just be sure to wipe any splatters or blue water off the tub or shower. I haven't left it sitting so I don't know, but I feel letting the residue sit will definitely stain. I highly recommend this and if you're on the fence, I say go for it. You can spend $10 on a cheap drug store brand and risk it not doing its job or you can put $15 with it to get a huge bottle that does a great what it is supposed to do. ... show more

  • Removes Orange Tones Well
Style: 10.1 Ounce, Old Look
So here's the scoop and I'm going to tell you: do not leave this on for longer than a few minutes and absolutely do follow with either a good conditioner, or a hair mask, or a leave-in, or an oil, or some other moisturizing product. This dried my otherwise healthy (albeit lightly bleached) hair out pretty well. I rinsed, followed with my regular conditioner, left a hair mask on for a while, and applied my regular hair oil on my damp hair and it still feels a little on the dry side. I didn't use the Joico conditioner so maybe that's doing some heavy lifting and I missed out. That said, it did cancel out a lot of the orange tone in my hair and did not turn my grey hair or skin blue. I would recommend toning incrementally using this once or twice a week if you're not satisfied with the first pass rather than letting it sit. ... show more
