    • Love this thing! A few issues so far though.
Delivery was awesome fast and easy, uncrating it was a bit annoying but not to bad. However when I finally got it plugged in it wouldn't start, we had to disassemble the start switch and attach some wire that apparently came loose or were never attached right in the first place. I've run quite a bit of lumber though it now and its been great gives amazingly smooth surfaces. Even after I stupidly ran un removed dried glue though it and slightly chipped one cutter, I haven't bothered rotating it yet and like I said it's giving me beautiful smooth wood. I did recently have another issue the Infeed on the Jointer randomly got stuck in the down position. And I couldn't figure out what was wrong until I made a trip to Woodcraft and looked at the identical unit they had there. I thought I was gonna have to take apart the top cover bit to tighten somethings in the right position to get it back to 0. but Somehow I still don't really understand when I was getting ready to do that and I was showing my buddy that came over to help what the issue was, and it totally fixed itself. I did really crank down on those things that needed tightened though and I think it will be fine going forward. Ultimately I love this thing, it may be my favorite tool in my shop I've been able to take junk 2x4s and turn them into beautiful lumber full of nail holes. Honestly Over all I'd say 9/10 just cause of the silly issues I had the tool it's self is absolutely amazing. If anyone knows if there's a digital thing for the planer part please let me know. I just realized I should probably mention that the switch over function isn't really a big deal I mean I do think If i had 2 machines it might be easier but the space saving in my 2 car garage is well worth it. Biggest down side is if I forget to joint something and I start thickening stuff I like to run everything back though the planer again to get it all to the same thickness I think a digital thickness readout would help to solve that. To the person who is not an Electrician and has a jet jointer planner setting in his garage because you do not know. The motor on your jet jointer/ planer ( name plate ) pulls 15 amps ( after the planer gets up to speed. The amperage is much higher on startup or when you put wood in it. Jet is correct … you size the circuit for starting current 30 Amps to the receptacle. The cord is sized to the running current 15 Amps. This allows you to start the machine and load the machine up with wood. Your machine can load up to 30 amp ( spike / short duration) w/ tripping your 30 amp breaker. By National Electrical Code manufacturers must put an overload breaker in the machine that will trip long before your panel breaker see the amperage. Your problem is no one you talked to could explain this. I have been a Master Electrician for over 45 years ! Being over size in your supply circuit will never hurt you machine. Being under size will. Do what the manufacturer said… supply the circuit with 30 Amps… plug the 15 amp plug in and enjoy you machine. I do not represent Jet. My JET JPJ-12BHH, 12-Inch Planer/Jointer arrived a week or so ago and I have had 2 electricians look at it to give me estimates to get it powered up in my garage. The machine came wired with 14 gauge wire and plug power cord. The label on the outside of the machine shows it’s 230 volt, 15 amp as does the label on the motor. However, the owners manual recommends to use a plug of at least 30 amps, and a 230 volt, 30 amp breaker. A 30 amp breaker requires 10 gauge wire (not the supplied 14 gauge wire. The plug will need to be swapped out too, because a 15 amp plug and a 30 amp plug are different. Jett’s tech support told me that the (14) gauge power cord is fine as is (?). My electrician just gave me a funny look so I guess he did not really agree. Will swapping out the power cord from 14 gauge to 10 gauge void the warranty? Call number 2 (actually email because I want this in writing) to come. At this point I have not even began to get this $5600.00 machine set up, but so far the contradicting specs in the owners manual vs labels on the housings have me thinking oh my, have I made an expensive mistake! More to come so others can see if this planer jointer is a must have or a bust. Part II: Sent another email to Jett Tools asking about the conflicting electrical information, (labels on the machine vs the owners manual). I asked “which information should be followed, the labels on the machine or the owners manual?” Jett’s Tech Support guy replied with one word, “Correct.” I assume the owners manual was the correct path??? Then I asked about the supplied power cord. I asked if I could “replace the power cord with a longer cord if I swapped out the 14 gauge cord with a 10 gauge cord; and would it void the warranty if I did so.” Tech support’s reply, “The power cord to the machine will not need to be changed out. The machine will be covered under under warranty.” Huh? Note, I copied and pasted tech support’s replies, right into this review, bad grammar and all. Both electricians were provided the updated information by forwarding the entire email conversation, a few days ago. Electrician #1 lives very close by, so he stopped over yesterday and he handed me an envelope with an estimate enclosed. At first he seemed OK as we looked at the jointer/planer, however, as we talked his tone changed slightly and sounded just a little upset. He showed me my email to him on his phone and said, “tech support’s short reply was not nice on their part.” Then shrugged his shoulders and said, I will wire it up any way you want me too, just tell which way you want it. Saying this as he walked back to his work van. (Thinking to myself, wiring advice is what I am hiring you to help provide). The price he gave me is $1245.00 to wire it either way (230 volt 15 amp or 230 volt 30 amp). He will need to run wire across my house, add the appropriate outlets in my garage, add a new plug to the power cord and add a new breaker in the panel. The second electrician has not responded back. Will he??? I have had the jointer/planer for 3 + weeks and it’s still sitting in its shipping crate draped in plastic. At this point I’m about ready to nail the sides and top back on it and ship this thing back. As you might have guessed, I will probably never buy another Jett product. ... show more
