  • Great Drill Press for Woodworking
Style: Drill Press
This drill press replaced a cheap, farm-store brand drill press that I have used for several years and was not quite up to the task of drilling accurate and straight holes in pen blanks. The old drill press is being donated to the local maker space. The Jet press was easy to assemble with the help of my wife. It probably took about 20 minutes to assemble. Before installing the chuck and taper, clean all mating surfaces thoroughly with acetone or alcohol. This step is important to achieve minimal runout. I recommend viewing some videos on youtube before doing this step. My first impression was that it runs very smoothly compared to my previous press. The table was square to the bit without need of adjustment. The slots hold down woodworking clamps very well, and it has slots for mounting a metal vise if needed. The table insert that came with it was very tight, but I took it out and cut several from 3/4" MDF to keep on hand. You can drill right through the insert to keep the wood from tearing out when the bit exits at the bottom. I have drilled several holes for mounting tubes in pen blanks and the results have been good. I am very satisfied with this press. Pros: + Well made + Smooth operation + Excellent table for woodworking (replaceable inserts) + Long quill travel (5") with one turn of the handle + Left or right side mounting of handles + Laser is easy to adjust and adequate for drilling most holes + Adjustable light angle + Relatively easy to adjust speed (compared to older drill presses) + Right size/power for woodworking (with occasional metal drilling as well) + Speed range is acceptable for most work, including slow speeds for Forstner bits Cons: - Tilt adjustment is not ideal for woodworking, but pretty much the same as other presses. Only the Delta seems to be better. - Depth adjustment is kind of awkward. It is not as good as the Powermatic or Delta, but better than most cheap presses. It may just take time to get used to it. ... show more

  • Nice stand alone drill press. Heavy, and requires two people to get out of the box and assemble
Style: Drill Press
As far as the drill press itself is concerned, this is a fairly nice piece of equipment. Expensive, but nice. Lazer sighting seems spot on. No runout(?) - wobble at the drill - as far as I can see. 5" quill and a fairly large worktable. Delivery was scheduled for July 5, but I received a call from the shipper asking if I could take it several days early. The assembly instructions that come with the drill press are not very clear. I had to hunt for a You Tube video to figure out part of the assembly. And as mentioned in the subject, this baby is HEAVY. You definitely need help getting the drill head assembly mounted on the post. Even getting the worktable on the post is best done with help. I managed it but wouldn't recommend anyone try it alone. Make sure you have your location picked out before hand, as once this is assembled, it's not going to be easily moved - without a strong second pair of hands. (I built myself a mobile stand, despite the admonishment not to do so as a safety concern.) I'm happy to have the Jet drill press, and I'm pretty sure you will be pleased with yours. Amazon does make ordering and delivery easy. (I tried brick and mortar stores first, but deliveries were much longer, and I would have had to pay for shipping.) ... show more

  • Great Press
Style: Drill Press
Very nice unit. Believe it or not I started out looking for an 8" press for small shop work. But almost immediately was looking for ways to make the table bigger. Too after several weeks of reading reviews and looking at the Big Box stores the quality was not there on the smaller units. Many of the reviews on the 8", 10" and 12" units were devoted to how to rebuild your brand new drill press to make it work right! I tried to adjust the belts for speed changes on one of the box store units. Probably could do it with a couple of breaker bars but it was just not convenient at all. I realize this is well above the price point of the cheaper small units and I am not totally knocking them but a this is only a few hundred dollars more that a sorta good 12 inch model and is a lifetime machine. I won't go through all the good points as that is available on Jet's sight but sales points for me were: Idler pulley belt adjustment, good led swivel light, laser, 5.5 inch travel with a very accurate stop which minimizes table adjustments, large table with standard through slots that will take any number of after market accessories. It also has a built in chart that shows you recommended speeds for various size bits in various material. I have it mounted on wheels (not recommended by Jet for liability reasons although it is very stable) so it takes up very little space and leaves my bench top free. It is also very quiet. Last but not least it looks way cool like it was built in this century and not the last. ... show more

  • Some Problems - Lazer, Light, and front panel control circuit board defective Some Problems - Lazer, Light, and front panel control circuit board defective
Style: Drill Press
Just received my JDP-17. At first glance it is a really cool looking machine. I put it together without any problems. Three things I need to address. First, the motor works just fine, but the front led panel board that controls the power to the led light and laser is bad, part # JDP17-104. I called the customer support number and they informed me of this problem. They will send me a form via email to fill out then they will send me a new board. They said it is something I can replace, we will see about that. I am very disappointed about this. What happened here? When you lower the table there is shudder and you must put some pressure on the table while lowering it to stop the shuddering.. The spindle noise is not very quiet. I have a over 30 year old Chicago drill press that is twice as quiet. Maybe over time it will quiet down some. As you can see I have some problems here. I really want this machine to come up to its potential. I expected more from JET. This is my first JET purchase and I am now wondering about this brand. I was originally going with Grizzly, but I thought JET was a better quality. Now I don't know. I just spoke with JET support about when to expect my replacement part. Today is June 21. The replacement part, JDP17-104, is on backorder till AUGUST 8! Make your own conclusion. Received new circuit board on 7 16 2018. No instructions so I will have figure it out or call service for instructions. CONCLUSION: I attemped to install new circuit card and had to call the service tech to get help. He was polite and helpful and guided my install. After about an hour I was able to complete the install. This was a tech service task because it was NOT a simple push pull install. I had quite a few screws to remove, wires to cut, wires to strip, wires to reconnect. The task is completed and everything on the Drill works now. One last thing I would like to note. I spoke to three different techs during this ordeal and not one time did these techs volunteer to inform me that this circuit board replacement could be done by an authorized Jet service center for FREE. I only found out because I asked the last tech what to do if I could not install this circuit board myself. Only then did he ask where I lived and then provided me with a local service repair center. If you have this problem you should get the service repairman to do this fix. ... show more

  • Purpose built for woodworking! Purpose built for woodworking!
Style: Drill Press
I spent about 6 months periodically analyzing drill press options for woodworking tasks and decided to pull the trigger on the JDP-17. I needed an upgrade from a 20 year old famous brand benchtop model. That old benchtop press wouldn't drill a hole in soft woods with a fostner bit; not for lack of power but because the quill run-out was so great that the bit would bind in the wood and stall the machine. My primary selection criteria were: 1) acceptable quill run-out: my JDP-17 has a quill run-out that is very acceptable at .002" 2) long quill stroke- greater than 4": yep, check that box too, the JDP-17 has 5" of glorious travel. The economy models have less than 4" of travel and that necessitates many more table height adjustments. 3) floor standing: check - no need to give up bench space or buy a stand. 4) low RPM capability for larger fostner bits: 210 RPM is slow enough for my needs, some models that only go down to 500 RPM wouldn't cut it. 5) ease of depth stop setting: the biggest pleasant surprise is the quality feel of the very positive and accurate depth stop. The setting of it is easily and quickly done. My secondary criteria were: 1) large, purpose built woodworking table: The JDP-17 table is awesome, the T-track slots are perfect for auto-lock T-track clamps and quickly adding a fence. The other big benefit of the table is its ability to rotate 90 degrees, which most presses can't do. I really appreciated the easily replaceable MDF table insert, I now don't have to build a sacrificial table top or stack my work piece on top of scrap which is a big time saver. 2) Built in LED work light: The LED work light adequately illuminates the work area and is very nicely located in back out of the way. This is a great contrast to my 14-Twelve bandsaw which has an optional light that protrudes out the front at the perfect height for me to continually bump my noggin against. 3) affordable price: the alternatives I was considering were at least $500 more expensive without a big enough jump in features for my taste. Going down the line didn't make sense either as I'd be giving up on one or more of my primary criteria. 4) ease of speed changes: it's not variable frequency drive easy but I am able to change speeds quickly without the use of tools and could do it one handed if I so chose. I'd welcome the convenience of a digital, infinitely variable machine but I don't think the value proposition is there yet for that feature. So far there are only a couple of negatives. First, the outer sleeve of the chuck has an annoying wobble noticeable when the press is running. The chuck grips the bit without inducing any run-out as the body and jaws run true so this is only a cosmetic issue. It was quite unnerving when I first turned the unit on after assembly but I'm getting used to ignoring it now. Secondly, the final issue I noticed is that the plastic "Spring Housing Cap" which is the cover on the left side of the downfeed handle has two broken retention tabs. So far, even with two of the three retaining tabs broken it has stayed in place but I might need to either get a replacement or find an alternate way to fasten it. I think the piece is mostly cosmetic but it might serve to keep dust and debris out of the return spring mechanism so I probably should keep it in place. Bottom line, I'm able to easily drill large, clean holes in hard maple using a fostner bit with no stalling or burning. To me, that's the ultimate woodworking drill press test and the JDP-17 passes it easily and economically. ... show more

  • Nice, but…
Style: Drill Press
It’s a very nice drill press, and I’m looking forward to years of use. My one complaint is that the laser and LED light lasted 3 uses during the initial setup and stopped working. While this doesn’t really effect the operation of the drill press, for the money spent this is a bit of a disappointment. Update: I finally received the new circuit board, installed it, and it fixed the problem for about a month. Turned it on today and guess what? No laser and no light. I really wish they would come up with a permanent fix for this issue. Until then: no more Jet products for me. I give up. ... show more

  • Totally changes my use of a drill press
Style: Drill Press
Going from an old bench top to a floor standing new drill press I expected good results. So in theory I should have expected it was going to work well. What surprised me was that it not only met my wildest expectations it was nice in ways I didn't expect. It's smooth. I mean very very smooth. The bit hits the wood without the slightest hesitation. It's hard to explain but other drill presses I've used there is a moment the bit hits the wood where you have to increase pressure, not this one, it allowed a smooth motion all the way through. I do find it a bit hard to set the stops, but that's mostly just getting used to the firmness of the wheel to adjust it. It definitely works very well and is quite accurate. Changing drill speed could be easier but not too bad. Wouldn't want to change it for each hole but once per setup is fine. ... show more

  • Once again they sent a replacement handle and it was fine. Still haven't used it yet as i'm awaiting ...
Style: Drill Press
So far i've put this unit together and it seems very solid. I had one issue with quality control whereby the gear that inserts into the table back could not be inserted due to the hole not being drilled to the appropriate size. To the tech support credit they quickly sent me a completely new table with the correct hole size and the gear fit perfectly. They also had to send me different handle which also had a hole for the setscrew that wasn't fully drilled thru. Once again they sent a replacement handle and it was fine. Still haven't used it yet as i'm awaiting materials to setup my dust collection system. One thing I would recommend when putting on the table is to lay the column on the floor which makes the process something you can do by yourself. But the head of the unit will likely need two people as it is very heavy (the bulk of the units weight) and not so easy to hold given its shape. All in all i've had a good experience so far.....I've already powered it up and it runs smooth with no run out that i can see (wobble of the head). And the unit base is pretty heavy making it stand steady on its own. ... show more
