I own two JBL Xtreme 4s and a PartyBox Club 120, so I have a pretty good sense of where the Boombox 4 fits. First, I think some reviewers make a mistake comparing the Boombox 4 directly to the Xtreme series. The Boombox is several times larger. They serve different purposes, and judging them as though they are direct competitors does not make much sense. I will admit that I did not love the Boombox 4 at first. My initial impression was that the bass was simply too heavy and too much of a constant thump. But it grew on me. With a good music source and the right placement, it sounds very good. Placement matters more than I expected. In a room around 12 x 15 feet or larger, the Boombox 4 sounds excellent and has room to open up. In a much smaller space, such as a bathroom or shower area, the bass can become overwhelming, and you really need to dial it back. Outdoors is where this speaker really shines. It has a physical presence that smaller portable speakers simply do not have. You do not just hear it; you feel it. I was also surprised by how well a single Boombox 4 held its own against my two Xtreme 4s and PartyBox Club 120 playing together in Auracast mode. That says a lot about how much sound JBL managed to get out of this unit. That said, I still prefer the Xtreme 4s for more relaxed listening. If I just want to sit back and enjoy music without a huge amount of bass and output, they are excellent. They are also much easier to carry around. The Boombox is portable, but it is obviously a much larger speaker. Price matters too. I bought mine for just under $400, and at that price I think it is an excellent value. I would have a much harder time justifying it at around $550. Finally, this is not a high-fidelity stereo system, and I do not think it should be judged like one. It is a boombox. Its job is to be portable, powerful, rugged, fun, and capable of filling a room or outdoor space with sound. In that role, the Boombox 4 does an excellent job.

I've been a longtime user of JBL products, but the Boombox has been my favorite speaker in their entire lineup. The built in handle, waterproof design, and fantastic battery life are what drew me to it in the first place. I owned the original Boombox for nearly 8 years. It survived dozens of camping trips in extreme heat, and was tested by FL beach trips, one of which ended in a violent rainstorm. It never failed me and could hold up to any abuse, which is why I have no problems recommending their Boombox lineup to anyone. My excitement for the Boombox 4 grew when I found out it would use an easily replaceable battery, simply by popping off the bottom cover. I had to replace the internal battery of my BB1 after 7.5 years, and it was a terrible experience that took around two hours, and was very frustrating at times. I told myself I would never buy another Bluetooth speaker that didn't have a hot-swap style battery compartment. I'm happy to see that the new speaker lineup does this. SPECS The new JBL Boombox 4 has significantly more power than the original model from 8 years ago. We're talking a jump from 40 watts to 200 RMS watts on battery power. That, combined with the larger drivers let me know that I was in for quite an upgrade. If you already have the 3rd gen BB3, I would think this wouldn't be a significant upgrade for you, but coming from the OG BB1 it most certainly was for me! The ports on the rear flip cover are power and USB Type C. APPEARANCE After unboxing the new Boombox 4 I could tell it was a bit larger than the old Boombox 1, but not by much. I'm happy to see JBL go back to a handle that appears to be a part of the speaker, instead of looking like it was thrown on as an add-on, like that of the Boombox 3's handle. It's also comfortable to hold, and the weight distribution of this speaker is spot-on. I can't tell that this new speaker is 1.5 pounds heavier than the BB1. Overall it's a very good looking speaker. The pictures don't do it much justice. You need to see it in person to really appreciate the craftsmanship. INDOOR LISTENING My initial listening experience with the new BB4 was ear-to-ear grin worthy. I immediately realized this upgrade was legit! There's so much more lower end grunt. While playing indoors at lower volumes, I found that for certain music genres I really appreciated the low-end bass boost mode. It provides the thump you crave, even at low levels. As you raise the volume up to anything over half, I find the bass boost unnecessary, and perhaps even a bit overpowering. That's likely subjective to each persons personal tastes, as well as music genres. It's nice to have the option to use it when you want it. OUTDOOR LISTENING My OG BB1 was my favorite go-to speaker for outdoor Bluetooth music sessions, and this one excels even more at that. The BB4 has significantly more power on offer, so it's easier to fill any space with fantastic sounding music. With our modest sized corner lot, I find that keeping its volume around the 50% point is plenty to fill our yard with great sound, while not being distracting to any neighbors who may be around outdoors. What impressed me most with the new speaker is how much further and clearer both the highs and low frequencies come through. With the BB1, once I walked away more than 20 feet the bass really fell off and wasn't too noticeable, but with the BB4 I can still hear the low notes from that distance. I'm truly impressed at what the BB4 can do as an outdoor speaker. To respect my neighbors, I didn't run the Boombox 4 at maximum output, but for the brief time I had it up around 80% it was obvious that this speaker is plenty loud for most people. AURACAST Next I paired the Boombox 4 with my PartyBox 520, using Auracast. I turned on both speakers, started playing music from one, then hit the Auracast button on each. Within 5-8 seconds they paired up and were in sync with each other. Obviously pairing a speaker like the Boombox 4 along with a much larger one like the Partybox 520 is going to create a situation where you mostly hear the larger speaker. This leads me to the decision that the best way to utilize a setup like this is to run one indoors and the other outside. For a nice sized party, the Boombox would serve well indoors and the PartyBox would be perfect outside. CONS If I had to knock JBL for anything with the new BB4, it would be their decision to omit the 3.5mm aux port. This was a feature all the previous models had. I know there's a USB Type C port for lossless audio playback, but it doesn't work with a Type C to 3.5mm aux adapter. I enjoy projector movie and game nights, and I used my BB1 for the audio when viewing content with the projector by way of a simple aux cable. I did a bit of research and discovered that my Google Chromecast has Bluetooth audio playback available, but not the Roku streaming stick that I've always used for the projector. I was able to connect the Boombox 4 to my Chromecast and use it to play the audio, so I'm thankful that works! Still would have loved a 3.5mm aux port. SUMMARY JBL continues to impress with their newer lineup of speakers. As bittersweet as it was to let it go, I'm happy to be rid of the Boombox 1, as the Boombox 4 is an amazing upgrade in nearly every way. I won't have to worry about complex battery swaps in the future, which is probably the main reason I went for the upgrade. I'm happy with the extra power this speaker puts out. For anyone looking for an all-purpose, outdoor Bluetooth speaker, this is the one! No need to worry about water or dust interrupting your music sessions. Stop thinking about buying a Boombox 4 and just pull the trigger!

Not perfect, but pretty darn close. As the owner of two pairing capable (left & right channel) Aiwa Exos 9 bluetooth speakers for 7 or 8 years, I have been very pleased with them. They are still very capable of holding down a party. On a vacation visit to family I stumbled onto the JBL Boombox 4 bluetooth speaker. By chance I during a birthday celebration 🎂 I asked if I could connect to my friends JBL BB-4 to my cellphone to play my reggae playlist. Wow! 👌🏾 👏 😍 👍🏽 🥰 ☺️ 👌🏾. Awesomeness ensued. I had to do a comparison as soon as I returned home. I immediately purchased a brown JBL BB4 from Amazon. OMGoodness, Wall shaking 🫨 😳 music came from the JBL'S that my Exos 9's could not reproduce. I immediately purchased a second. This time a black one. The available JBL Portable App is all you need to equalize, connect, create a left & right channel and more. Ok, you get it, I love these new JBL's. Finally, again I love the app. A day or so ago I could not get the brown speaker to connect using all the standard pairing tricks. Shut down, unpair etc. The app saved me as it gave me trouble shooting steps that if the speaker fails to connect to do a factory reset which got me back to enjoying these beasts. These are truly great speakers with sturdy build quality feel and great looks. Mobile High Fidelity 🎶 🎵

This speaker is freakin awesome. The only thing I don’t like is that it don’t have the 3.5 mm input jack. But I like how you can take the battery out. But it will not play without the battery inside. Even if plugged in. But the sound is incredible, the volume is incredible. I hooked it to my TV and watched a movie incredible.

I would like to start this by saying that I’m having to rewrite this as my first one violated community guidelines so I guess. But I wanted to preface that I have owned at least 1 of every generation of the JBL Boombox Series (1 OG BB, 2pair Gen 2, 2 pair Gen 3, 2 for the current JBLboombox 4!! I’m also extremely into audio and technology and speakers are an expertise of mine! I personally think that this was the biggest leap forward in the series and although I am still disappointed we reverted back to a 2-way system instead of the pioneering 3-way set up and that is a bummer but as far as feeling the music, want bass? Can’t get enough. These Boombox 4 CRANK that low Freq and can sustain a sub 40 Hz base note on battery for extended periods of time. I had no idea that physics would allow such a small item to create base like it does and that’s given proper acoustics of the room of the hallway ~~you know, you put your speaker somewhere and you’re like it sounds the best right here. That’s the soundstage (ish) but wow! The two base boost options are awesome and remind me of the OG BB with what was called “home and outdoor mode” When I’m rocking my stereo pair of Boombox 4s I basically always have the bass boost feature turned on the deep base (mode 1) and the other option (mode 2) is to have “punchy base” however I don’t recommend that one. Overall super happy with Bluee & Squad box! I will say that the only lighting feature on it is to me a very useful and fun incorporation of LEDs into a portable speaker as the color whether orange or white will show you from a distance what bass mode you’re in but also, you can verify it by a glance and rockin’ these dark orange glows, white punches or nothing at all. :) Oh and the Original JBL I got in 2017 is still working like a charm in a buddy’s garage of mine (battery is shot, must stay plugged in to use) But JBL will last a long time, there’s such a big variety to choose from on the Bluetooth market these days that you can find a speaker for any size occasion or prefer preference. Lastly…✅✅✅✅ AURACAST ✅✅✅✅HAS BEEN FLAWLESS!! 🤩 as I had connection issues with every type of linking JBL’s had to offer since Connect… so JBLs Connect, Connect+, partyboost, ect ….. no good! ESPECIALLY in a dang stereo pair. Now when I turn on both speakers, they automatically link into stereo mode and it is simple as can be and they haven’t even hiccups once for the hundreds of hours they’ve played music already. Well I hope this finds someone who I intent it too, That’s all folks!

This thing is amazing. The bass it produces is nice. It's very loud and clear. Make sure you update the firmware via the app. A lot of people will say it distorts etc on YouTube but I'm pretty sure it was when this speaker was released. I have two Partybox 100's, but they are not as portable as this. The boombox 4 also hits lower bass notes than my party boxes. I also recently purchased a Flip 7 and Charge 6 which all pair together. The other two are great also, but lack the deep bass I crave. The other thing I like is the fact the battery is easily replaceable. I've replaced a battery on an older Charge 3 but it never worked well or sounded the same (random pops and connection issues). The picture shows the size compared to a charge 6.

It's good for what it is, my complaint is not with the speaker so much as the iPhone volume is not enough for the speaker to preform as I expected . Bluetooth from my phone is the only source I use.
