  • Searched for a Great Sound bar system! Searched for a Great Sound bar system!
Set name: Soundbar System
Before buying the JBL 500 MK 2–5.1 sound bar system I went to my local big box and listened to it and saw what the retail price was almost $700. I tried models under it. I tried Sonos. I tried Samsung. The JBL500MK2-5.1 channel sound system sounded cleaner with less strain for the price point. What bites is the backwards app. I don’t want my bar on my WiFi stream and prefer to use it as a Bluetooth speaker for my devices. The only way you unlock more sound control is connecting to WiFi. The work around to using the sound contour control is to go through the WiFi setup and then say later and not do it. This unlocks your ability to tweak the sound bar. What I have found is the sound contour out of the box is really perfectly dialed in so I don’t F withit, the sound is that good. This is a fantastic value if bought on sale or open box. Build quality is excellent. Sound separation and power without distortion really stand out at this price point. I really dig how I was able to disguise the system in this production office. (See photos) I experimented with placement of the subwoofer because it had a strong wireless connection to the sound bar anywhere in the room. I tested moving the subwoofer away from the sound bar and closer to the listener for action content and I enjoyed the physical theater feeling of moving the subwoofer closer to my listening position for action content like Fury Road). For music I station the subwoofer next to the sound bar as seen in office photos. The sound can be a little harsh at very loud levels but at $459 it is a steal compared to Sonos or the other big boys I paid $459. Xmas 2025 I could have bought it for $399. I see them retailing during the illegal tariffs scheme as $699. $699 is too much IMO. It’s a great system especially for the price. ... show more

  • Seriously Impressive—Big Theater Sound Without the Premium Price Tag
Set name: Soundbar System
I’ll start by saying I typically gravitate toward brands like Bose and Sonos for home audio. In fact, I upgraded to the JBL Bar 500 MK2 from an older Bose system that originally cost me around $1,750, and I’ve spent plenty of time with Sonos setups as well. So I was genuinely surprised by just how good this system sounds. It actually made me realize I’ve probably been paying a premium for “name recognition” more than performance in the past. Not that JBL isn’t a respected brand, but Bose and Sonos tend to dominate the conversation when it comes to soundbars. My wife even joked that JBL must have accidentally sent us a more expensive model, given how good it sounded for the $550 price. The Bass Is the First Thing You Notice The 10" wireless subwoofer is no joke. Where my Bose system had what I’d call “polite” bass, this thing is powerful, even at lower volumes. I tested it with a bass-heavy song (A Milli by Lil Wayne) at volume 20 (sub level 3/default), and my entire family immediately reacted. The couch was literally vibrating. We have hardwood floors, which probably enhances the effect, but still, this is deep, room-filling bass with zero distortion. Big, Cinematic Sound for Movies Watching movies is where this system really shines. In the recent Superman movie, an early scene where he lands hard in the snow actually startled my kids... they thought something had happened outside. That’s the kind of impact this system delivers. Even with simulated Dolby Atmos (no up-firing speakers), the soundstage feels wide and immersive. Just note: you’ll only get Atmos when the content supports it (e.g., certain movies or titles on Netflix or Disney+). Regular TV watching won't, and will likely be PCM. The soundbar handles format switching seamlessly. Clear Dialogue Without Compromise One of my favorite features is PureVoice 2.0. On other systems, I’ve had to enable dialogue modes that flatten everything else just to hear voices clearly. Here, dialogue stays crisp and intelligible at all times, whether it’s a quiet scene or full-blown action, without sacrificing overall sound quality. PureVoice does this automatically based on the ambient noise in a scene. The balance between mids, highs, and bass is excellent. Easy Setup, Smart Features Setup via HDMI eARC was quick and painless. You may need to tweak a couple of TV (and gaming console) settings (CEC, passthrough), but nothing complicated. Calibration is also incredibly simple = press a button, and it tunes itself to your room. Because this is simulated surround, placement matters. Keeping the soundbar out in the open (not enclosed) gives the best results. I did opt for a higher-end HDMI 2.1 cable for future-proofing, but the included cable works perfectly fine. Why I Chose This Over Higher-End Models I considered stepping up to the Bar 1000 or 1300 MK2 with detachable rear speakers, but ultimately decided against it. For my space, rear speaker placement isn’t ideal, and I didn’t want the hassle of charging and moving them around. This setup strikes a great balance between performance and simplicity. Final Thoughts I wouldn’t call myself an audiophile, but I do care a lot about clean, immersive sound for music, movies, and gaming, and this system delivers across the board. What surprised me most is that it not only competes with higher-end brands—it outperformed my older Bose system in a noticeable way. At this price point, with this level of performance and a powerful included subwoofer, the value is hard to beat. If you’re upgrading from TV speakers or even an older soundbar, this is a massive leap forward. Comparing it to built-in speakers is a little silly, since it was a huge improvement over my Bose system, so it blows your TV speakers out of the water, into outer space, and beyond our galaxy. Highly recommended—and honestly, one of the easiest purchases I’ve made in a while. ... show more

  • Amazing!
Set name: Soundbar System
Wonderful! Best sounding soundbar I've used. No distortion, perfect balance of bass and treble. Have to definitely use the calbirate feature to get it setup for your particular room.. You have to put the subwoofer in a good spot. And tweak sound with the app. Typical JBL/Harman quality. I have always been a fan of this brand. The best part about their products is they last for years. Expect at least 10-15 years. ... show more

  • Simple and effective upgrade to small home theater.
Set name: Soundbar System
This is a great upgrade for a small home setup if you're tired of regular television-grade sound. I don't have a large enough room to warrant much more than this, and I didn't really want to deal with setting up extra surround speakers with wiring or fiddling with wireless and possible lag, so after reading some positive reviews here, I decided to give it a shot. I recommend just using the JBL app to run through the first-time equalizer setup and then you can also toggle a couple of settings on/off. I didn't notice a great improvement from using the dialogue enhancing option that the app had on by default. It's off for us right now, that was the only thing I modified manually. The only thing that I knew would be a pain for me was that my older LG tv (it's from 2018 or so) has ARC but not eARC. I do not claim to know the difference between everything there, but I had to use trial and error to get what I needed. On the off chance it helps someone else: - The HDMI input on my TV that supported ARC was one of only three HDMI inputs. - I have a PS5 for movie disc playback, multiple Switch docks that were previously working fine on an HDMI input splitter, and a Chromecast for regular TV stuff. - The Chromecast I left in HDMI 1 to avoid uproar in the household. - The sound bar had to go into HDMI 2, my ARC port. At this point, the Chromecast audio worked just great - no issues at all. Pretty much out-of-the-box perfection after doing the JBL app equalizing step. If you want something idiot-proof for regular streaming, you're going to be fine. - The PS5 games worked just fine when plugged into the sound bar HDMI in. HOWEVER, 4K/blu ray playback had noticeable lag between mouths moving and words being heard. I discovered whole worlds of settings screens in the PS5 and TV menus to try to alleviate this, but ultimately I surrendered to plugging the PS5 into HDMI 3, straight into the TV, and games AND discs were both able to play perfectly fine, no lag. From my limited understanding, this might not have been the case if I used eARC on a newer TV. - The Switch itself works great just plugged into the soundbar HDMI in. However, my previously-just-fine HDMI splitter did not work at all - the TV kept cycling as if the HDMI 2 input had nothing on it at all. So, my compromise was to use only one dock for TV input, which is acceptable. Just be warned that the soundbar input HDMI port may not behave exactly like what you had before. I'll likely have to redo some of this when I eventually upgrade the TV, but it was a pretty seamless upgrade for us other than disc playback. Since going straight into the TV we've watched dozens of movies and generally do not go above 20 if we want to have our eardrums intact. But I can hear the dialogue, music, and ambience so well, I'm suddenly critiquing movies on sound that I never noticed before. When we used an older DVD, it was a little less clear - kind of as I expected, after all it is a lower quality format - but still infinitely better than regular speakers. The bass is really satisfying and regular music has sounded good too, though it was just a YouTube stream so i am not getting fancy here. ... show more

Super easy set up - no wires to sub. Crystal clear voices from the soundbar and impressive bass from the sub. I bought two…. One for upstairs and one for downstairs.

  • JBL delivers...almost!
Set name: Soundbar System
This soundbar has great bass, but I find it lacking in the mids and highs, therefore a little disappointed in jbl as expectations were high. In my opinion, it sounds much better at volume, say at level 9 and above. It is very easy to connect, bluetooth is excellent, and the remote has great range. The unit has a room calibration mode, but I'm unable to individually adjust bass, mids and treble to my liking. Not quite the 5 star audio experience I was looking for. ... show more
