  • A lot of guitar for the money
THE GOOD: I cant say enough good things about this guitar. The upgrades they have made since the earlier addition really makes this guitar stand out amongst others. The picture on the listing still shows the old version, I was shipped a new version. The listing shows a maple neck (I've always hated headstocks that don't match the neck or the body color). They've switched it to a mahogany neck and it is a beautiful match with the rosewood fretboard. You get a humbucker, which requires no power, and a Piezo which requires a 9 volt. You can use either, or both. It sounds great both pugged-in and acoustic, but admittedly, acoustically, it will not project or resonate as much as a traditional acoustic, but good enough to be heard over the campfire if you wanted to. All the components seem to be great quality, the tuners are good and the neck is a straight as an arrow. I filed, rounded and polished the frets, conditioned the fretboard, I added two string rollers, re-strung it with some Earnie Ball Bronze Acoustic 10's, and it plays as good as my electric guitars. Although good, I may replace the tuners with some locking tuners. When I'm ready to change the strings again, I'm going to tape-off the guitar and spray paint the inside of the sound hole black , just because I think that would look cool. THE BAD: The only "real" flaw that's worth complaining about is that mine came with the nut chipped-off right by the high E string. That has to be fixed, but a $10 bone nut will fix that easily. The good news about that is because it's chipped, that tells me it's a real bone nut, not plastic. Hopefully yours doesn't come with a chipped nut, but again, it's a minor and easy fix. I haven't fixed it yet because I'm having too much fun playing it. The fret ends were OK, but not great. I filed them round, which I do to all my guitars anyway. It took about 30 minutes and now they feel perfect. THE VERDICT: It's amazing that IYV can build such a quality instrument for such a low price. This is my second IYV, and I didn't hesitate to purchase this guitar because I was very impressed with the other IYV I own. With a few minor upgrades and personal touches, this could easily become your go-to guitar because of it's versatility and coolness factor. I will be using it as my main guitar for my acoustic solo set, and switching my $800 Ovation to the back-up roll. That's how good it is. I'll watching and hoping the all mahogany colored one comes back into stock soon, I will purchase it immediately. ... show more

  • Great guitar if you can do some set up, part replacement, and fret work.
This IYV-IJGAP-200 guitar was bought at a price of $116.48 because it had a $50 amazon coupon that could be redeemed off of a $166 original price. I was not expecting much and thought I would likely be returning. The guitar I received definitely need some work to make it a very playable instrument, but now after the effort, I really enjoy this guitar. Here is what I received out of the box and what I did: 1. Guitar had a decent satin type of finish with no real issues that I could see. It is a mostly hollow body (basswood) offset style with a bolt on neck that is made of a mahogany like wood. The frets were a bit sharp on the ends with a little bit of "fret sprout". Additionally, there were 4 or 5 frets that were not level. The tuners were stiff and not smooth at all. Finally, the saddle did not intonate well at the 12th fret - especially on the low E string. 2. The electronics have a humbucking pickup and an under saddle piezo. When plugged in, the sound actually surprised me that it was very good for that type of guitar in all three positions (get into more of that in a bit). The wiring was not very neat inside the cavity, and the grounding for the strings and pickups was on a piece of stuck copper foil under the saddle that the strings pulled up against with a soldered wire to the foil. Not very inspiring. Correcting the issues took some work! - First, I leveled all the high frets, filed the ends to remove the sharp ends, and replaced the saddle with a better compensated one ($12) along with sanding it to be the correct height for the action I like. - Second, I replaced the tuners with some inexpensive but nice locking tuners ($30). I re-glued the copper foil and made sure that the holes were the right that the strings would contact the foil and that the foil would not fall off under the bridge. - Finally, I restrung the guitar with Elixir 10 - 47 electric strings and adjusted the truss to get the relief right. The result is an excellent playing and sounding instrument - no joke! I am blown away. What amazes me is the sound - it has a very good sound for the pickups. The electric humbucker sounds like an electric humbucker and is very usable (and quiet). The piezo is good for a hybrid type guitar - not like a full acoustic - but very usable. The combination of both is also really a good sound. I have used the big brand name version of this guitar, and I would take this for sound hands down over that guitar! I would rate this guitar a 5 star if I didn't have to put so much work into it, but for $116 and $42 in parts, this is a really great instrument and very usable. If you can do the work, just get it. If you cannot do the work, it may not be worth it to take it to a luthier to do all that work - probably cost $150 or so plus the parts. Anyway - for me, this is a real bargain and am very happy - a four star for sure and maybe five to me. Will update if anything changes. Hope this helps. ... show more

  • Awesome deal overall!
Guitar came set up perfectly with nice low action, no buzzes or sharp fret ends. This neck honestly rivals my U.S. Fender stat. It has a feel very similar. The finish has some slight imperfections but that's being picky. Sound is Excellent amplified with a lot of tone variations available. Acoustic sound is week but typical of this hybrid style guitar. I changed strings to Ernie Ball acoustic jazz and blues that really helped with volume and with a unwound G string play great. ... show more

  • Hybrid guitar - pleasantly surprised.
Cons: Probably need some TLC (polishing and sanding lightly the frets). The paint job is not that great. The neck is thick and heavy. The neck is heavier than the body. Probably need to lower the action of the strings by sanding the plastic bridge or use shim. Pros: The neck is straight, no sharp frets, well made neck. The overall weight is light. The piezo pickups are okay. The electronic pickup is ok. It produces interesting sounds if you play around with acoustic strings or electric strings. For little more money, you can switch out the pickups. Overall package is a really good deal for a hybrid guitar. Even if the guitar cost 2x the cost, it still will be a good deal. Instead of acoustic guitar amp, it produces more interesting tones with clean guitar amp (reverb, delay, and even chorus) and able to take advantage of both piezo and ceramic humbucker. ... show more
