  • Really soft
Size: 36-incch Style: 1000 I-Beam
3ft I beam level edit. At first I gave this five stars because I loved this level a lot and it became my go to when checking tiles in showers. I take extremely good care of my tools, I’m neurotic about it. I keep all level in cases and treat them with upmost respect. I had it leaning up against the wall and barely tapped it and it fell over, hitting one end on a connecting wall. No weight except for the weight of the level and it caused a slight bend. A bent level is a worthless level. It appears to my incredibly soft. As a subcontractor who cares deeply about my reputation I cannot recommend this tool. ... show more

  • A QUALITY level made from lackluster materials
Size: 18-inch Style: 1050 Magnetic I-Beam
I bought the 6' and 18” version of this level. I can't speak to the shorter one because I haven't used it enough but, my god, the 6' is INCREDIBLE! I am a carpenter and do some framing but mostly finish work. If you're in my trade and laughing to yourself reading this, I don't blame you. I would think a 30 buck six foot level must cost ten times what it saves because of its inaccuracy but this thing is DEAD NUTS--at lease the one I got is. You should check and ensure that your level is calibrated correctly (Find a level and a plumb surface, check it and flip the level around and check it again--if the bubble reads the same in both directions, you are all set. If it doesn't read the same, return the POS and write a negative review demanding they make them the way they did when I bought it {you can also check it with another level you know to be plumb and true if you want to get all anal about it}). This level is light! This makes working with it a pleasure. My theory is that this is also what makes it incredibly resilient when falls occur. Because it is so light, the force it creates hitting the ground doesn't act towards shifting the bubble as much as it would with a heavier level. The hard drop also doesn't pain your heart as much because you know at the end of the day you spent 30 bucks on it rather than the 200 you spent on that Stabila. The plumb level dial that shifts to gives you degrees is a throwaway and the worst part of this level. It may prove remotely useful in some esoteric, shotty calculation performed once in the level's lifetime. But please, fellow carpenters, I suggest you at least make this your second level. Use it as your framer for a little. Slowly it will grow on you. You'll see you 'accidentally' grabbed it for the kitchen you're doing. Suddenly it will take prime real estate in your truck or van, and that Empire or Stabila you had, when it finally craps the bed, won't be replaced because you'll know when you drop this one from a third story roof that it will either be OK or you'll have another shipped straight to your door in a couple days for a quarter the price a ‘real carpenter’ would have paid for a new level. Update: after a few years of use the level bubble on my 6’ has shifted. It’s still reading plumb so it’s relegated to tile work for me. I treated it with utter disregard so not remotely disappointed with my purchase for the 6’. Too frustrated with the angle dial to replace the level and have a stabila I’m happy with but if I got into framing more again I would get another one of these to alleviate job site level damage and theft anxiety. The shorter one didn’t read true so I suggest checking these right out of the box. ... show more

  • Did not drop or bang and level has gone OFF!! I am super disappointed, I am never buying IRWIN tools again.
Size: 72-inch Style: 2000 Box Beam
I own this level about 1 month. It has never been dropped or banged. It looks great, i can't see any bang marks etc But it has gone off... The first thing i did when i go it was check it was level. The old flip it around test test test until you know it is perfect. Today I was leveling a multi part ledger board, and felt something was up, my eye said the boards were dropping... so i went back flipped the level on several spot and guess what? One direction is now reading differently from the other. on closer inspection it looks like the center plastic box that center bubble in the middle has slightly shifted. It was hot and maybe the metal the plastic expand at different rates, maybe they use some kind of adhesive that failed. I really don't know, but i do know my $60 level is now nothing more than a straight edge. I want to be clear, i took prefect care of this level, it never left my property, nobody else touched it. I could have purchased 3 or more cheap ones and have gotten much better value. I dont understand why a 60 dollar level cannot be adjusted. Just a couple of screws would let me put it right. I hate having to go buy another level with a brand new one sitting there. I thought i was buying a quality product and i feel like i was ripped off. ... show more

  • Fragile
Bends easily. Build a case for it. If it bent this easily in shipping, it will bend on the job. Like any level take good care in handling and storage, especially if it is a long level. Box levels seem to be less likely to get bent.

  • NOT Magnetic, buyer beware !!!!!!!
Size: 48-inch Style: 1000 I-Beam
Specifically searched and filtered for 48-in. MAGNETIC levels. The metadata for this listing repeatedly came up in top five results and comparisons with magnetic levels. This was no accident. Someone has intentionally done this. I fell prey to it and didn't realize until it arrived that it was NOT Magnetic. Promptly returned it. Luckily I had Prime free returns. Buyer beware! Aftèr hands on local comparison for magnet strength, features, and apparent initial build quality, I chose an Empire over DeWalt, Johnson, & Milwaukee. Milwaukee magnets are too weak for working aloft. Johnson were good, but cost more than the Empire. None of the rest could touch the Empire anywhere near the $30-$40 price point. I was very surprised and happy with the selection after raising a steel frame building. ... show more

  • China made.
It's a shame, but Irwin is now making their tools in china. It was out of level from day one. Just not the same quality that the original designer/builder of this level use to make. My old one lasted 19 years. I didn't get one day out of this one. Really disappointed, as I need this type of level working on the Front Range of Colorado. ... show more

  • Budget friendly accurate magnetic level with a nice blue color!
Size: 24-inch Style: 1050 Magnetic I-Beam
This is a pretty good level. The magnetic feature works well and is worth paying a few dollars more than standard ibeam levels to have. The level is a good color. Has a bit more weight than the Stanley brand and other lower cost levels which is a plus. I have a 4ft Stanley ibeam level and it dented quite easily so having this extra weight helps. Has number markings if you are working with angles but the numbers are small so be forewarned. Level seems quite accurate. I compared it with other levels and got the same results. Only negative I would give this level is that the bubbles seems a little small. Not really much of a negative. Has a slot to easily hang from a peg board or hook. ... show more
