After reading some of the reviews for 400W HPS lights out there, I wasn't sure about the quality of the product I purchased. Particularly because of some of the reviews that said "iPower sucks, buy Apollo". As of this moment I am very satisfied with the quality of this 400W HPS light. The hood itself is well constructed. It feels very solid and reflects quality craftsmanship. The reflector are built into the hood, and all the necessary hardware to install this product into your growing space is included. There is about a 3" lip on the 6" vent ports so there is plenty of room to attach your ducting. When I purchased this I did not realize that it came with a glass plate on the bottom which is secured in place with thumb screws. The glass plate has rubber insulation around it so it can be a bit tricky to remove, but not too difficult. The hood itself is compatible with 400W, 600W or 1000W light bulbs, making upgrading easier, but you will need a different ballast for each. The 400W ballast itself is quite small and the power cords are long enough to place the ballast well out of the way. There is a selector lever on the ballast to change between 50%, 75% and 100%. I have run it on 75% for over a week with no problems and recently changed it to 100%. On 75% the ballast feels slightly warm, and on 100% it is warm to the touch but not too hot to put your hand on it. The grow light came well packaged and nothing arrived broken (some have complained about broken glass or bulbs - I did not have that problem). The hood with bulb and glass plate installed is on the heavier side so it will be easier to have another person help, but still very doable by yourself. Overall the installation was very straight forward and simple. I have only had this 400W light for a few weeks so I can't speak for it's long-term reliability, however if I were going to have a problem with it I expect it would have already surfaced by now. I purchased this set up and although I'm no pro I will say I'm highly satisfied. I recommend buying it with the HPS AND MH BULBS. I only bought the package with the HPS bulb and ended up buying the MH BULB separately which costs more that way. No complaints about light, works great. It's a plug and play setup so you don't have to be a genius to get it going. My bulb did arrive broken but I emailed the seller and they got back with me very quickly. I had a new bulb in two days. Bulbs are good and haven't burned out yet, ballast runs great and has built in than to keep it from getting hot but its not loud. I like how the ballast is dimmable, you can definitely see the light change when you go below 100% power. Not much else to say, the hood does what its meant to as well... Ipower seems to be the best value when looking at these grow like packages. Before a purchase I always read all the reviews and do tons of research; eBay, amazon, and just using plain Google. I want to make sure I get the best deal and I no I did! Compare the Ipower setups with you local grow shop, you will see why this is a great deal. Gets warm, make sure nothing is to close to the light. Update!! Everything is still good except the rope rachets. They don't wanna cooperate when I'm trying to lower lights. No instructions came with this at all, and little did we know there's a plastic film over inside of light fixture, thank God we were home cuz the fan went out so light got hot and plastic film inside melted and burnt, if we were not here we could if lost everything, we still out alot of money but atleast our house didn't burn down, you really should include instructions and a note stating that the plastic film inside of light area needs removed ... show more

Look no more! I shopped for lamps for over 2 months and this setup exceeded my expectations. This is not a cheap set by any means. My room stays at 78-82 degrees with a simple inline duct fan. Highly reccomend!!!!! UPDATE: Within 6 months the ballast started smelling like melting plastic. I kept a fan on it which helped for a little while until the ballast finally took a crap and my lights were off. I started looking over the ballast and cord and found that the power cord into the ballast had completely melted. iPower offered to take it back, inspect it, and send me another one. I thought about it for a day and decided it wasn't worth the postage and the disappointment later or the risk of a fire. I ended up purchasing a Lumatek air-cooled ballast. It is twice the size of the old i power and stays cool to the touch. I plugged it into the original bulb and hood and thankfully found that neither of those were ruined. ... show more

Anyone that is interested in purchasing a 1000 watt grow system should consider this one. It's an excellent price especially when you consider that a bulb, timer, and ratcheting rope hangers are also included. My ballast did turn out to be defective but iPower's customer support is top-notch and a replacement was sent out immediately via Fedex. The ballast comes with a 2 year warranty; just be sure to register your purchase and all will be fine. I also like the added feature on the ballast of using it at 600, 750 or 1,000 watts. I run mine at 1,000 watts but the option of lower wattage if needed because of grow room size, ceiling height, ventilation is a definite added benefit. Keep in mind that all HID (high intensity discharge) lights give off substantial heat. On a final note: If you can afford the price difference go with a 1,000 watt system rather than a 400 or 600. You'll be pleased with a larger yield. ... show more
