  • A small form PA that seams rugged, solid, and sounds good!
This review is from a blindness prospective. I can not speak on the units look, but I can speak on usage, sound quality, and accessibility for a totally blind person. Introduction: I am happy with this unit. The sound is mostly clean and it does have a nice bit of volume, please keep that in mind when reading technical thoughts below. use case Scenarios? Who may want to seriously think about purchasing? College students in Dorm rooms. Those working outdoors or in a large warehouse style building. Campers/outdoors men. Guitarists looking for a very clean sounding battery powered amp for acoustic guitars. DJ's looking for a small rig that won't brake the bank. Small groups/ small churches, toastmasters etc. Exterior features: Units outer casing is plastic which seams strong. I love that this unit has wheals and a telescoping suitcase like handle that pops up from the back. The unit is very easy to roll and control. The speaker grill is metal, much like on a PA standalone speaker. I feel a nice edition to a future version of this unit would be to ad a standard speaker stand tripod mount on the bottom so that it could be lifted up off the ground. As someone who can not see, I am unable to tell the battery status of the unit, as unlike some BT devices it's charge does not show up on a smartphone. Volume controls are easy to turn and have more play than I would like. I do appreciate the tactile mark on each volume to understand how loud the unit is without looking at it. Audio quality/sound: The Microphone included with the unit is a joke. If you want something intelligible, may I suggest the Shure SM-58. Audio output from this single speaker unit is obviously mono which is fine for events. The audio from the source is mixed from both channels into Mono so you aren't going to lose any single channel. The cab is totally sealed, no ports for bass kick which is a good thing for something that will be outside to not get dirt in the cab. Preamps are quieter than I expected. Inputs, jacks and Bluetooth seam to be quite hot, this is before audio hits the amp/volume nobs so nothing you can do about it. Using an iOS device, you need to have your device volume three clicks down from the top to eliminate audible clipping/distortion. Their is a ground loop/static when charging a tablet/device from the USB jack, and also running this same device into either the Line/aux or Mic jack Volume of the unit: The unit does get quite loud and is clear. The volume does cover a block depending on buildings in it's way. Remember that this is only one speaker, such as, one side of a PA system and runs off of battery, so it is quite awesome what you get. When you start turning the master up, you get a lot of volume right away. When you get past half with the tactile mark past 12 o'clock the amp is being pushed close to it's max for clean audio, towards clipping/distortion. Their is more play in the volume, meaning that you can turn the nob and not a lot of actual volume increase, but audio starts to distort.' Overall tone of the unit: sub bass/lows: Don't exist: 0-45HZ. though You will still hear mid range bass which accounts for sub bass in headphones or systems with no subs because of how a lot of today's music is produced. The G Sharp 50 HZ in a number of today's hip-hop songs though is present. mid range Lows: their is a boost between 80-150 HZ (especially when the bass boost is on) which is heard more in close proximity which seams to color the sound. At times, kick drums (acoustic/synth) are not always tight, quarter second delay and you hear a bit of an extra thump. Mids: Seam to nicely fit in the mix. Highs: It seams between 10-16KHZ drop off a bit which makes this unit seam a bit more mid range and bass heavy. Bass boost button, helps to tighten up the sound, is a must. No onboard EQ to customize things. If your using Spotify as your main music source, may I suggest the following EQ settings for cleaner less muddy audio. 60H/z=5 150HZ=-10 400HZ=-1 1KHZ=-1 2.4KHZ=-1 15KHZ=2 Guitarists: Sounds great with an acoustic with an active pickup running into the Quarter Inch mic jack. Honestly much cleaner than I would have expected. Depending on your pickup system, you may have to have your guitars volume at less than 100%/all the way up to keep from clipping. The boost in the mid range bass actually brings out nice tone in an acoustic guitar. This alone with it's battery power, at it's price point is a steal for an acoustic amp! Button/nob/socket layout. Face/front of unit top left side of panel: quarter inch Microphone input, to the right eighth inch line/aux input. Top Right side of panel: USB charging port. lower left side of panel: Microphone input volume nob, Same spot on the right side of panel Master output nob. Buttons: To the right of the microphone nob: top to bottom: On/Off, Bluetooth, FM, AM Bottom row of buttons are radio presets. On the right side very bottom button on row of presets is bass boost toggle. Back of unit: Power socket. Thanks for reading. I do hope this was useful for some. If I am able I am also going to upload videos with stereo audio examples of the units sound recorded through a pair of in-ear Binaural Microphones. (Hoping Amazon videos are stereo not mixed to mono) The audio is very lifelike. Please listen with headphones. ... show more

  • Beatboxing - YES
I've had this speaker for over a year now. It is still in perfect, working condition. My original purchase decisions were: 1) Can get LOUD, 2) Has great battery life, 3) Decent sound quality, 4) Can be used as a wired speaker for tv, and 5) Has microphone/karaoke input. I am glad to say that all of my purchase decisions were correct. This thing can get decently loud - it will fill up any house-sized room. The battery will last over 24+ hours of continuous playback. The stock sound is a little warm, but the highs come out just clear enough. I have the speaker hooked up to my computer, and with a digital EQ to balance out the low end, it sounds GREAT. Not to mention that when you do want bass, the bass boost will work pretty substantially. Finally, the feature that I was least worried about, the microphone, turned out to be pretty decent. The microphone sensitivity knob works as intended, so with a little adjustment, you can sound pretty clear for singing. As a bonus, the microphone works great for beatboxing too, as long as you use your own windscreen or pop filter. I have busked in public with this mic/speaker combo for over 50 hours now, and it has been an absolute blast. Plosive sounds, such as the kick and the snare, really come out in the speaker, and tonal notes come out clear and resonant enough. However, other types of beatbox sounds, such as hi-hats and cymbals get covered up. For the purpose of street-style beatboxing, sticking to kick drum/snare beats and simple melodies is what I'm recommending. ... show more

  • Loud, clear speaker
Sound: Clear, great Volume: Excellent to excessive Battery life: Not fully tested, probably at least 20hrs of continuous use I bought this to use for work in a factory where either the shop environment or other people with bigger speakers end up making it hard to hear your own music. It was between this and a slightly cheaper speaker from Wal-Mart that a co-worker had raved about, but in the end I went with this one for the brand name and reliability. It is much louder than any other speaker in the factory, and with my phone on max volume I usually leave the speaker at about 15-20% volume to not blow everyone else out of the water. I've been advised by a friend who specializes in audio engineering that I should avoid going over 50% volume on the speaker as it will probably blow it out unless you're listening to older, softer music that needs the volume to be boosted. I've never tried going above 40-45% for obvious reasons, but at those levels it's way louder than needed for any situation I can imagine. I usually leave it plugged in at work but I like that I don't have to if I need to move it too far from an outlet. I have left it unplugged for a full 10 hour shift, with it only breaking from playing music when I took my breaks and lunch, and it didn't drop below half power, so I would assume it can last for at least 20 hours of continuous use at 25% volume. Some things to keep in mind: - If you have your phone on max volume and are using the volume dial it won't need to go very far to be very loud. A very small turn can mean a huge boost or drop in volume, so it may take a bit of fine tuning to get it just where you want it. (Granted I use mine in a factory so I'm trying to balance it against co-workers' speakers so I may tune it a little more finely than most.) - It is fairly large, and while it does have the retractable handle and wheels to use it like you would luggage, it's important to determine how you are going to store it if space is at a premium. I used to leave my old speaker in my locker at work so I could keep it under lock and key, but this one is a lot bigger and wouldn't fit. I carry it out to my trunk each night now, and to make the trip easier as well as protect against the elements I bought an expandable military style backpack that the speaker just barely fits into. It's not fun taking it out of the backpack so I just leave it in there, and the power cord plugs into the back of the speaker so it's a bit awkward to have that poking into my back but the payoff of portability and protection against the elements is worth it. (I'm considering getting a power cord that has a 90 degree angled plug so it doesn't put unnecessary strain on the cord when it presses against my back, and then potentially putting a bit of foam behind the speaker, thick enough to be even with the cord, so it's just a flat surface.) ... show more

  • Not bad; inexpensive, sounds good, better if you replace the battery Not bad; inexpensive, sounds good, better if you replace the battery
I'm a professional electronics person, I bought this and here's the lowdown: It sounds pretty good, it (the 100w one) has a tweeter and a two-way woofer, it's ported. Bass response is fine, you can drive it to distortion but it's good enough to be fairly loud in a regular size living room; ideal for a small party. Bluetooth, line-in, mic-in and radio all work and sound fine. Comes with a cheap but acceptable wired microphone. Actual specs: It weighs 20lb, of which 3.5lb is the battery. Battery is a standard (alarm size) 12v 5Ah lead-acid, 3.5" wide, 2.75" deep, 4" tall, which is held in a snug compartment accessible by unscrewing the back, it's easy to replace. A 6ah LiFePo4 battery of those dimensions will work here fine (e.g. the $19 "HRBEENERGY 12v 6ah" on Amazon) , and give you somewhat longer runtime (stock battery is ~50Watt-hours, the LiFePo4 is about 77Wh) and is about half the weigh (1.6lb). If you feel more 'DIY' there is room internally next to the speakers to put a larger battery (probably a 12Ah would fit) but you'd have to figure out how to robustly secure it etc. My main niggle is that the internal battery charger supplies only 200ma which on the side of 'highly conservative' even for lead-acid; it will take a good while to charge, e.g.25hrs (!) ; the open circuit charge is 14.6v. The picture shows the current-sense shunt resistor (0.2ohms) used by the internal charging circuit; 0.2ohms with 200ma flowing develops 40mv; I'm planning to replace the battery with a 6Ah LiFePo4 and swap in a 0.04ohm shunt resistor which should result in 1amp charging (~6hrs to fully charge) or maybe I'll go nuts and try 2Amps (TBD if the power supply and rest of charging circuit will be ok with that). Basically for my purposes I'm ok with the runtime on a 6AH LiFePo4 battery (at decent volume level I'd expect 10hrs or more) but I do want it to charge quickly when plugged in; 2-3hrs would be great. This is obviously not going to happen with lead-acid but the LiFePo4 will be fine with 0.5C. This speaker indicates low battery alert on the front panel at 11v and turns off below that. Quiescent current when turned on is 100ma which is a touch on the high side. Peak current (pure bass tones playing, with the speaker distorting) drew up to 2amps but at a loud volume level it's more like 500ma-1amp at peaks. Opening it up reveals it uses a pair of class-D amp chips (2x AD52068 in BTL mode so absolute max 40watts each) It's pretty rugged, has wheels and a carry handle. Has an interior rubber gasket seal and looks reasonably robust. The USB port supplies up to about 1.2Amps before drooping, from current measurements it looks like it uses a linear regulator so isn't at all an efficient way to charge off the internal battery so I might investigate that further and maybe put a buck converter on the USB port instead. I'm happy with it for the money, it sounds fine, BT range is good, it's robust, and it's pretty hackable too. ... show more

  • This OMG!!!!! Is A MAZ ING!!!
We bought this for my daughter to take on away volleyball games. It is the best speaker, does not need to be turned up very load at all. She is 14 and takes it almost everywhere. Love that it has wheels and handle. It is perfect to getting in and out of buildings and down the hallways and sidewalks. She started coaching little league and her team loves it too. When they turn up the volume it really rocks!!! It has been a hit at sleep overs with the mic and singing. The price was amazing. We actually were looking at another speaker and her dad insisted on this one because he has the same ones out in his shops and loves them. He has had his for a couple of years and they have stood up to his usages and still sound as great as hers. I would highly, highly recommend this speaker! you will not be disappointed. The build quality is great, the sound quality is great and if it holds up as great as my husband's has it.....!!!! ... show more

  • Really like it Really like it
This thing has really good sound quality. The bass boost button actually boost the bass without altering the quality of the sound output. Most bass boost buttons are just preset eqs that really change the sound quality but not this one. The interface is really intuitive I was able to connect my iPad without even reading instruction manual. The microphone input works really well I'm using a pair of wireless microphones and having the dedicated microphone input dial really allows you to dial in the perfect sound mix. Using this thing with a connected iPad and using YouTube for the karaoke videos is a super easy way to do karaoke with family and friends. The setup takes a grand total of 30 seconds so it really encourages spontaneity. In terms of using this thing just as a Bluetooth speaker, it really shines there. The base is clear and it really plays the low frequencies very well. It can get quite loud if you want it to. The unit is also very light. I can pick it up with one hand easily. If I had to guess I would say it weighs no more than 12 lb. All in all, I would really recommend this thing for karaoke but also just as a speaker. ... show more

  • Its just as powerful as I hoped it would be.
It rivals my home system which has sub-woofer with a 8inch driver. (Clearly not the best system) But the Block rocker is mobile yet just as good! Radio comes in clear, and no antenna to break. Bass boost is PERFECT for lower volume/small room situations where you do not want it frustratingly laud, yet you want to feel that rumble. Otherwise you can turn off bass boost and let her rip! The speakers body feels as I would expect with nothing for me to complain about, handles are in great spots. Before I got this speaker I had bought 2, 30W, 70$ speakers (4 pounds each so they are more mobile) and linked them together. They where good, but man for almost the same price (Although many more pounds, and size, for me that is good, VERY good. Size matters with drivers) The block-rocker blows away anything I heard from those 2 and it does that at 30% volume, no bass boost. Add the rest of the volume and bass boost, Mic system that does not suck. (Not going to be a singer so it does what I would want lol) Radio for kicks, its the real deal guys. Other notes: The bass boost heavily effects the mic, have fun with that! It will NOT overcharge so don't sweat it. There is a fuse in the back under the plug, added protection is good and its replaceable so even better. Last and MOST IMPORTANT This has a replaceable battery, for those (like me) who intend on a Bluetooth speaker lasting more then a year, replaceable battery is a must, as that's the killer of many speakers. ... show more
