  • Using to monitoring indoor midwest air quality for sinuses and allergies
Size: 1-pack Configuration: Smart Air Quality Monitor only
The Air Quality Monitor (AQM) market is horrible for consumers. I settled on the Amazon branded AQM as it was affordable, it seemed relatively decent in regard to what it can monitor, and of course it works with Alexa so there is some added convenience. I should mention that I do not overly rely on digital assistants, I don't really have a smart home but I do have a few devices that have Alexa. I also did some research (mostly on YouTube)on AQM's and most of the affordable options, especially on Amazon, were inaccurate and manipulative. During the fall and winter months in the mid-west something strange happens to the air (there are also a ton of farms within a 10 mile radius of where I reside). It's nice to have more localized idea of what's going on with the air quality. The Amazon AQM does not give many details but it gives you some valuable insight and that's what I want as I do have some troubles with sinuses and allergies. I've only been using it for a few days now and I plan on getting a few more of these AQM's as it has been picking up some air quality anomalies. I'll admit that when these were first released I thought they were gimmicky and another way for Amazon to make money but I kept hearing great things about these little units so I decided to get one to try it out. As for how accurate it is, I really have no idea so I'm trusting Amazon and the unit. The temp and humidity levels seems to be spot on though as it is spot on with my analog and digital weather stations. I would recommend this unit but you have to have Alexa so you can set it up and get updates. If you don't use Alexa, I believe by default it will alert you with light color changes (green, yellow, and red) as to the current air quality. It does not have any other capabilities other than monitoring temp, humidity, particulate matter, CO, and VOC's and then it gives you a air quality measurement based on those five readings. ... show more

  • Good, second one I have
Size: 1-pack Configuration: Smart Air Quality Monitor only
Works well with all my Alexas. Very touchy about bread with scents like cinnamon and turns air quality to poor.

  • Nice Little Monitor
Size: 1-pack Configuration: Smart Air Quality Monitor only
"Little" as in less than 3" square - nice form-factor, Apple-esque or Nest-ish, and a good trend in most of Amazon's new devices. Connects to your Amazon speaker devices (Echo) and your Alexa app via your wireless network or Bluetooth. And speaking of connecting, this device had the easiest setup of any Amazon device yet - if you have an existing Amazon environment with connected devices, turn on your phone and plug in the device. That's it. It connects to your existing network and adds itself to Alexa. Done. If you have a slightly more complicated network, or it doesn't automatically install, you can add it as a device just like other Amazon devices very easily through the Alexa app, or scanning the attached bar code on the bottom will start the process. And it doesn't actually need to be connected to your network - it works independently and displays air quality visually on the device (red, yellow, green LED), though without a connection you don't get any specific detail or notifications. But kudos to Amazon for integrating all their devices so well. It also has what appears to be a threaded socket on the bottom, I'm guessing for a future wall mount. Again, design kudos. It's a compact, nicely integrated device to the Amazon ecosystem, that does what it is designed to do - monitor and provide information about the ambient indoor air quality surrounding it. That said, some additional comments regarding common questions I've seen about the device. It's a monitor - it does not connect to or activate any other devices that control the environment, or alarm, like thermostats or smoke detectors. It is an indoor monitor - it is not designed to operate outdoors. It requires a power source - it's not battery operated. It is not itself an alarm - it monitors 5 components of air quality (and Amazon apparently uses the US Environmental Protection Agency's parameters for "quality"): Temperature, Humidity, Particulate Matter (PM), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) - but it's not certified as a smoke detector, fire alarm or carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide monitor or alarm, and it does not detect radon, mold or natural gas. And it's not perfect - below. Great - Easy to set up and use. Small, fits almost anywhere (indoors), USB connection. - Comprehensive spread of measured quality parameters that cover the EPA's definition of air quality (as above): Temperature, Humidity, Particulate Matter (PM), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). - Provides visual verification (built in LED) and sound notifications of air quality through other Amazon devices. - Records measurements and stores trend data for a month. - Multiple devices can be used throughout your home. Not so great - Like many of Amazon's devices, still uses a micro-USB connector. With most new electronics using a USB C connector, this design quirk of Amazon needs to go away (easier to connect, universally compatible). It's also heir to the most significant deficiency in the Amazon ecosystem - if you have more than one Amazon account in your household (and there are excellent reasons for doing this) you can only connect it to one account. Unlike all of my Feit indoor/outdoor plugs, my Nest thermostats, my Kasa cameras and lights, and my Netgear equipment, all of which will connect to any account on my home network. - Like the obverse of Henry Ford's model T, you can get it in any color you want as long as it's white. More color options would be nice. - No easy or quick way to get individual readings - you need to open Alexa and go to the device. As others noted, a widget would be nice. - All of the measured parameters are not equal, and will affect the reported "quality" of the environment. The Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) measure, for example, is affected by paints and organic solvents, as it should be, which really do reduce air quality. It's also affected by scented candles, air fresheners, furniture polish (on furniture where the device might actually be sitting), spray cleaners, citrus fruit (as in oranges, lemons or grapefruit), various cosmetics, perfume, deodorant, aftershave, cooking, baking, probably a variety of other common household products that do NOT reduce the air quality. The sensitivity of this particular component can cause the device to report a VOC over 100, and your reported air quality to plunge to zero instantly. Which it is not. And then just as rapidly to go back to normal. So you really don't know what your air quality is, looking at the overall combination or the LED on the device, although you can view the culprit through the Alexa app looking at individual readings. And you can't turn monitoring on or off for individual components - all or none. Otherwise a nice addition to the Amazon Universe, and useful for keeping track of your indoor environment. Recommended. ... show more
