4 butterflies now alive about 2 weeks since my 5 year old grandson got this for Christmas. He and mom and dad enjoyed the project. We would recommend you sell the products only when the climate is good for the end results. In Missouri it is too cold to release the butterflies outdoors so they will just try. They are interested in doing this project again in April when the climate is better for the butterflies to be released.

I purchased this kit for my child and I as her spring science experiment. We were very excited. Butterflies! Cool, right?! The kit listed five caterpillars, we received six. We named the sixth one “Just In Case”. Five went into chrysalis stage within two days of each other. The sixth one took four days and never emerged. So we had one full dud. Just In Case didn't make it. Out of the five that did emerge here is what we got: -One that managed to rip a wing off and died. Probably against the holder waiting for the dud. -One that wouldn't eat and died. -One that emerged with a bent (cripple) wing on one side and a cripple leg on the other side. -Two that we released to go be happy, free, wild butterflies like nature intended. One of these are from chrysalis that had fallen from the cup lid, I laid them in the bottom of the habitat and hoped for the best. One was from a chrysalis still hanging on the lid. So move them all, because you never know. You want to guess what happened with the cripple butterfly? Let me tell you... Mommy felt sorry for it and couldn't deal out a mercy murder so now we have a cripple butterfly named “Sugar” who will be living with us for the extent of it's life. If you do not know already, painted lady butterflies have a life span of twelve months in the wild. Just thought I would throw that in. This is a much more extensive time frame than all the suicidal house plants I have tried to raise over the years. Soon we shall find out if Sugar likes to travel! So totally not joking... Sugar does not yet enjoy the fast movements and excitement her four year old owner expresses frequently, however is very calm and enjoys sitting on a still adults hand. Sugar enjoys going outside to explore, getting to perch for awhile and having fresh flowers put into her habitat to nibble and perch on to rest her bad wing. I did not want permanent pets. However Sugar does not pee on my floor, poop in my bed or chew up my birkenstocks. So, if Sugar likes to travel she is welcome to stay. *sits down to have a drink and ponder how I so quickly decided it was okay to keep a bug as a pet* A couple minutes later... Me: *steps on Sugar to put an end to what I assume may be an uncomfortable existence* Mother Nature: “You monstrous b**** how dare you!!!” Me: “Me? Hey lady, your the one who f***** up your kid! Haven't you ever heard of responsible parenting?!” *makes mental note to Google physical therapy devices for butterflies* WELCOME HOME SUGAR, WE LOVE YOU!!! My kid has been wanting a pet for a year. For a year I have said no because I don't want non human things destroying my home and tying us down. God found a way to get my kid a pet I could live with. Not only that, but God also made sure that pet came from Amazon, because He knows I buy 80% of everything here. The Orkin guy is going to be so proud of me when he comes out to do our preventative maintenance. I would not purchase another kit in the future, after Sugar passes. However, if Sugar survives our upcoming vacation I may purchase another caterpillar cup so she can enjoy having more friends like her for awhile before the weather gets too cold to release these pretty bugs outside. I may change my mind after I have had some sleep. I wouldn't purchase this expecting a high mortality rate, but it is a nice learning experience and interesting to watch, minus the sad bits in ours. I would say the kit itself is very much over priced considering what you get: a really small net, a small flower shaped sponge feeder, two restaurant style packets of sugar to make nectar, one tiny bulb syringe feeder, a lid stand (prop), instructions and five caterpillars. Based on our experience I would not call this listing a fair price until they change it to fifteen or so caterpillars and a much larger net. They NEED a much larger net because they can not properly behave as butterflies, all they can do is crawl around. In fact, they do stand a great chance of getting injured when they try to fly from bouncing off the sides. The small net is fine for Sugar, it is all she needs because crawling is all she can do. The others needed something far bigger and it often seemed they weren't happy in it. I worried when they would try flying in it because their wings are so fragile. It is like getting a dog and telling it not to behave like a dog. I think with tweaking the kit could be good, as it is I do feel it to be a waste of money and a highly inhumane set up. If I do end up purchasing some little buddies for Sugar I will also find a much larger net for them first. I would not gift this to anyone.

Style: Butterfly Garden with STEM Journal
The first one I ordered, I was SO excited. Once I got the notification it was delivered, I ran to get it. I was careful not to shake the box around. I noticed a gap in the cardboard box. I opened the box. It had the cup. It had the lid. It had a little booklet. And the net habitat. Where are the caterpillars??? I picked up the cup and realized it was cracked and a chunk was actually missing. I was confused because the cup was completely clean. Like if the caterpillars escaped through the broken cup and gap in the box, they made sure the be full before escaping lol. I asked for a replacement, which amazon was really good about honoring. It took a little bit longer to get the kit the second time around. Maybe a whole week. The caterpillars were already the size of my pinky and in like 2 days they starting forming chrysalis. 4 of the 5 hung to the top of the lid. The 5th took an extra 2 days to be ready. In those 2 days he knocked down 1 of the hanging ones. I decided to move the lid of 3 chrysalis into the net habitat. And put a napkin and the fallen chrysalis on it. I left the 5th one in the cup with a napkin to cover and then the flower butterfly feeder as weight. He turned into a chrysalis as well. The next couple days seemed like an eternity. It said they take 7-10 days in this stage. all of mine were out within 5 days. I was able to see the difference in colors and could tell which one would emerge next. 2 on the lid emerged first. Then the fallen one. I was glad I was there when the fallen one was emerging because I realized he couldn't get a proper hold to stand up. Rather he was laying on his back and the chrysalis shell was on top of him. He struggled for a bit until I put a plastic spoon in there for him to grab onto and then brought him closer to the net to hang onto. I knew I had to take action because I read once they emerge, their wings are still wet/crumpled. And it is important for them to straighten them out before the wings dry. The last one on the lid came out same day as the fallen one. I was expecting at least a day and a half before the last one emerged but like less than 12 hrs he emerged all healthy too!. I kept them for a couple days because I wanted my little cousins to be the ones to release them on the weekend. In that time I actually got to see them mating. Thank god no baby eggs. I wasn't ready for another batch, especially since I didnt have the food. I was going to give it 4 stars because of the error in the first shipment. But mistakes happen, none of us are perfect, and they allowed me to return and get a another one. So, 5 out of 5!
