Everything changed when the comet came...
Format: Audiobook
This one is almost certainly not going to be for everyone, but I really enjoyed it for what it was and can't believe that Audible was giving it away for free (they might still be). CONTENT Set in a sort of post-apocalyptical version of England, this story is told in different "episodes" which flowed quite nicely together in the way a television show might. There's a broad cast of interesting characters and a ton of supernatural conflict to enjoy alongside all the interpersonal drama. What may very well throw most people off is the way that this compelling story is told. What I mean is that this isn't really an audiobook in the same way that many are likely accustomed to. There's not really any prose or descriptions used in this story outside of narrated bits with characters writing letters to each other, making journal entries, or sending radio transmissions. The majority of the narrative is spun instead through dialogue and sound effects, making this much more akin to a radio drama (or at least what I think an audio drama is since I've only heard clips of some). I can honestly say that I've never experienced anything quite like this. Maybe it was just the newness of it all, but I actually thought this worked pretty well for me and I found myself appreciating the high production values a great deal. AUDIOBOOK QUALITY Love it or hate it, I feel like this is an objectively impressive piece of audio storytelling, if only from a production standpoint. Every single character has their own voice actor and this full cast even boasts several GAME OF THRONES alums. The use of sound effects (especially the really loud ones that act as a sort of jump scare) will certainly not be to everyone's tastes, but I was really impressed by how detailed they were and was actually able to form some very clear mental imagery of each of these scenes thanks to the audio queues. The action sequences are definitely the most chaotic and perhaps the part of this story that translates least effectively into this format, but they worked fine for me as well. CONCLUSION I think IMPACT WINTER is worth trying out. It's a very distinct listening experience, but people will likely be able to figure out after the first episode or two whether this one will work for them. I know my experience with this story has me curious to try other audio dramas in the future. (+) Full cast of insanely talented voice actors (+) High production value with the sound effects and background music as well (+) An epic story that's brimming with all sorts of fun drama (-) I feel like this is one that most will probably either love or hate

An Excellent Post-Apocalyptic Vampire Drama

Impact Winter is less of an audiobook than an homage to old-school radio dramas. Travis Beacham, along with a full cast of magnificent voice actors, a collection of sound technicians and foley artists, and a vast array of supporters (including the illustrious Robert Kirkman), brings to life a vampire tale that is both original and rooted in well-established mythology. When an asteroid impact devastates the world and plunges everything into darkness and storms, creatures that had hidden in the night are free to wreak havoc upon the human survivors. Hunted, and forced into hiding, sisters Darcy and Hope Dunraven find refuge with a band of refugees in an old military installation beneath a castle-turned-museum. As hopeless as humanity's future might appear, a glimmer of salvation may be on the horizon. But what sacrifices will be required in pursuit of that new day? The story that unfolds through the twelve episodes of Impact Winter is a thrilling one populated by characters who defy generic templates and archetypes. It's a shame that it has to end, though there's more than enough left in the air for listeners to hope for a second season. The voice talent of performers like Holliday Grainger, Esme Creed-Miles, Himesh Patel, David Gyasi, Caroline Ford, Indira Varma, Bella Ramsey, and Liam Cunningham has a lot to do with the compelling and captivating nature of Impact Winter. An excellent script only goes so far, and it takes the talent of people like those involved with this project to elevate it to the next level.

Impressively stunned!!
Format: Audiobook
I’m just amazed at how well the story was produced. To think of it as amazing is a mild description. It has been beyond spectacular!! The cast alone is tops!! I would not call this an audiobook. This was a movie playing in my mind. Literally. Between the music (which I need to see if available for purchase) and the background sound effects, I could see the action playing out. It’s been a hard day at work concentrating. Had not realized after over six hours I had not gotten up even for restroom. Only paused when work demanded human to human attention. The story, the dialogue; it’s all engaging to the point of being the only focus making it hard to function. The end… oh, you EVIL sneaky writer! Could not stop the tears. Then to laugh and clap like a mad woman. Glad I am no longer embarrassed in public by my reactions to good story telling. However, I did pray at the end. Me -praying!! Carefully listening to the credits, hoping for the cast to have it acted out for us to be later charged a fee. C’mon! Full cast!! Liam Cunningham!! His voice has always enthralled me. Seriously Amazon, I NEED BETTER VISUALS than my head!! -Still recovering. Will there be a final chapter? 🙏

Audio Books Will Never Be the Same

I wish I started listening sooner...and am already looking forward to re-starting the series. I've seen Impact Winter pop up a few times and while it gave an interesting nod to Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, I put off giving this audio a chance. I was amidst other audio books anyways, so I thought this could wait. Finally, it was next on my queue, and my jaw was dropped listening to the first scenes. I expected someone narrating a story...and got so much more. This is a full cast with the scene unfolding at the mercy of your imagination. Except instead of having a narrator tell me what I am seeing, I interpreted everything based on the general audible cues, dialogue, and sound effects. This felt like a dramatic comic book story come to life in the best way. Each actor and actress delivered a stunning, believable performance. I could see the characters and could feel the raw emotion or subtle clues of their true feelings based solely on the sound of their voice and delivery of their words. Honestly, I'm scouring for another title like this on Audible. The world building was magical and the performance captivating. I hope this sparks a trend to come AND I can not wait for a second installment! Amazing all around. I look forward to continuing to explore the world of Impact Winter.

I have to admit, I was hesitant on trying this one out. At first, I struggled to fall into the story with so much actually going on. Here Audible took a chance with a “production”, meaning this book includes sound effects and background to enhance the book’s experience. It is like listening to a movie you cannot see. After about 30 minutes, I actually was hooked and really enjoyed how this nontraditional audio book has been presented. Loved the story, loved the characters, and will actually enjoy listening to it again for parts and sub contexts I missed. The story itself follows a group of survivors as they deal with an apocalyptic world. A world where a meteorite has damaged the sun and vampires emerge and prey on the survivors. At times, there is a lot going on, and the story bounces around, however, I enjoyed its presentation. I feel like some people would experience sensory overload with some of the background and sound effects. Therefore, this might not be for everyone; however, I think more people should give this a shot. I would recommend trying to stick it out for one “episode”, pause the book, and step away. I am willing to bet most people will go back after decompressing and the actual story line sinks in.

I love audio books and this one has multiple voice actors playing the parts (as opposes to a single narrator/reader), but my goodness could the source material be any duller? I think not.
