  • impact winter
Format: Audible Audiobook
one of the best dramatised plays ever

  • Impressive, impressive stuff.
Format: Audible Audiobook
If its outsized promotional campaign, impressive variety of recognizable actors, and movie-level sound and audio effects demonstrate anything, it’s that when it comes to “Impact Winter” – Audible’s latest (and arguably highest profile) audio drama, the audiobook platform CLEARLY has high hopes for the long term viability of what they most certainly aim to be an ongoing franchise (to point: only earlier this summer, they also partnered with Skybound to release a tie-in comic book.). Of course, none of these grand plans will matter if either a.) reader interest isn’t there, or b.) the end product isn’t particularly good. While time will ultimately tell on the first point and whether the drama’s total “views” justify further extension of this universe, Audible likely need not worry about point #2…because “Impact Winter” – to put it bluntly – kind of rocks. Credit mostly goes to writer Travis Beacham, of “Pacific Rim” and “Carnival Row” fame, who delivers a deft blend of post-apocalyptic mania with a cast of characters that we instantly feel invested in – all in a tidy 5 hours. It also doesn’t hurt that the production values here are through the roof – beat for beat, minute for minute, “Impact Winter” sounds and feels like a big-budget Hollywood production. It may not reinvent the wheel when it comes to vampire stories…but as a potent representation of what the sub-genre can deliver when given the resources, “Impact Winter” delivers, and then some. ... show more

  • Everything changed when the comet came...
Format: Audible Audiobook
This one is almost certainly not going to be for everyone, but I really enjoyed it for what it was and can't believe that Audible was giving it away for free (they might still be). CONTENT Set in a sort of post-apocalyptical version of England, this story is told in different "episodes" which flowed quite nicely together in the way a television show might. There's a broad cast of interesting characters and a ton of supernatural conflict to enjoy alongside all the interpersonal drama. What may very well throw most people off is the way that this compelling story is told. What I mean is that this isn't really an audiobook in the same way that many are likely accustomed to. There's not really any prose or descriptions used in this story outside of narrated bits with characters writing letters to each other, making journal entries, or sending radio transmissions. The majority of the narrative is spun instead through dialogue and sound effects, making this much more akin to a radio drama (or at least what I think an audio drama is since I've only heard clips of some). I can honestly say that I've never experienced anything quite like this. Maybe it was just the newness of it all, but I actually thought this worked pretty well for me and I found myself appreciating the high production values a great deal. AUDIOBOOK QUALITY Love it or hate it, I feel like this is an objectively impressive piece of audio storytelling, if only from a production standpoint. Every single character has their own voice actor and this full cast even boasts several GAME OF THRONES alums. The use of sound effects (especially the really loud ones that act as a sort of jump scare) will certainly not be to everyone's tastes, but I was really impressed by how detailed they were and was actually able to form some very clear mental imagery of each of these scenes thanks to the audio queues. The action sequences are definitely the most chaotic and perhaps the part of this story that translates least effectively into this format, but they worked fine for me as well. CONCLUSION I think IMPACT WINTER is worth trying out. It's a very distinct listening experience, but people will likely be able to figure out after the first episode or two whether this one will work for them. I know my experience with this story has me curious to try other audio dramas in the future. (+) Full cast of insanely talented voice actors (+) High production value with the sound effects and background music as well (+) An epic story that's brimming with all sorts of fun drama (-) I feel like this is one that most will probably either love or hate ... show more

  • Audio PRODUCTION, not book.
Format: Audible Audiobook
I wanted to give this a go because it said it was attached to producers from The Walking Dead (including Robert Kirkman). A comet hits earth, clouding the atmosphere and making the sunlight disappear, which leads to the open emergence of vampires? I said yes, I could get behind that. And it has these really cool kinds of vampires too: there are mindless zombie-eating type vampires (kind of reminded me of I am Legend (the movie)), then shades which are like your run-of-the-mill vampires, then there are overlords which have gifted powers, and then there’s of course a vampire queen. Plus there’s a badass female vampire Hunter with a sword? Felt like a post apocalyptic Underworld. The problem I personally had with this one is that it is an audio performance, not an audio narration. I’m guessing I could have easily found that out if I did even the simplest research, so that’s on me. However, I have stated several times in the past now that they just aren’t for me. The performances were fantastic, so it’s not that I have anything against it, it’s just to the point where it’s more of a play, or like listening to a movie without seeing it, than reading. The production is filled with noises—scuttling feet, fighting, heavy breathing, background noise—sometimes to the literal detriment of the audio levels. And because it’s filled with those noises, there’s next to no description within the story. If you’re not fired up to use your imagination the entire time, this probably isn’t the one for you. It was not easy to listen to while going about my day. My biggest gripe though was that in between the chapters there would be music. Some of which was so bad that I actually considered stopping the entire thing, and it’s only 4.5 hours long. I hate music in audiobooks. Great concept, iffy execution. I don’t think at this point I’ll continue with the teased sequel. ... show more

  • Amazing. it's a modern version of a radio production.
Format: Audible Audiobook
Impact Winter was like a modern version of listening to an old radio play. It had sound effects and great voice actors. Some narration could have helped, but the story and voice acting was great. I had it on in the background while I was working on other things, so I didn't need to see it visually, except in imagination. It took a few minutes to get used to this type of Audible, then I was hooked when I was an hour into it, had to pause for a bit, then turned it back on while cooking. The ending teaser has me looking forward to Season 2. ... show more
