  • The how and the why of impact investing
UK author Sir Ronald Cohen earned his degrees from Oxford University and Harvard University and is the Chairman of Global Steering Group for Impact Investment and co-founder of Social Finance UK, USA and Israel as well as other important units. He is a pioneering philanthropist, private equity investor, venture capitalist and social innovator, the energy behind the global Impact Revolution. The tenor of this book, as well as that of the author’s life, is evident in his words he offers to the reader upon opening his book: ‘As this book goes to print, our economics are in lockdown because of Corona virus. Huge sectors of our economics have come to a sudden stop, unemployment is rising to levels unseen since the Great Depression and stock markets have crashed. The strains on our economic and financial systems are likely to ne orders of magnitude greater than those we experienced during the crash of 2008. Across the world, the people worst hit, once again, will be the most vulnerable to our societies. I hope the new thinking revealed in these pages will lead our governments to direct their massive economic measures in such a way that it creates the maximum positive social impact. Social justice must dictate our economic response to this grave crisis, so that we do not emerge from it with even greater pain, inequality and violent rebellion against the inequity of our system.’ With that thoughtful overview of our time and issue of hope for change, Cohen leads us through an overview of economics that is not only informative, but also a finely tuned challenge for change. His ‘Impact Revolution” is ‘fueled by impact investment, it will allow us to address the dangerous inequality and degradation of our planet, and will lead us to a new and better world.’ His concept: impact capitalism that aligns the private sector with government allowing the opportunity to work in harmony instead of opposition, attracting capital from investment markets to achieve a technology revolution, and marrying social and environmental impact with profit! This is an accessible publication that encourages us to rethink the ‘now’ and prepare to alter the future of our world for the better. Easy to read, important to incorporate, Sir Ronal Cohen has provided a sound resource to initiate the changes we so desperately need. Grady Harp, December 20 ... show more

  • Important for Purpose-driven Entrepreneurs
Format: Hardcover
Impact capitalism is what this inspiring book is about. "All over the world, capitalism and democracy are being forcefully challenged. It is becoming increasingly clear that current levels of inequality are unsustainable and people around the world, in both developed and emerging countries, are rebelling against the unfair distribution of social, economic and environmental outcomes," says the author, when talking about the 'invisible heart of impact capitalism'. The notion of impact capitalism derives from the term 'impact investing'. "Impacting investing aims to generate specific beneficial social or environmental effects in addition to financial gains. Impact investments may take the form of numerous asset classes and may result in many specific outcomes. The point of impact investing is to use money and investment capital for positive social results (Investopedia)". Educated at Oxford and Harvard. Sir Ronald Cohen founded Apax Partners in 1971, when he was 26 and it's now a huge global private equity firm. Apax has always had a commitment to the impact of their investments as well as growth/profits. They look to the UN Sustainable Development Goals to assess how they can contribute. Sir Ronald has spent many years working in the field of Social Impact Bonds (Pay for Success in the US) in the UK, US and across the world, that ensure that the impact of such investments is quantified. He is devoted to the practice of looking at impact investments through the lens of risk—return—impact, rather than just doling out money to social development and hoping for the best. The author is dedicated to solving bigger problems in the world faster—through business, NGOs, and Government itself, often in partnership. Startups and their drivers will benefit by learning the lessons of what he strives to share. I'm sure that had I practiced the idea of working impact and outcomes as much as my focus simply on purpose and intent back in the 80s, my own startup would have achieved dramatically better results. The message of Impact has to be heard and implemented if capitalism and democracy as a whole are to survive and deliver on their aspirations. This is an important book for purpose-driven entrepreneurs. The Impact book opened my eyes to the vast sums being committed to impact investment across the globe. But most of all as a dedicated stakeholder capitalist entrepreneur, the book reinforces the need for and role of impact entrepreneurship—and the fact that , as Sir Ronald says, "We can harness these two horses, doing good and doing well." Sir Ronald's writing style is very dry and the physical book is badly made, combining to make it a bit of a tough read. ... show more

  • Covers an interesting topic!
This is a book about business, but it is also a book about money, and many other things. Essentially, when you read this book, you are learning about the impact you have on the world, in different aspects. This title also talks about certain trends that have happened in recent years and what they may mean for the future. Certain things are explained that you may be curious about as well. For me, the best parts were the glossary and the notes, with the latter having a list of all the sources that were used. So, you have a chance to investigate them for yourself. In other words, there is plenty of additional information supplied in order for you to learn about all the parts that require more reading. The chapters aren’t hard to get through and are explained in a way that anyone can understand and learn from if they are interested. ... show more

  • Powerful argument for a new direction for business and philanthropy to transform society
Format: Hardcover
This book makes a strong case for impact investing as a means to transform the global economy by harnessing the power of business to address big problems. The premise of the book is that capitalism and innovation have had an extraordinary influence on the world, creating wealth, jobs and the hope of positive development. But these have come at a high cost: environmental destruction, deep economic inequality, climate change, child labor etc. etc. Cohen's solution is to draw on the power of business from the frame of Impact. By measuring the effects business has, for both good and ill, and setting those measurements alongside the traditional measures of profit and loss, investors can, for the first time, have a clear view of the real value of different businesses and their activities. This insight first powers the development of the Social Impact Bond, which provides an investment vehicle for social interventions that rewards the outcomes rather than the inputs of these interventions. Pay for a program on the basis of how much it reduces recidivism among individuals leaving prison, for example, rather than the amount of hours or days spent working on the challenge. Even more powerful, however, is the expanded notion that what economists have recognized as "externalities" of economic activity, can be measured and priced, as a means to see their true social value: the impact of particular activities. The author demonstrates confidence in the power of this impact mindset to reshape business and society for the common good. The book is concise, well-written and compelling, and draws on examples from businesses, non-profit and government programs in the UK, the US and elsewhere. It is based in a field the author has been engaged and invested in for many years, and the depth of his knowledge and passion is evident. ... show more

  • Insightful
Impact: Reshaping capitalism to drive real change by Ronald Cohen is a very insightful read that is all abut using capitalism to change the way our world works in order to create more opportunities for people, create more equality among everyone, and to improve our processes to save the natural resources that we have. I can easily see some people having issues with this book right from the first page because of the use of the word equality. Equality and capitalism are two ideas that typically do not go together. This is because capitalism typically favors that inventor or the creative mind over the worker's mind. That is why you see businesses, especially in the tech field, with owners or creators making far more money than the workers. The idea of making this more equal would give some reason to call foul because it may take away the reward for those who started or created something. This book shows that this is not the case. In addition, it shows that there are ways to begin using renewable resources to replace the fossil fuels that we have relied on and start fixing the damage that has been done to the environment. I think that just about anyone can benefit from this read because of the new ways of thinking that it presents and the solution based approach that it has. The author has clearly worked hard in his field to gather as much information and insight as possible, and then used it to put together a well informed and beneficial read. ... show more

  • Inspiring, Brilliant, full of rare, needed Hope
What an incredible, thought-provoking journey, that brings with it such crucial, rare hope. In a way, this is a birth of a system, and an ideology that makes sense; smart, real, doable - Human. Our troubling reality has been striving for sharp, bold, new ideas, while people are losing faith in a chance for a healthy descent future, and while the system (and capitalism) are under the threat of spinning out of control (environment already is). The answers that Sir Ronald Cohen brings are revolutionary yet applicable and urgent. A better future for humanity would never be possible if we can’t adopt such a system, that encourages and use the power of economy and entrepreneurship to do good. I know around me so many investors, leaders, as well as consumers, who all desire to do good - while doing well. They all desire to support those powers who are making an effort to be on the right side of history, those who seek the good. “Impact” structures a visionary mechanism and a method for the new order, while at the same time - this is a fascinating read, insightful, and so sensitive. Written by a legend, one of the most brilliant influential minds of a generation - both in the finance world and in philanthropy, this is a beautiful, compelling book, and a must-read for anyone who inspires change. ... show more

  • A must read
I would recommend this book to everyone, from young adults to grownups. I think that there is plenty of important, substantial information to develop our lives. What I like the most is the simple language and the clear narrative, because there are big topics that I could get in the lightest way. It is not necessary to have specific knowledge in many areas to understand successfully. Also, it brings new hope and perspective to the future of the economy. With this book, Ronald Cohen, explains how to use Capitalism to change human life and make a healthier economy system and not lose moral equality. The author is fairly expert in subjects just like economy and finance; all the information that is shared on this book has a solid background of study and science. ... show more

  • A fresh and proper look to capitalism
I am not sure if I know anyone who is not comfortable with our capitalism. Perhaps, there are sectors that take a thing or two about it and take on that to demonize it. Or maybe, there is just no right way of getting full hands on this venture. After reading this book, I have to say that its title (Reshaping capitalism to drive real change) is very well earned. This is a view of capitalism that is not very common, unfortunately, but I believe it should be. Some here have said that it is life-changing. Well, I am not going to say it is so but I did have those epiphanic moments where I could only say, "why aren't we doing this!" This brings me to the thought that everyone should read this book. THe book is inspiring as it brings us to think about a future for our families and children. Not everything has to be cold numbers towards a selfish ambition. We must all walk towards an "impact investment." I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in contributing to a better collective future. ... show more
