  • Own two
The only thing problematic with these stands is that they are 40" long when closed and difficult to pack and carry simply because they are so long. (To carry them effectively, you need a light stand bag. I can vouch for the Hakuba 400 -- sturdy, good zipper, good handle, a shoulder strap, good padding and with external pouches for other gear -- but it's 46" long. There are other offerings at Amazon. But I digress.) This stand is excellent. It extends to about 13 feet tall! Or it can be used as a wide-stance light stand or it can be converted to a boom for holding a shotgun mic or you can use the built in clips to hold a diffusion panel or reflector. It's a bit fragile compared to a solid steel C-stand, but it's also lightweight and more compact, except for its length. There are two extensions in the base and two extensions in the boom. There is a threaded hole in the end for attaching a counterweight and a cross-drilled hole for attaching weights. As with any boom, balance is key. don't expect this to hold up a ton on one end of the boom without counterbalancing it at the other end. I use it all the time for holding a shotgun mic. It would hold a small hairlight too. One trick: be sure to tighten all the knobs after you fold it up. They rattle loose and back out. You'll lose knobs and washers and possibly the built-in clips that hold the diffuser/reflector. ... show more

  • For the money it's great.
For the price I haven't seen any better. If you use speed lights (with brollies, oct boxes etc.) or need to hold popup backgrounds & reflectors this works great. If you are using studio strobes (especially for hair lights) I would go the expensive manfrotto route for peace of mind & safety. It could hold the weight but over time (a lot of use) I wouldn't feel comfortable with that much weight ware & tear on it. It has some "bounce" give and wouldn't trust putting more than 5 lbs on the extended arm. You do need (as with any arm stands) weight for the base and counter balance for the arm. I use 5lb ankle run weights for both and it sturdies this up real quick. If you are a speedlight shooter, this is the boom arm stand to get. ... show more

  • Not heavy-duty but ~1/2 the price of a similar stand.
I purchased this stand because I needed a tall 13' stand for an upcoming project. After looking at the Impact AC 13" stand and the Savage, I chose this one. After the project, I was looking for a reflector holder for my small studio...on top of the fact that I can use it as a boom stand. I'm currently using speedlights and soft softboxes/umbrellas in the studio. The stand arrived and as expected, it is a lightweight stand. Abusing the stand could cause breakage but I'll see how I do with it. I've read on other reviews that the lack of instructions is an irritant. I found the stand to be easy to set up and intuitive to use. The stand is NOT air-cushioned and I'll be adding a small sandbag as a counterweight in the future. But it is, exactly, what's advertised. If it passes the durability test, I'll be purchasing a 2nd one as an additional Reflector holder/boom stand. ... show more

  • This product is junk
I purchased this to hold my reflector but it is not sturdy and easily tips over with reflector on. In addition, the middle bar does not seems to be attached to the adjustment knob so cannot lock in place. When trying to break it down it slipped and sliced my finger. I would not recommend this product to anyone. ... show more

  • Works great, but be careful!
I use this stand to fly in an overhead shogun mic for interviews where I need to travel light (vs. using a c-stand). It works great because it folds up easy, is lightweight, and the arm is nice and long (+ a sandbag). With that said, BE CAREFULL! If you tighten the knobs too tight (and it really doesn't take much) it will dent the thin metal and the boom arm will no longer slide in and out of the center post. ... show more

  • exactly what i am looking for
I got this stand to hold up a 40inch orb softbox i have, at first i didn't know how it worked, but after checking on line i got the gist of it. after a couple of times use, i love it. The angles and positions you can achieve is just unbelievable, it is very strong, very stable. adding weight to the other side is easy as pie, you will probably find something around the house that can fit the grove for adding weight. This is a quality product, i would strongly recommend this to anyone looking to have extra bit control on the direction of light. ... show more

  • Not terrible but not strong enough for any serious work
I knew it was a lightweight stand but it proved to be too unstable for my uses. Quality is good and the design is clever but don't expect to put any more than a speedlight with a lightweight reflector on it. Anything more and its a bit scary to put over a model's head.

  • Multifunctional and good customer service
Been using this holder for close to a year with speedlights, reflectors and a mic for video. Works fine. Hole on end of boom for weight or a piece of nylon cord I keep with it. A few weeks ago, the plastic base section broke. I called Impact requesting to purchase the plastic piece for a diy repair. Instead, they sent out a whole new bottom section (3 legs and main center pole) under warrantee at no charge. So 5 stars for customer service. It is not as heavy duty as some other stands. If you are using it to help make a real living, I'd suggest buying two just in case given that it is not particularly expensive. ... show more
