I originally bought these for coolers, but they've found a permanent home in my swamp cooler. Dropping a couple of these frozen blocks into the water reservoir helps lower the water temperature and noticeably improves the cooling effect, especially during the hottest part of the day. Unlike loose ice, there's no mess, no extra water to manage, and no worrying about leaks. Just freeze them, drop them in, and when they're done, toss them back in the freezer for the next use. The blocks stay cold for a surprisingly long time and seem to hold up well after repeated freeze-and-thaw cycles. I've been using them regularly and haven't experienced any cracking, leaking, or performance issues. They're also useful beyond the swamp cooler. I use them in coolers, lunch bags, hurricane preparedness supplies, and road trips where I want reliable cooling without dealing with melted ice water. I bought four of the large packs and four of the small ones to keep in my 40L cooler for emergencies. We've had a couple of extended weather-related power outages, so I wanted reusable ice packs frozen and ready to go. It's also nice to be able to grab one for my insulated lunch bag when I need it. One thing I really like is that they're ready to use right out of the box. There's nothing to fill or activate—they're already gel-filled. They freeze solid and stay cold for a long time. I haven't had to rely on them during a power outage yet, but I have been using the large pack in my oversized insulated lunch bag. It keeps my food cold throughout the workday, and the ice pack is still cold when I get home that evening. The large packs do bulge slightly on one side after freezing, while the small ones stay perfectly flat. It's not enough to affect how they work, but it's worth mentioning. I considered buying some of the more expensive brands, but I'm glad I didn't. These perform well, and I actually prefer having a mix of the large and small sizes since they fit around and between frozen items in my cooler much better than one giant block would. ... show more

I used these going across the desert. I also added an ice block to the insulated bag. Everything stayed cool enough to use during our stay in a cabin. I think they will work well alone for smaller trips. The size is perfect and they stayed cool throughout the trip.
