  • Very high quality for such a low price
Size: 0-8"
I got this to be a "beater" gauge and save my Mitutoyo for "better things". The slide moves very smoothly, the display is easy to read. the jaws were well formed and honed flat (no light peeking through closed jaws). Even does differential measurements. Most importantly, it's very accurate. The only flaw seems to be that you could lose the thumb screw and the piece of rubber insulation and the back for the battery compartment. But that's true of most calipers. ... show more

  • I like the compact size of 4 inch caliper and big battery is nice.
Size: 0-4"
I have been using 5 inch vernier non-digital calipers (a modern/cheap knockoff and vintage German one) at home and I have access to a 6 inch digital caliper (PEC tools) at work. I love vernier calipers for woodworking because no worries about low battery or dust. They are easy to handle, light weight (only 87g), and cheap, but they are not easy to read, and only good for rough measurements. I purchased this iGaging 4 inch digital caliper for my woodworking. For example, I was testing my new table saw sled for accuracy and much easier to read off the number on the screen than trying to read vernier scale. It is heavier (147 g), but I still like the compact size of it (note: 6 inch digital caliper weights 162g). The iGaging brand is a better quality than really cheap digital caliper brands and I like the larger battery size too. I probably store it without the case in my top workbench drawer for easy access, and won't treat it like some precious jewelry - I would have bought Mitsutoyo for that. I think this caliper will fit my needs perfectly. ... show more

  • Worth the money!
Size: 0-6"
I never intended to get a digital caliper and was happy to stick with the good ol' dial caliper. But... there are things you can do with a digital that you can't do with the dial. So I came around to the decision to get one and did a little research. The iGaging Absolute Origin scored high marks from a number of sources so I went with it. I'm not disappointed. The readings match up with my dial caliper and this unit has some great little features. It has an auto off at 5 mins unused and I started out hitting the power button to turn it back on, when one time I picked it up and started moving it without hitting the power button... it turned on just by moving the jaws. Nice. The accuracy has been excellent and the only thing I could say even mildly negative is that it was a little stiff to move at first. It has loosened up a bit now and is easier to move with no effect on accuracy. All in all, I'm liking it. ... show more

  • A good, but not quite perfect caliper
Size: 0-4"
Overall, you get what you pay for with this caliper. I regularly use 8" mitutoyo calipers, but wanted something shorter that I was OK banging around for general purpose use, and this is a lot of value for the money. I've been using it every few days for 2 months, and feel qualified to write an honest review. First the good: +It's fairly inexpensive, so you won't feel too bad if you drop it. +It is pretty accurate (more about that later). It is accurate to the .001" tolerance specification in the certificate of calibration. +Overall, it's well built. +The back of the caliper has a fraction to decimal chart. + there is good contrast on the LCD display +I've left the caliper "on" for long periods of time and the battery does not drain fast. +The case looks different than the picture, but allows for a cutout for a base that turns this into a depth caliper as well. Now the not as good: +The locking screw on the slide is not retained, so it's just a matter of time before it disappears without a trace. Some of my other calipers have a retaining ring so this does not happen. +The feel of the sliding is a little more slip-stick than smooth, though I have cleaned it several times. + The directions and certificate of calibration are a little laughable... they include grammatical errors, and don't inspire confidence. +I would have preferred a clear case so I could tell at a glance if the instrument was inside or not. +As one other reviewer also found, there may be burrs on the jaws that need to be removed. I went through mine very carefully to explore why all my measurements were .001-.0035" off my expectations, and found that there was a tiny burr on the jaws that prevented it from closing all the way. I needed to very carefully deburr the edges and then used a superfine Arkansas slip stone to lightly go over the corners and faces of the inside jaw. This helped: the reading no longer wandered a bit when the jaws were pushed closed to .0000. I also verified with a light behind teh jaws that it was closed and no light was seeping through anywhere. I then checked measurements at 1.0000, 2.0000, and 3.0000" with a set of calibrated Mitutoyo carbide standards. And I then checked some random lengths with a Fowler (economy) Gage Block set (all at 70 degrees F). The results usually got me to within .0005" of the expected measurement, sometimes within .0015. This is, as stated in the certification, within tolerance, though there was a little more variability than I expected. Overall, this is good for the money. I also recommend the base that screws on and makes it a quick depth micrometer/caliper. ... show more

  • I Have Had This For 1.5 Years And It Has Been Flawless!
Size: 0-6"
Yes, I bought it just over 1.5 years ago and I really like this caliper. I like that I can turn it off, and move the caliper to another position, turn it on, and it will accurately read from that new position. It is fantastic. If I need to zero it from another position, no problem, just set the zero wherever you want and it will always be right on the mark. I bought this as an upgrade from the $18 digital "General" brand caliper that I was using and as a hand-loader/reloader, I need precision, period. There are a lot of recommendations out there and all suggested this as excellent choice. It has certainly proven to be an excellent choice for my precision needs. ... show more

  • First impressions very good
Size: 0-6"
My first impressions of this 6" caliper are very good. It has auto on when you move it and I confirmed it does auto shut off after 5 minutes, this feature is also listed on the manual included. So this feature appears to have been added since older reviews mention it doesn't auto shut off. Both the inside and outside jaws look well machined with no real gaps where they shouldn't be. The overall quality and appearance is much better than my old $15 Harbor Freight calipers. I like the absolute and incremental options which should make using them easier and require zeroing them less. I use calipers at work occasionally and for hobby stuff at home. So these are a good price for my purposes and I'm hoping they'll last a long time with some basic care. ... show more
