  • Possibly a decent music file player with wired headphones
Color: Grey
But I didn't test playing music files. I have some laying around here somewhere, but right now I am only interested in streaming music to bluetooth headphones. And the iBasso DX170 struggles with that. It is better than the A&norma S25 I had just auditioned and returned. That unit was physically too small and had sharp corners making the unit impossible to hold. Its single band 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and version 4.2 bluetooth made it impossible to stream smoothly to wireless headphones. But back to the iBasso. I like the size, weight and feel of the unit. The display is beautiful and a decent size. Battery size is good as are the packaging and accessories. The sound is glorious and rich with the Cirrus CS43131 DACs. I tried very hard to like this DAP. But the processor and memory aren't powerful enough to deal with my Tidal configuration. I spent more time watching the spinning wheel as the DAP tried to sort through my Tracks than I did listening to them. And I had to keep plugging my headphones in to keep Qobuz streaming from constantly skipping. Perhaps this unit had a defective BT transmitter. No matter. I am returning the unit. If you are only playing high resolution music files, you should audition this great sounding unit. But I can not recommend it for streaming. ... show more

  • Great Sound, but a little sluggish on UI
Purchased this to replace on older DAP that I had been using for years. The player looks very nice, and feels OK. It seems well put together, but feels a little hollow (it's pretty light, good for portability), and the volume wheel feels very cheap. Overall I would give the physical attributes a 4 out of 5. The Sound quality of this device is excellent. I used both streaming audio apps for low and hi quality, as well as a SD card loaded up with lots of FLAC files. Regardless of format the player did a super job of play back. There is plenty of power to drive the IEMs I tried, as well as the Over the ears. My HIFI 400ses needed high gain, but they could be driven. My biggest issue with the player was the interface. With android and the available streaming apps it is an improvement over a more basic player, however I encountered some slowdowns in the interface. It was annoying enough for me to return the unit, but another person might not be bothered by it at all. I think this is a decent entry to mid level DAP. ... show more

  • Incredible sound. Make sure to update the firmware!
I bought this thing to drive my Sennheiser HD6xx open-backed headphones, which are a little too power-hungry for most of my output devices. I considered getting a DAC to plug into my phone, but I got nostalgic for the iPod experience of using a device that's just for music, with no possibility that my musical reverie can get interrupted by a Slack notification. The sound quality is absolutely incredible, and the HD6xx sound amazing plugged into this thing, both on the balanced and 3.5mm outputs. This is my first DAP, and I'm not a card-carrying audiophile, so I'm sure there are plenty of diminishing returns to chase if you want to spend more money. But I'm 100% happy with the sound quality here and won't be trading up anytime soon. I was initially quite frustrated by the software, which would frequently crash when launching Apple Music, and would sometimes not register the volume knob turning, especially with the screen off. I'm happy to report that updating the firmware resolved all of my issues, so I'm mostly writing this review to encourage you to update if you get one of these. Go to Settings, then System > Updater to install updates. Note that it doesn't go directly to the latest version; if you're a few versions behind you'll need to install the updates one after another. Also, the updater is a little weird - after you install an update, it will still show an "Install" button for the same version after you finish installing it. So after the update is installed, you have to hit "Cancel" when it asks if you want to install it again, and then it will let you check for the next version. Finally, I recommend installing Niagara Launcher, which is an alternative home screen that's much cleaner and simpler than the default. See the attached pics for an example of Niagara vs the stock home screen. It's free on Google Play, which you can install via the APKPure app store that comes with the device. ... show more

  • *U.S. Market customers Readme, Great DAP, but not without some shortcomings.
Color: Black
Instructions for U.S. market customers: Use the pre-installed Chinese language app store to search for the Google Play Store app, then download it and install. The system will ask if you trust the file given its source, and you say 'Yes'. Once you've got the Play store installed, you can delete all of the Chinese apps if you'd like. My thoughts on the device- The good: -tested with Youtube Music and Tidal, sounds most excellent -The overall build quality of this DAP feels good. It has a somewhat reassuring weight, but I have to say it's lighter than expected. -It's a simple, handsome build with three dedicated buttons for Play/Pause and Track Selection +/-. The volume roller also acts as the power / sleep / wake button which. -Bone-stock android makes for a super simple, easy to understand user interface The not-so-good: -The volume roller controls the output level digitally, rather than by an actual analog pot., which works great in theory however the implementation here leaves a ton to be desired. 1) It doesn't work very well if the screen isn't ON. and 2) when it does work, there seems to be little rhyme or reason as to how much rolling the dial will actually affect the volume. Sometimes it will increase / decrease the volume dramatically, but mostly it seems to be make micro-adjustments. -The dedicated play / track buttons also don't work well or consistently. The button quality feels 'meh' at best, with very very little push travel, and zero feedback (no 'click'). This wouldn't be the end of the world, however I find just as often as not that I *didn't* actually press the button, and so this quickly became a frustration. Conclusion: Sure, it sounds great, and it looks great, but to own this you'll have to be willing to live with some major hardware flaws, and at this price point: that seems like an unreasonable ask. ... show more
