  • Decent piece of kit, not quite an upgrade over a normal siphon gravel cleaner.
Size: 12mm Hose
While cleaning an aquarium is one of those necessary evils, some gear makes it easier. If you don't have a gravel vac, either "manual" or electric, and you want to try and keep your hands dry...er, then this might be a solution for you. The trigger mechanism is stiff, since it's the initiator for the suction action, but once it gets going, you don't have to worry about it. I do wish it had a sponge insert to create a critter barrier, since I have both fish and shrimp in the aquarium I used this in, and I could 'hot-rod' it if I really felt like it. It comes with both a scraper head and a brush head, both of which I tried and seemed functional. It's worth considering if you don't already have a siphon filter or you have very deep aquariums. Full transparency, I"m reviewing this having gotten the gravel cleaner for free. ... show more

  • Water spills
Size: 12mm Hose
I liked the idea of this product. You put it in the water and pull the trigger a few times to start a siphon. Sounds easy, right? Well, here I what I discovered. I thought I could clean my 40 gallon tank without getting wet. Not so. First, I used one tube, but it wouldn’t reach the gravel because my tank is deep. No problem, it comes with an extension tube. I put that on, but quickly found that the connection between the tubes is not as sturdy as I’d hoped, and as I was moving the end of it in the gravel, it came undone and the extension tube fell to the bottom of the tank. I pulled the device out of the tank, and though I tried to empty the siphon tube into my bucket, a bunch of water spilled onto the floor. Then I had to remove my watch and roll up my sleeve and reach to the bottom of the tank to retrieve the tube. I tried again, and this time the two tubes came apart again when they encountered one of the tank ornaments. So I had to reach in and remove the ornaments. I had thought this device would be nimble enough to move around them, but not so. I tried the funnel-like attachment on the end of the tube, and it got clogged with gravel. So I tried it without that, and it did give me better suction power. Then I wanted to stop the siphon, and still had to reach for the end of the siphon hose and plug it with my finger, and spilled yet more water onto the floor. The positives is that it is easy to start the siphon, and there is a grate in the device that prevents expelling gravel into the hose. Overall, I think this would work better for a shallower tank (mine is 18 inches deep) so you don’t have to use the extension tube. I still had to get my arms wet to remove the ornaments, and still ended up with water on the floor so I didn’t gain anything really from just using a simple ‘manual’ siphon hose. ... show more

  • I cleaned my tank without getting wet!
Size: 9mm Hose
Color me impressed. This is the first time I've ever done a water change without getting wet! We have a 20g long, a 40 breeder, and a 75. I decided to use it first on the 75. First impression, wow, it has really strong suction! Like another reviewer, I accidentally sucked up too much gravel (and a couple plants). I also found that the extension tube was unnecessary, at least for that size tank. That being said, I took off the extension tube and put on the brush. I was able to suck up a ton of mulm without sucking up any gravel. I was extremely impressed with how well the trigger worked to start the siphon. The outlet tube that comes with it is also very nice and high quality. It is softer than the tube that comes with my other siphon, making it easy to pinch it if I need to cut the flow and release the gravel. I like that it has a small filter to prevent fish from getting sucked up, though small fry could still get through. It did get kinda nasty with dead leaves and such, so the filter will likely need to be cleaned after every use, but it's easy enough to do. I also tried using it in my 20l and found that even with just the one tube, it was a little hard to maneuver in the smaller tank. I will probably stick to using my normal siphon in there, just because I have a ton of plants, driftwood, and mosses and need to be very deliberate about where I suction. For a bigger tank, though, wow...I am never going back! Water changes are never really fun, but this was about as close I'll ever get to enjoying the process. ... show more

  • Tank Cleaning Made Easy
Size: 9mm Hose
Honestly, when this arrived, I was a little intimidated by the assembly required. My last tank cleaner was a one piece funnel thing that required vigorous shaking up and down to force suction into the tube. It was a mess, and I was letting my small tank get out of control because I dreaded doing the job. The funnel had no sort of filer, and I was dismayed to find one of my fish in my backyard the day after I had dumped the tank water last time I did a water change. I didn't even notice that it had gotten sucked up the tube. When I saw this cleaner with a simple trigger mechanism, i got pretty excited to clean my tank! This vacuum is better than I expected. Putting it together was not difficult once I actually read the enclosed instructions. I eliminated the extension tube because I just didn't need that much depth. This comes with plenty of hose/tube. I could have set my dump bucket across the room, but better too much tubing than not enough. I could shorten the length, but I think this vacuum will actually work really well next summer with my patio water feature. My small issue was that this thing almost worked too well. I sucked up a bunch of gravel and had to take the end of the vacuum off to allow the gravel to fall back out into the tank. I also sucked up one of my plants. I'm attributing this to user error, and I think I'll need another change or two before I get it completely mastered. I am happy to report that the cleaning attachment at the end of the vacuum did prevent me from killing any more of my fish. ... show more

  • Did not have good suction
Size: 12mm Hose
I was not impressed with the suction on this product. The plastic piece that connects the tubes cracked slightly during assembly. Assembly was not difficult. You have to pump the trigger a lot before it will pick anything up and when it does begin to pick up the gravel, it barely does. It didn't really clean anything for me. I will say that I do like that it comes with the attachment heads. ... show more
