  • Best jacket we've found for our dog! A bit pricey, but IMO worth it.
Size: 12 Color: Buckthorn
We have a chihuahua / terrier mix, about 12 lbs, and he hates wearing anything other than his own fur. However, with the multiple arctic chills we've had this year, we finally decided he needed some protection. From our standpoint, this jacket is awesome. Very well designed, keeps him warm, and most importantly fits him well. Buckthorn color is very cool. Easy to get on and off, even though it begins with an 'over the head' move. Our dog isn't super happy about that but some well-timed treats have made him more comfortable. I think the sizing is spot-on, but it should be said I messed up and bought one size too small to start with. Just be sure you do the back measurement starting and ending at the correct spots. Safer to opt for longer than shorter! Chest and neck adjustments cover the rest quite nicely. ... show more

  • Highly adjustable for a perfect fit, easy on/off Highly adjustable for a perfect fit, easy on/off
Size: 16 in (Regular) Color: Buckthorn
I had purchased an older version of this coat for a larger dog and was so impressed with the fit and quality that I returned to the brand for my new dog, a Beagle. Purchased the 16" Regular size and it fits him perfectly! For reference, the dog's measurements: Base of neck: 17" Back length (withers to base of tail): 15.5" Chest girth: 22.5" Weight: 25lbs 6oz Height at withers: 15" Quality: Impeccable with great stitching, great fabrics, straps and buckles and excellent insulation. Durability: Excellent. The last one I bought lasted for 7 years (dog passed) and is now being used by a neighbor's dog. I expect this new one to last at least as long. You'll use it for many years without any worries. With Hurtta, you really do get what you pay for! Fit: Perfect! It's very adjustable so you can tailor the fit precisely to your dog. Put the coat on over the dog's head. Adjust the 'base of neck' pull cord. Then buckle the chest strap, adjusting the strap length as needed. Then check length. If you need to shorten for your dog, flip the back of the coat over the dog's back and adjust the inner pull cord. You'll readjust the neck pull cords each time you use the coat, which takes about 1 second. The chest strap and length are 'set it and forget it' unless your dog is growing, or gaining or losing weight. He can pee and poop without soiling the coat. Has a harness leash opening. Easy on and off and no velcro. Warmth: Very warm. The Beagle really needs a coat with his low body mass and short, single hair coat. It's been in the single digits(F) each morning with windchills below zero. Often not getting above the low 20s all day. This coat allows my dog to be outside for about 30-40 minutes on a walk without picking up a foot, shivering, stopping or other signs of being cold. Because it fully covers the chest and thighs, it really traps a lot of body heat. The straps for the hind legs keep the jacket from sliding or blowing around. It's fully waterproof as well, keeping him dry which also helps keep him warm. It's so warm that it might be overkill in temperatures above 40F. Comfort: The coat doesn't restrict his movement at all. He runs, walks, climbs, etc. He has full range of motion, no friction, no chafing. He runs to me when I take the coat out because he knows he's going outside. He loves it. Color: Honestly, none of the colors they're currently offering are ones I gravitate toward, so I went with the color option I thought would make him the most visible: Buckthorn. Man, is it ever bright! 🤣 Makes him very easy to see in any environment. All colors have reflctive piping too. If you need a really warm coat with a great fit and will last for many years, you should definitely consider this one! ... show more

  • Tough, warm, well fitted coat. Tough, warm, well fitted coat.
Size: 20 in (Regular) Color: Buckthorn
Great coat, it keeps my extremely thin coated wimpy pit mutt nice and warm. She’s comfortable running and playing in it and it doesn’t slip. I don’t usually use the leg straps, but even without them the coat stays in place during all kinds of rough housing. The leg straps work well, they’re just an extra step and we don’t really need them. The fit is great. There are tons of different adjustment points so you can make it fit just right. I love that the neck and be tightened to keep heat in and snow out. My dogs play very rough together, but the coat is tough and has held up just fine. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Arguably the best mass produced dog product I've purchased to date Arguably the best mass produced dog product I've purchased to date
Size: 20 in (Regular) Color: Buckthorn
I am an avid hiker. I also love outdoors gear. I adopted a wild rescue dog 16 months ago. The most annoying thing about the dog industry is the lack of options for good fitting and quality harnesses, jackets, and backpacks. Ruffwear dominates this space in the U.S. for a reason. They're the only brand that mass produces all of these products with good materials and thoughtful designs. However, even their most popular harnesses and jackets only have 5-6 sizes to choose from. If your dog falls between sizes like mine, then you're stuck with getting a jacket that's too small or too floppy. Also, they confusingly maintain their chest sizing for their jackets as they do with harnesses, even though jackets should be about coverage. I have known about Hurtta, but unfortunately it's difficult to find their products in stores. The Ruffwear Sun Shower is the only rain or winter jacket I've purchased, and it is my least favorite Ruffwear product. My dog is at the low end of a Medium, so it is floppy and the hind leg straps are so loose it seems like they were meant for a Saint Bernard. Given their winter jackets use the same sizing and designs, I figured they would all have the same issues. So I took the plunge and tried my first Hurtta product, and it surpassed all my expectations. My dog specifications: Pit bull/boxer/German shepherd mix 60-65 pounds, short hair with a light undercoat that sheds 21.5 inch back length, 18.5 inch neck, 28 inch chest Wears a Medium for Ruffwear products Ordered the 20 inch size for the Hurtta Expedition Parka Pros: 1) Slips over the neck the exact same way as a Ruffwear jacket, but eliminates the recessed dual chest straps and uses a wraparound strap that produces a more snug fit and reduces adjustments. 2) Two elastic cord lock adjustment points around the neck. Ruffwear jackets do not have any. 3) Hind leg loops are tighter and stronger elastic than the Ruffwear Sun Shower 4) Leash portal is wider than a Ruffwear leash portal 5) The materials seem premium. My dog has continued rubbing against shrubbery while wearing the jacket resulting in a couple of grass stains and no visible fabric wear and tear. He's sprinted through bushes and palms and crawled under a shed at my parent's house. I think the outer shell is tough stuff. 6) The polyester knit fleece is soft but has a tight weave. My dog sheds a lot. The polyester knit on the Ruffwear Front Range catches everything. So far the Hurtta does not. 7) The insulation is not voluminous. It definitely warms him up, but is not too warm. I'd compare this to an activewear insulating jacket for winter hiking. 8) The legs flaps are not restrictive, he could still sprint at full speed 9) Lastly and most importantly, the fit is phenomenal. After reading a lot of reviews, I sized down ordering the 20 inch instead the 22 inch. I did not want a floppy jacket that could hinder his ability to run or hike for hours. The issue with Ruffwear jackets in Medium (27-32 inch chest) are they feel baggy and droop over his tail and hind legs. This jacket fits very well, isn't too snug, isn't restrictive on the legs, and ends less than 1 inch from the base of his tail. A custom cottage company would struggle to match this fit. I know all dogs are different, but here's a major advantage Hurtta has in this space. Ruffwear offers 5-6 sizes, Hurtta offers 16 sizes!!! There is just no comparison. It is much easier to dial in a good fit with a Hurtta jacket compared to a Ruffwear jacket. It's why I'm likely going to replace the Sun Shower with a Monsoon Coat in the near future. Cons: 1) There are no attachment points on the jacket for tags or a light. The upside of Ruffwear jackets is they include a webbing loop for their Beacon, a fantastic safety light. 2) The unique elastic cord locks built into the jacket are less intuitive and more likely to fail. They should've used standard cord locks 3) Buckthorn is a much softer orange than the product pics suggest. They should have made it high visibility safety orange because the other colors are even less visible. 4) Speaking of visibility, the harness could use more reflective strips. This jacket and many dog jackets add a few narrow strips and leave a lot of blank space. 5) I doubt he will stay dry in heavy rain. 10,000 mm waterproofing is primarily for snow and light rain. Given the material texture I would not trust this to keep water out for too long. 6) The leash portal snap buttons are not useful. A waterproof zipper would've been a better choice, or no closure at all. ... show more

  • Quality coat!
Size: 20 in (Regular) Color: Bilberry
Purchased this for my doodle who loves being outdoors in New England winters. The coat is easy to take on and off and my dog seems comfortable wearing it. The lining is soft, thick, and seems to be very warm. Although not many adjustments were needed, I appreciate the multiple adjustment points throughout the coat. This coat provides the best coverage of any coat we have owned, but still leaves room for our pup to potty without the coat being in the way. ... show more

  • High quality dog coat with customizable features--very nice!
Size: 12 in (Bull-type) Color: Buckthorn
This is a great cold-weather coat! The bright color offers good visibility and the reflective strip allows for light reflection after dark. The coat has multiple points of adjustability, including "secret" adjustments at the neck and under the back that allow it to be customized to fit a specific dog. It also has a tag compartment and a feature that allows the inner neck barrier to be snugged up against the neck to keep wind out. There is a central portion that fits between the dog's front legs and wraps over the back, securing the coat in place and keeping the belly area dry (even in the post-snow slush and mud). It also has better leg coverage than previous coats I have purchased. The only feature I didn't care for is the loops to hold the rear leg flaps in place, as they are too long for my dog. Nevertheless, I ordered three of these--one for each of my girls. Highly recommend! ... show more

  • Well designed dog coat
This coat has been great coat for our Colorado dog. It covers her both her shoulders and a bit of her chest to provide more warmth and less air going to her underside. It also goes curves down over her flank without getting in the way of pottying. The neck portion goes up to just covering her ears a bit giving her more protection around her neck and face without getting in the way of her desire to sniff and move easily. The adjustable buckle clips over the back so it is easier to clip than a clip underneath. The buckle also brings the coat closer to her body so that her body heat can stay better trapped inside the coat. It is fairly easy to get on and off once you adjust the belt strap to the appropriate size for your dog. We have not used the rear leg straps as they have not been necessary to keep the coat in place. I’m not sure how much a dog would tolerate those. However, you do not even realize the straps are there unless you try to find them so they are not adding bulk or annoyance to the coat. They might be more helpful for very windy conditions. I’m i’m not sure if it is heavy enough for much colder temperatures but temperatures from the low teens to the 40’s are what this coat seems well designed for. ... show more

  • Worth every single penny Worth every single penny
Size: 22 in (Regular) Color: Bilberry
Rather than point out the utterly obvious (ok but really, look how CUTE he is!!), here’s what you came here for: * EXCELLENT QUALITY as always with Hurtta. (Our two Hurtta harnesses and a Hurtta Monsoon Raincoat have stood up to 2-5 years of hard use now,l, and are still going strong.) * SIZE 22” fits my Welsh Springer Spaniel perfectly. This is exactly what the size charts said to buy. It is also the same size in this coat as he wears in his Monsoon Raincoat. (Welsh Springers are more or less built like English Springers but with shorter legs.) His measurements: 28” around, ~21” length, 56 lbs/25.6 kg. Pics were taken before I cinched up the back length an inch or so. I ordered the 20” and the 22” and kept the 22” because the extra length on the back leg panels made the leg loops fall at a lower and more comfortable position. In S-M-L sizes of quality brands, he is always a medium, though they are usually 3-4” too short lengthwise. Thanks, Hurtta, for all the different lengths!!! * BOY BITS: I’ve included a picture of his undercarriage. I love that even the 22” coat (on a 21” dog) leaves PLENTY of room for peeing without hitting the fabric. Also note that the leg loops are not too high or tight. * COLOR: “Bilberry” is a clear, heathered, medium blue. Not loud but not grey or drab. It’s a beautiful and sophisticated-looking color. Like some handsome movie star’s eyes, lol. The closest I can say is it’s kind of like a slightly brighter washed denim blue. It is NOT teal or royal blue! :-) * WARMTH: The insulation is good for a dog coat. I worry more about them overheating than getting hypothermic. It’s definitely warmer than the (uninsulated) Monsoon Raincoat, but not ridiculously so; this is exactly what I hoped for for our wet winter walks where we are being active in temperatures slightly above freezing. * EASY ON/OFF: Just pop it over the head, clip the belt strap, pick up each hind paw to use the leg loops (optional), clip the leash to the collar or harness (there’s a hole for that on the back), and out you go! (If your dog’s unsure about sticking their head into the neck hole, hold a treat in one hand and pop the coat over the head with the other as you deliver the treat. After a few times, the dog will learn it’s not a scary weird trap.) * CINCH CORDS: These pics were all taken without any of the three cinch cords adjusted—straight out of the bag. There is a stretchy adjustable cinch cord for the length, one at the base of the neck “funnel,” and one at the neck opening. This adds great, logical functionality, and is basically the same system as on the Monsoon Raincoat. *HIGHLY RECOMMEND! It was love at first sight for us. I hope this review helps! ... show more
