Description

The seductive reimagining of a Gothic classic—a repressed wife encounters a mysterious woman who awakens her desire in the “lesbian vampire novel we need.” (Them) NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NPR Best Book of the Year • Goodreads Choice Award Finalist • Book Riot Best Book of the Year It’s the height of the Industrial Revolution, and ten years into Lenore’s marriage to steel magnate Henry, their relationship has soured. When Henry’s ambitions take them from London to the remote British moorlands, a shocking carriage accident brings the mysterious Carmilla into their lives. Carmilla, who is weak and pale during the day but vibrant at night. Carmilla, who stirs something deep within Lenore. Soon, girls from the local villages fall sick, consumed by a terrible hunger, and Lenore begins to unravel. Torn between regaining her husband’s affection and the cravings Carmilla has awakened, Lenore must confront a darkness that will place her at risk. This immersive reworking of Carmilla, the queer novella that inspired Dracula, delivers a richly atmospheric look at feminine rage and the desires that feed our hunger. “I didn’t like this, I LOVED it.” —Taylor Jenkins Reid Read more

  • Absolutely fantastic! Met and exceeded expectations!
Format: Kindle
I definitely understand why this book was so anticipated. The story itself completely pulls you in. The characters are exceptional and help create a vibrant plot of twists and turns. The ending is perfect. I have read a lot of historical fiction and this one stands out for the way the language and writing style completely engulf you in the era. I felt as though I had spent the last few days completely immersed in Lenore’s time. The stifling expectations placed on women were fully felt. As was the joy once Lenore decided she could want and take back her life. Excellently written and I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a gritty historical fiction. ... show more

  • Beautiful
Format: Hardcover
I loved seeing Lenore's character development, and the scenery was beautifully written. I also loved that she kept some things a little mysterious, the answer is there but it's not just laid out plainly for you. I only wish there was more between Carmilla and Lenore. I didn't care for their relationship at all in the first half of the book, I wish we got more romantic scenes in the second half. ... show more

  • I hate to say it but I was kinda bored.
Format: Kindle
I rented this book on Libby at first then decided to purchase the book so I can have more time with it. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– This book follows Lady Lenore after she and her husband come across Carmilla's wrecked carriage on their way to their new property called Nethershaw. Their lives are turned upside down as they invite Carmilla to stay with them and everyone is affected. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– I thought this book was boring and was full of filler content. I thought the premise was great but I couldn't see where the feminism was located in this book. I still saw a lot of violence against women, especially from the FMC's husband to the FMC. I'm not sure how I feel about Carmilla and feel that she was a bitch at some points when speaking to the FMC. She wasn't even at the home for a lot of the novel toward the end. I'm not sure how I feel about the effect she had on the FMC, even when she wasn't physically there. I also didn't like Cora either but I'm not the type of person who can spend a lot of time in someone else's presence without feeling a certain sense of annoyance. I'm very introverted by nature so to spend as much time with Cora as the FMC did, I know I wouldn't have lasted as long as the FMC did. I feel bad for the FMC at the end of the day after everything she went through in this novel. I'm glad she got a "good" ending, even if it's ambiguous. I don't want to spoil the end of the book for anyone but I wouldn't necessarily consider this book to have your typical HEA for Carmilla and the FMC. I think that's the saddest part for me and it's one of the reasons I'd hesitate to recommend this book. If you want a good gothic vampire novel meant for adults and not teenagers, I'd say go for this one. However, if you want an HEA at the end, I'd skip this book entirely. Yikes! ... show more

  • Five stars all the way through
Format: Hardcover
Absolutely incredible book!! I'm usually wary when a book is marketed as a feminist retelling, because it's usually more booktok slogan than reality, but I *felt* this book in ways I really didn't expect to. It's evocative and visceral and left me breathless more than once. Normally I'm more of an e-reader person, but I'm honestly so glad I bought this one in hardcopy on a whim. It's one of those books I desperately wish I could read for the first time again, but I'll content myself with just rereading it immediately. Highly, HIGHLY recommend if you have any interest in Gothic or queer novels - it's gorgeous. ... show more

  • Desire vs. Repression
Format: Kindle
This is an extended and detailed adaptation of the novella Carmilla (written in 1872), but focuses more on the ways in which society forces the protagonist into a prison of her own making. The novel is atmospheric, and an easy read, but it really explores the theme of hunger and being alive. Hunger as desire, hunger as satiation, hunger as a way to feel belonging are the three different axes that intersect on the crumbling marriage that Lenore (the protagonist) has carefully constructed with her transactional husband. Although some of Lenore's self-pity and despair drags the plot, and Carmilla herself becomes more of an omen rather than a physical being, the novel still carries momentum and suspicion to push the reader along. This is not my usual genre of reading, but I enjoyed how immersive it felt. ... show more

  • Dark, hungry, and a little unhinged
Format: Kindle
"I want. I lack. I hunger." ♡ Inspired by Carmilla ♡ Gothic, Historical setting ♡ Saphhic Yearning ♡ Feminine Urge to not gaf When what is celebrated in men is punished in women, what is a lady to do but slowly begin to unravel? This entire book is a love letter to women who bear the insurmountable weight of societal expectations, all the while wrestling with the yearning, the hunger, that they are told to starve into extinction. Vampires have always been tools in media to showcase the danger of desire, but what if it is giving in to that desire that sets us free? "I want her. It is simple, and it is impossibly complex. In this brief moment, I know what I want. And I understand how completely that terrifies me. Because to want is it risk disappointment, and life has so bitterly disappointed me." In this tale, Carmilla maintains her mystery, giving little away. Her motivations are never made clear. She simply acts as the voice of temptation. Temptation for Lenore to break free of her husband's will - temptation to give in to her desires - temptation to become the person she has yearned to be. "I am a moth, battering myself against the light. So easily burnt in my desperation." ... show more
