  • Complex & largely incompatible with older Humminbird accessories
Size: 16-Inch Display Style: Transducer Included)
Humminbird APEX 16 MEGA SI+ CHARTPLOTTER Although I bought my unit directly from Humminbird because Amazon did not carry the model I wanted and needed, I thought it might be helpful to other potential buyers to get feedback from a product user. After using my Apex from May through October of 2025 here is my assessment. What I don't like about the unit: .. Every time you boot-up/power up the system, you need to pop out the SD cards and plug them back in AFTER the unit completes its boot-up, else the system will not recognize they are in the unit .. Compared to Helix, transitioning between views and moving around in a view takes more keypresses when menus are active .. The display back lighting is not as bright as Helix models; often very hard to read in bright sunshine, even at full brightness .. My new Apex is incompatible with my 3 year old Helix 15 and, thereby, the rest of my boat (360 Imaging, Minnkota Ulterra, Ethernet, Helix 12, etc..) .. The Apex 16 unit is VERY heavy in contrast to modern laptops and tablets AND even the larger Helix line of products .. The bootup time is painfully slow. It takes exactly 60 seconds. My Helix 12 takes about 16 seconds. .. It has generally slow keypress response time; electronics (CPU(s) and RAM/ROM/cache circuitry) seem under-powered .. The touchscreen is unresponsive at times across as many as four presses (Home button) .. The "auto" setting in DI and 2d is not as good as Helix. Way too much wasted screen space on the display. .. There is a major User Interface paradigm shift across Humminbird generations which leads to user confusion and frustrations when using mixed models .. Finding options is not easy, compared to other fish finder units. Seems very esoteric in nature and whimsically designed. Older Humminbird gen's nested menu structures, which were more consistent in how to find settings and made it easier to find selections of a given topic. Now, users need to memorize screens, views, and both location and meaning of the icons at surface level and which screens have certain icons and which submenus are invoked by them to have a chance to operate quickly. Trying to locate a Lakelist was impossible without doing a Google AI search. The Humminbird operators manual didn't help 3 experienced fish-finder users all studying and offering suggestions. .. It is common for the Operators Manual to be incorrect. Also, there are lots of options in the manual that need to be purchased, but it's not made obvious. .. Due to selection structuring and UI speed, more keypresses and time are needed for many submenu adjustments than previous Humminbird models .. Overall price to performance ratio is low, unless you have most or all purchaseable Humminbird boat hardware options (saltwater features, weather, anchors, etc.). .. I wish there was better color pallette matching between Autochart zerolines and Lakemaster contour colors to make sense out of the actual lake contour .. SD cards are too small for the fingers of most male fishermen to easily manipulate. They are very hard to pull out without forceps or long nosed pliers. Also, because they are a smaller size, they can't be used on older Humminbird models and, obviously, vice versa, with older, larger SD cards unable to fit in the smaller SD ports on the Apex What I like in the Apex: .. It has strong, robust cable connectors .. The view/screen configurability is great .. It's loaded with small, viewing controls and options not in older models .. Granularity and speed of chart zoom in/out are improved .. Waypoint editing was dramatically improved over Helix .. If you have a Lakemaster SD card, the Smartstrike feature is interesting. One never knows where fish will want to be on a given day, and I know my favorite lakes well enough to completely ignore Smartstrike, but it might be a great start for the lesser experienced angler. Recently retired, I spent 35 years designing software controlled electro-mechanical life-support medical devices. So, I've worked on a large number of mission critical, complex products with Graphical User Interfaces. Good luck with your purchase decision! ... show more

Size: 16-Inch Display Style: CHO (Control Head Only)
Very nice nice video & graphics. But over complicated menu system it takes hours to find what you want to do. Plus manual I got with this is mostly for the solex model leave you to scratch your head when directions can’t be found on the apex model plus can’t do software update with a Mac computer
