  • Great surge protector - Peace of mind for the less than stellar RV sites
After reading all the reviews I decided to go with the hard wired version of the Watchdog. I wanted to be able to pull into a site, plug in, and know I'm protected. It also keeps the process of set-up easier for the family to help with by not adding another step in the process. I didn't experience any of the issues most were in the hardwired Watchdog(a loud hum). I did alter my install with those reviews in mind. When installing mine I noticed that one of the install brackets had a little amount of movement. Anyone that spends time around transformers, welders, and other electrical equipment know that electrical components hum along with the AC oscillation. It shouldn't be noticeable on such low current as a 30a or 50a surge protector, but I could see how a loose bracket inside a closed compartment could make it sound worse. I solved the loose bracket issue with wrapping the steel bracket with electrical tape. I experience no hum and mine is completely enclosed within the electrical chord compartment. I hope this helps others that experience this issue. There are 2 possible CONS to the unit First possible CON to the unit is when you completely enclose the unit it makes it impossible for you to read the error codes without opening the compartment or using the app. Familiarizing yourself with the app and if possible installing it within a compartment that is easier to access then mine would solve the issue. Second possible CON is the light on the unit is super bright if you mount this unit in the open area of the RV/Trailer it will definitely be a large light source. Not an issue with mine as its completely closed off ... show more

  • Great surge protection and an amazing app
This thing is amazing! The app is great and shows you how much your camper is pulling in real-time. My old one had a delayed startup time, but this one is on in about 3-5s after plugging it up. It seems to do the job and auto-resets, which is nice as well. It's a great product. Do yourself a favor, hard-wire this in, and never worry about your surge getting stolen from the pole. I never had mine stolen, but the risk is now gone. KEEP THE PAPERWORK if you install this in an area that's hard to get to. While the QR code is on the device, I cannot easily get to mine, so having the paperwork nearby is nice when I got a new phone and it didn't save my protector. ... show more

  • Bluetooth is a great upgrade
I installed inside the camper. That was some work but only because of the tight space I was in. Once in it started working as expected. The Bluetooth hookup to see my power status is great. Not going back again Update after one month of use. I’ve had zero issues with it. Having read other reviews, I suspect that there certainly could be some bad units out there that need replacement. However, I also question people who claim that the unit keeps shutting everything down. None of the reviews mentions what the line voltage was prior to the shut down. I’ve been in parks that had poor voltage and transformers not up to the task of supporting the number of lines on the park. This unit lets me monitor my line voltage and hertz and I see the impact of increase the load on the overall voltage. As a result, I’ve been able to make quick adjustments, such as shifting the water heater from electric to gas, to help balance the power consumption in my trailer. None of this is difficult, it just takes a little self education on the nature of electricity, which, I’m sorry to say, many people are woefully uninformed. So I certainly do agree that there could be defective units, but there are some of these reviews that I’ve read that certainly suggest that the voltage was not going to support what they wanted to do in the first place. Using the Watchdog you can learn quickly about the nature of the electric hook up at your trailer and optimize your power use ... show more

  • Working great
I used this at an RV park on a hot weekend where temperatures were 90 - 100 F. It’s nice to be able to see power draw and manage it. Water heater and AC on my rig is pulling 28+ amps so no using the microwave until the water heater is off. Installation was pretty easy other than being a bit hard to reach. I added a new piece of 10AWG wire from the shore power to the unit and used the existing wire from the unit to the transfer switch. I added a couple of photos of the inside of the device. You can see the EPO relay that protects the RV and in another the replaceable surge protection board. The board has a fuse which is important in a big surge situation as the board will sacrifice itself to protect your stuff. That isn’t a common thing but it can happen. The app (iPhone for me) is great. Works when I’m in or around the RV. I’m happy with it and wouldn’t hesitate to buy again. A non-issue to me but possible to others is that it emits a tiny audible hum from the relay coil. It has to be very quiet in the trailer to hear and I have to point my ear at it. So if you are sensitive to sound don’t install it under a bed. I bought this built in model so I don’t have to worry about it being outside on the pedestal at the rv park ... show more

  • Worth the investment to protect your RV
I recommend the Hughes Power Watchdog hardwired unit to anyone looking to protect their RV’s electrical system. We are on our 4th camper and I finally decided to take the plunge and install this unit. We used it for the entire 2022 camping season and I’m very pleased with the results. Pros: Good quality unit, value for the cost Easy to install if you have basic home/residential/RV wiring skills Hardwired unit cannot be stolen off the power pedestal like the plug in unit can Phone app is handy for monitoring power usage and/or issues Can reset unit from phone (other brands may have to be unplugged from power pedestal to reset) Cons: White light emitted from dog face is very bright. I installed inside a cabinet to prevent the inside of the camper from being lit up. Phone connectivity is nice, however every time you walk out of range you receive a disconnect alert which can get annoying. Overall good product that I recommend to all RV owners. ... show more

  • Needs some space
Was able to remove the main breaker panel and secure to the back of the box. Beats carrying around a Surge protector and having to put it in line. No risk of it developing legs at campsites. Works as advertised!
