  • Great laptop, but dual-booting Windows 11 sucks.
Capacity: 16GB RAM | 1TB PCIe SSD Color: Spruce Blue
I have no complaints about performance, it's a great laptop in virtually every way, save one--setting it up as a dual boot system. I've been running dual and triple boot systems for 18 or 19 years now, and never had a problem setting up a dual boot system until I did with this laptop. It's hard to point the finger at HP when I suspect the problem is Windows 11, Ubuntu 22.04 or a combination of both, but it is the entire implementation of UEFI, Secure Boot, Fast Boot, Bitlocker, Windows, HP partitioning, and software signing that all works together like crap. I'm not sure Ubuntu 22.04 had its cert signing in order as it was just released, but Windows 11 refuses to allow a boot entry addition, and I've tried about 7 or 8 different methods with results from an un-bootable machine to having to reinstall Ubuntu multiple times. This all stems from Microsoft requirements for certifying a laptop, of course. As it stands, I'm tapping my way through F9 > UEFI boot menu options, making 5 selections to get to a Grub menu for Ubuntu (my primary OS ) and it's a real pain in the rear. I only use Windows for recording music, and the performance is great. Audio is great, built-in speakers are great, plenty of RAM, fast startups and shutdowns. It handles multi-tasking and multiple browser tabs really well. I generally have browser 20-40 tabs open at any given time (sometimes more) in addition to running other applications. I've run several applications doing some pretty intensive work tasks at the same time, and it manages just fine. Honestly, I feel that if I popped a new hard drive in and just installed any Linux distro and eliminated Windows from the equation, this would be as close to a perfect laptop as any. Alas, Linux is still a pain in the rear when it comes to audio, recording and software/driver support for audio interfaces--on top of manufacturer support for audio gear not even managing an afterthought in many cases. Great laptop. If you like Windows you'll love it. If you plan to dual boot, I wish you less trouble than I've had. ... show more

  • Great PC, terrible keyboard
Capacity: 16GB RAM | 512GB PCIe SSD Color: Spruce Blue
This is a great laptop for the way I use it. Light weight, cool running and quite powerful. The only real complaints I can find are the terrible keyboard markings/colors and the single channel RAM. Also I had trouble with the WIFI. I can barely make out the keyboard markings because they are grey on grey and no contrast. Solved this with a silicone keyboard overlay with white on black markings. I selected the 16 gB RAM version. When I opened it to replace a crap WIFI adapter I discovered one 16gb stick of RAM and one empty slot. I plan to add another stick of RAM ASAP as single-channel RAM can be a bottle-neck. As to the WIFI, I could not keep connected at my usual 250-350 mbps, I had to restart every hour or two. Solved with a new adapter. Other than these, no problems at all, and I found it easier to fix myself rather than send it back and pick another one. With the above caveats I can still recommend this PC as a good useable machine for my daily driver. The WIFI was probably a fluke and not a common problem, and you may not be affected as I was by the keyboard. I say "Go for it"! ... show more

  • Perfect!
Capacity: 16GB RAM | 512GB PCIe SSD Color: Spruce Blue
Student! Bought for college and I love it! Never had any issues with it. Runs games really well, and doesn't crash or give me any issues when downloading modifications for anything either. It lasts me all day during classes and has a great screen both for gaming and for my exams/homework/essays.

  • SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 5Gbps doesn't support display port alternate mode for displays when docking.
Capacity: 32GB RAM | 1TB PCIe SSD Color: Spruce Blue
SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 5Gbps signaling rate doesn't support display port alternate mode so can't dock on my docking stations. The HP Product Specifications don't mention that. Searching web shows that there are many people where this bit them in the butt. The SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 5Gbps signaling rate does NOT support Alt mode nor Power Delivery. You can NOT use it to - Charge your machine - Connect to an external monitor with/without hub/dock/adapter Everything else seems to be working. Not supporting video on the USB C may be the game changer. Will look at options, but leaning towards returning the machine..... HP support site has many questions on the SuperSpeed USB Type-C® not supporting video. A logical person would think that they would put some information on that somewhere. That is the real problem in that it is not readily available information on there website / documentation that they did not put the correct USB C port for video. ... show more

  • Great if you're looking for a small, lightweight, vy basic laptop
Capacity: 16GB RAM | 1TB PCIe SSD Color: Spruce Blue
This HP laptop w Windows 11 was recommended by a Karl's Technology contractor as a replacement for a failing 6yo Toshiba Satellite. Everything about the new computer is perfectly adequate, but after the nice finishes, thoughtful details & upgrades of the Toshiba, this is a big step down in quality. My own fault for being in a rush & not doing my own research. The HP has only 2 USB ports - I need 4, so now there's a hub to deal with. There was no media software installed, so there's a quirky app to hassle with. And instead of backlit metal keys shaped for finger pads, there's flat, painted plastic. I'll use it for a few yrs, & I'm sure it will be ok, but I already look forward to a better quality machine when this starts to wear. And from the plastic feel of it, it won't be long. ... show more

  • Almost perfect
Capacity: 16GB RAM | 512GB PCIe SSD Color: Spruce Blue
Start up is quick ! Two things that could have been done better is more space between the USB's, I cannot plug in a stick and mouse at the same time. I find the power button difficult to use, it barely rises above the surface.
