This laptop gets all the points for the interface components: - Excellent sound - Crisp screen with gorgeously vivid colors - Easy-to-access quick controls like volume mixer and internet connection tab - Clean, professional-looking exterior and keyboard Past the surface, though, everything falls apart completely unless you live (and pay) your entire life online. You cannot download any type of office software AT ALL. Want to use Office? Already paid for a copy? Too bad. You have to buy a monthly subscription to use the app version of Office online! That or do all your work in Google docs. As someone who is required to use Office for work and who already paid full price for a copy, I am appalled that I got a brand new laptop that is *useless* for my needs. I am doubly annoyed because this feature/restriction wasn't noted anywhere - if I'd known I never would have gone for this. Nor can you download pretty much anything else - any information, documents, photos, etc. that you want to store you either have to keep online or you have to have an external harddrive or jump drives for. The computer also keeps resetting to its original browser 'defaults' ever time I turn it off (and it subsequently updates), even though I've gone through and changed them because the default search engines, etc. are terrible. TL/DR: If you already live your entire life online and already pay to keep all of your information, documents, etc. in cloud storage or on an external harddrive and you're a big fan of google, this will be the perfect laptop for you and you'll love it. If you actually need/want anything on the computer itself - and to avoid the pile of monthly payments that come with totally online work/storage - this laptop will do nothing for you.     • Almost perfect but has heating issues

This chromebook was a big upgrade from my 6 year old chromebook but in one way it felt like taking a step back. My old chromebook for the same price point had a fan and never had overheating issues unless I really pushed it. This new style of chromebook however doesn't utilize fan cooling and claims that the new processor chips are created to not require anything beyond passive cooling by temporarily dropping the chip power if things get too hot. This might work for people simply using the device as a document tool, but the world has shifted to streaming entertainment media and that is where this chromebook falls very short. While the chromebook has a 1080p screen it can only stream 1080p content for maybe 30 minutes before the chip is forced to scale down in power to help cool off. Doing this demolishes the chromebooks ability to stream content, causes lots of hitching and lagging, and makes you either turn the content down BELOW 720p to cool off or just stop streaming content altogether. This is a big deal since a lot of people are going to want to stream at the resolution the screen is capable of. Other than that the HP 14 works great. ... show more

My husband is not "computer" oriented, and he only uses one for eMail, to read and print PDFs, to read the news and watch the occasional video. I have the "real" computer for bookkeeping, graphics and some other heavy lifting. His "laptop," as it were, was an inexpensive Windows model that couldn't be upgraded, except for security updates. It was cheap and he was happy. But it's slowed to a crawl. We've cleaned out files and unused apps, defragged, all the stuff, but it's reached its end time. As he has a Pixel phone, this Chromebook seemed a great way to sync his world in a way he couldn't easily do before (reminder, he's not computer savvy). And so far so good. Again, not computer savvy, so he didn't set up the Chromebook. But he COULD have, I think. It only took a few minutes, once signed in with his Google eMail, it understood all his needs and he was ready to go. If I would have given it up. I LOVE this thing! It's fast. It's quiet because it has a solid state drive. The speaker quality is great. The screen images are crisp. The touchpad is attentive. The standby battery life lasts for a week. It's lightweight. And it's pretty. You can't load many of the apps you'd expect. They aren't available in the Play Store. Facebook, Netflix, Hulu all have to be accessed through the web browser. That's fine, just go to the site once, sign in, then bookmark it to the favorites bar. Every time after, open browser, click, you're there. I was able to load Microsoft Word which my husband rarely uses, but just in case he needed it, why not. It's a mobile version of Word, not the full program, but it's pretty darned full. For anyone in your world who doesn't particularly like a tablet, but prefers something with a keyboard (without traveling with an extra keyboard to go with a tablet), this is a simple, inexpensive and elegant choice. I don't even need it and I want one for myself. But (sigh) it's time to turn it over to husband. I'll report back if we run into any problems, although I'm not anticipating any.     • WARNING - Stops working randomly

This cromebook will randomly freak out. The screen goes completely black or does this weird thing to the screen. When it does this, no other action will work on this cromebook. I have to shut it down every single time. This is so frustrating, it doesn't seem worth it for the price to have this happen so much. Update. We had bought two of these computers and only had the screen issues with one. Now both computers screens randomly shut down. The second computer will go completely black and the only way to get it back is to hard power off and restart the computer. Very disappointed the company and Amazon won't stand behind such an expensive item that is becoming unusable. ... show more
