Description

A New Yorker Best Book of the Year “It may sound peculiar that a story featuring chapter-length text message exchanges and a hysterical egg fight during a gender reveal party could contain such potent, moving allusions to philosophy and James Joyce, let alone be filled with richly observed artistic references reminiscent of Ali Smith, but Newman weaves the analytical and the absurd with a raucous grace. . .Profound—and profoundly sidesplitting.” —Bobby Finger, The New York Times Book Review It's Natwest's last day before he leaves for university, and there's only one thing on his mind: the deeply embarrassing package he ordered to his house—which still hasn't arrived. He won't leave town without it. Any alternative is too distressing to consider. . . This is the story of twenty-four hours in the life of Natwest, and his small-town odyssey in pursuit of the missing package. And yet it's also the story of a middle-aged dentist who dreams of being a respected artist—but the only thing he can seem to paint is the human mouth. And it's the story of a tortured imam involved in a quasi-romantic entanglement with the local vicar; and an octogenerian mourning the death of her secretive husband; and a troubled teenager whose nudes have leaked on the internet. It's the story of Natwest's obnoxious ex-boyfriend, and his class-traitor mother and her childhood boyfriend, and the life-changing secrets he knows about Natwest's past. Alternating between Natwest's idiosyncratic inner world and the perspectives of the other characters—and dazzling in its energy, imagination and originality—this is an outrageously funny and tenderly moving story about being connected to everyone and everything at all times; about love, friendship, and the lies we tell ourselves; about unhappy endings, happy endings—and whether anything really is as simple as one or the other. • Good book but too long
Format: Kindle
Very inventive and funny. But the relentless untender, loveless, explicit sex was sad, too repetitive and way too much.

  • Fun Book
Format: Hardcover
The book was a fun read, loved the characters and the story line.

  • Quite boring..
Format: Kindle
Not entertaining. I wish I had bought cat litter instead.

  • Not for me
Format: Kindle
Wish I’d have stopped reading much sooner after my gut told me not to keep going. This book was not written for me. That’s ok. I just wish I knew that before digging in. IMO: Not funny. Bleak. Unlike-able protagonist. Graphic. Explicit. Why so much emphasis on sad teenage sex on a bench in a cemetery? I didn’t get the joke of this book. ... show more

  • Sort of a uni bound Ulysses (the Joyce one )
Format: Kindle
NatWest (a nickname the 25 year old protagonist uses exclusively) did not launch to university on the usual timeline. It is finally happening now. This book is about his final day in his small town. An anxiously awaited package has gone astray and he has to get it before he leaves, and before anyone else can see it. So in a sort of Ulysses like 24 hours we follow NatWest from character to character as he tracks the package. ... show more

  • A fast and worthwhile read
Format: Kindle
I am surprised at some of the reviews here because I found this to be a rather insightful and interesting book. Funny at times, serious and believable. The author often tells of a single event that happened during the day and tells it several times over from the perspective of another character. In our lives, we too often make assumptions about other people but rarely do we know their story. But the author makes that point by giving us that perspective. Kudos to the author who appears to be quite young and yet writes so clearly and cleverly. ... show more

  • Bad choice
Format: Kindle
Not funny-not sensual- not insightful-dismal ending

  • Terrible
Format: Hardcover
I read this for a book club and would not have finished it if I hadn't had to discuss it. Cardboard characters in meandering, pointless scenes. Pretentious digressions on art. The novel seems like a tribute to Joyce but is vastly inferior.
