I bought this to carry in my car for securing my gun when going where it is not allowed. It is fairly heavy duty which is a good thing. I have several other small safes and I never realized how lightly built they were until I got this Hornady safe. It is fantastic the way it can be opened with an RFID (included) tag that I put inside my phone case as well as by a combination that you can set yourself as well as a key (only needed really if the batteries go down). I had a little trouble getting it programmed which may have been my fault or may have been slightly confusing instructions. (I'd hardly ever admit to it being my fault). I was all set to call the company but luckily it was after they had closed and so I tried one more time guessing at what was being said. It worked like a charm! The fact that it comes with a bracelet is nice. The RFID tag is opposite the clasp and foolish me I kept trying to make it work with the clasp. The cable that comes with it is quite strong and relatively thick. It makes the cables on my other small safes look like cheap wire (and I thought before they were pretty good). The wide variety of ways to open this safe make this a real winner along with how well built it seems to be. As an add on it comes with 2 RFID tags, and RFID key fob, a bracelet (with RFID) and if you are using it indoors in a fixed position a plug in so you don't have to use batteries (or you can). Very complete set-up and very well designed.

Re: 4800KP. No photos because what I received looks just like those in the listing. My biggest complaint, so far, is its not black. Its gray. The plastic control panel on the top is black, but the metal box is gray. More on that in a bit. Things that were important to me in my purchase decision: (1) RFID for quick access, (2) 14-gauge steel for sturdiness (still won't hold up to a battery powered angle grinder with a cutting wheel but hey, what portable safe will?), (3) Numeric keypad for when I don't have my key or my RFID on me, (4) Good old-fashioned key lock and, (5) NOT biometric. Fingerprints can be compelled. What's in your mind cannot. Set up: I didn't have 4 AA batteries at my disposal, so I plugged it in for programing. RFID programing was stupid simple. With the safe open, press the red button then hold one of the 4 provided RFID devices over the illuminated H on the exterior control panel. Successful pairing of an RFID is indicated with two beeps and the lock motor activating. Rinse and repeat for each RFID device. Numeric passcode programming is equally as simple. With the safe open, press the red button then press the numbers on the exterior control panel representing your chosen 4 to 6 digit code then press the illuminated H on the exterior control panel. Successful establishment of your code is indicated by the lock motor cycling. Unlike many, if not most other electronic passcode safes, the Rapid Safe 4800KP only allows 1 numeric code. I suppose this is OK with the reasoning multiple codes are only useful if the safe logs successful entry by code and has some way of sharing with you that log. Otherwise, what's the point? The lid-stop mechanism is not as robust as I would like which I will explain in a bit. Unlike the 2600KP and the 2700KP which have a hooped metal latch, that presumably limits the opening of the lid when it comes into contact with an internally welded pin, the 4800KP uses a short wire cable between a pin on the lid and a pin on the case secured with cotter pins (both sides). With this set up I presume the cotter pins could be removed, and the lid would open 180°. I don't see the benefit of this change over the 2600kp and 2700kp. I do see the benefit, just not as a change from the smaller safes. Now as to why I am disappointed in it being gray, not black, and the cable stay versus a metal loop stay. First of all the item is described and black. Its not. That's at best misleading and at worst deceptive. Many of Hornady's competitors offer safes in multiple colors. My point is that design, color included, as well as finish (matte, satin, gloss, etc.), are selling points. I wanted a matte black safe because I am mounting it to the overhead shelf in a camper van and that shelf is a powder coated matte black. I wanted the safe to stand out less and blend in more. Hide in plain sight, so to speak. Now for the cable stay. I will be bolting the 4800KP upside-down, on the underside of the shelf over the cabin of the van. Effectively, the safe will be an overhead locked glovebox. In this overhead position the lid, which is spring loaded, will carry the ~3 lb. contents of the safe and as such, I would like to see a more robust connection between the lid and the case body. I will Jerry rig something, probably a nylon strap, to prevent the lid from dropping too forcefully and breaking the cable or the pins it connects to, in the event I forget to hold onto the lid while it drops open. Amazon does not allow purchasers to rate with decimals (1.7, 4.9, etc.), I give this product a 5 on receipt. The negatives I have are use case and not so much product related. As said, this will be mounted in a vehicle, upside down, so time will tell if it holds up. And one last thing: Safe was supposed to be signed for at delivery. It wasn't. USPS just left it on the porch.

I purchased this gun safe to put under the seat of my car. I already have a polymer version but wanted something more robust. This safe is very robust, heavy and secure. The two issues I have had with it are due to it being used in a vehicle. First, the cable does not latch into the safe. It drops into a slot and it often falls out when opening and closing the safe. Countless times I have closed the safe and then realized the cable is not attached and must then re-open it and put the cable back in. I am going to try to zip tie the cable and see if that helps. The second problem is much more serious. After about 2 months of the safe riding around in my car it stopped working and I was only able to open/close it with the key. I opened up the safe and disassembled the lock mechanism. Once I did that I could see that one of the battery cable connections had disengaged from the control board. They put glue on them but this connector had glue in the wrong place. My solution was to use RTV and put a blob on each connector. Once I did that the safe started working and has not failed since.

This does its job and is very useful for those unexpected “gun free” zones. The cable is not going to keep a determined thief from stealing it, but a vehicle is not the place to store a firearm anyways. The code is easy to enter, and it comes with many different RFID means of entry. I just put an RFID sticker on my key fob, and I have a safe in both of my vehicles now.
