Description

If you like open world games, this is one of the best. I enjoy the main story, the side quests, and just exploring and leveling up. Sometimes it's just fun to practice defeating the enemies, be it human or robo-dinos. The game is just as good as the original, and even better with additional moves and features and incredibly fast loading times on the PS5. And the graphics are incredible. There are some glitchy spots but only a few and very minor. Nothing that has gotten in the way of my playing the game. Aloy, the female protagonist, is one of my favorite characters that I've played over the past 40 years. And the characters that you interact with are most great characters. A few might be annoying, but essential to character and story development. The weapons and defensive elements in the game are well designed, and so are the level up mechanics. Defeating enemies takes some strategy this time because if you aren't careful, some machine parts can't be picked up as they will be destroyed. I can just sit and play for hours on end, and just get drawn into this world, or I can play for 30 minutes to complete a level up quest or whatever. The game can be overwhelming if this is your first open world game. But remember to do the quests and level up your gear, and learn the moves in the melee pits and the hunting grounds. And have fun!

Great game, but still buggy.

I was patiently waiting for this game to come out after playing the original (Zero Dawn) to about 95%. First the bad: from day 1, lots of quests are bugged. Instruction says ‘talk to xyz’ and the prompt to engage in conversation never shows up. Or you complete the quests before the specific challenge is issued, and the game is stuck. Most of the time, you can ‘unstuck’ the game by finding the nearing fire camp, saving your game, and immediately reloading the save game. Some of those though, are really far away from fire camps, and you end up having to fight the same machines again… it’s a little frustrating. Another thing that has change is the introduction to a lot more combos for fighting. Valor, special combo based on weapons are hard to handle, and the timing of those combo is very tight. It takes a while to get used to. And the ‘skill tree’ is now super complicated. I can see how it would appeal to certain types of gamers, but I found it off putting. And finally the ending was not quite as epic as I expected (still good, but I was expecting a grandiose finale) Now the good: plenty of side quests that are interesting at building the story. Lots of dialog you can follow to get into the story. And Guerrilla is working hard to fix those bugs (almost weekly patches - takes a while to install on ps5, probably similar on ps4) The game is visually beautiful (the only real glitch is when you have the ability to move fast across the plane and see far at the same time — no spoilers — when a lot of the environment pops). The game is fun, forces you into new strategies based on the skills you have and the environmental conditions. My favorite part was sneaking into rebel camps and taking enemies silently and/or sniping them from above/below… Overall, it’s an almost great game. It is almost as good as the first one. For those of you trying to get 100%, there will be a lot of running around back and forth across the map… but don’t rush to play it, as the bugs are quite frustrating… I hope they’ll fix more and more as time goes on… and make it into the great game it can be!

Worth the full price

Admittedly, I didn't play the first game (though I plan to after completing Forbidden West) but wanted to see how it would perform on PS5. The story, graphics, and play really blew me away. There was enough tidbits/callbacks to events from the first game that I didn't feel lost. I'm the type of player who enjoys side missions, open world exploration, and finding loot so Forbidden West really ticked off all of those boxes. The game is pretty dialogue heavy (nowhere near the the amount the last few Assassin's Creed games were), but you're able to skip through if needed. Because I'd do some exploring before side missions, there were quite a few times a side mission would reference an area or group and Aloy's dialogue would interrupt with "oh, I've already been there/defeated them/etc". Three downsides for me were: -There are some side missions you MUST complete to get specific gear which will really help progress both the main storyline and key side missions. Unfortunately you don't really realize it until you're at some critical moments in a main mission or side mission -The jump mechanics can be a bit glitchy or not make sense (ex: Aloy couldn't jump onto a ledge that's easily reachable, but the game would let me jump her through a bunch of trees at an angle to reach an area that technically wasn't climbable) -The main storyline, once you really start focusing on it, is pretty short/not as extensive as the side missions seem to be If you really want to drag out the game, do a mix of side and main missions. As you continue to explore the world, you'll have to go back to areas you've already been several times (prompted by side missions or to see if a side mission will activate/become available). Definitely worth the full price, and hopefully the DLC will drop soon!

Beautiful open world game.

I’ve played around 2 hours and I already know this is GOTY material. I’m a veteran gamer. I was playing Counter Strike when I was in elementary school. I’ve played countless open world games. I know quality when I see it. The dev’s put their heart and souls into creating these beautiful landscapes and story. **********************UPDATE*********************** After putting in some 10 hours now. The TL:DR is if you enjoyed the first game. You’ll love this. Many quality of life changes. Buy it. More machines to figure out to hunt. More wild life to hunt. 6 different skill Trees. Warrior for spear, trapper for your deploying traps and casters, Hunter for my personal favorite the Bows. Survivor for health, infiltrator if you’re a sneaky type of person, and machine master for upgrading how long overrides last and what machines you’re capable of overriding. Each of these skill trees have special active skills you can use to bolster many of Aloys powers, so the versatility in what you can with this new skill tree is a definite step up from the first. I find myself getting lost and following where the game takes me, it takes me hours to actually get to the quest I have active at the time. Can’t say 10/10 yet because I can’t seem to actually get to the main quest because the side quest and other things you can do are so engaging. Oh, the climbing can be a bit janky, but it’s tolerable. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Must have for any Open World RPG lover. Or any PS5 owner at that.

Amazing game

Absolutely stunning game. I rarely pre-order but I did with this and I don’t regret it. I loved Horizon Zero Dawn and am always a bit nervous when there’s a sequel to a beloved game but this sequel did not disappoint! It has all the love and care that the first game has and continues with an amazing, well thought out plot. They delve a bit deeper into character dynamics and growth and seeing Aloy actually accept and admit that she needs/wants help was great. The game creators and writers do an excellent job of organically creating growth in the characters. I can’t say enough good things about the game. I loved it and without giving much away, I cannot wait for whatever follow up to Forbidden West there is. PS 5 didn’t disappoint either. It played beautifully and was stunningly rendered. All around 5/5 stars. Do play it folks, it’s a gem.

Incredible From Top to Bottom

This game was one of my favorite that I’ve ever played! The graphics alone are incredible, but the gameplay, story, and sheer size of the world of horizon forbidden west make this game sensational! I loved exploring every nook and cranny of the open world. The side quests are meaningful and unique so nothing feels like a “grind”. The story is captivating and emotional. It builds upon everything that was horizon zero dawn, but expands the narrative in such an imaginative way! I feel like so many questions from the first game we’re answered, and the ending leaves room for another sequel that I’m sure promises to be the best yet! I’d give this game 10 stars if I could. It’s just so good.

A fantastic sequel, but not without issues

Horizon II: Forbidden West is a great sequel, but it's a bit heavy-handed and potentially burdened with making sure everything from the first game is bigger and more robust. It does a lot of things really well and overall it's a very fun, enjoyable, and even emotional game. But it also gets in it's own way and has a number of systems at work that, in my opinion, just clog up the moment-to-moment gameplay. It's a good open-world game that, in my opinion, doesn't need to be open. If told as a linear story with tight pacing I think the game would SHINE. But, open-world RPG is popular, so here it is. This game takes off shortly after the events of Horizon: Zero Dawn and sets you on a quest of ridding the world of a 'blight' that is killing local fauna and is rapidly spreading. That short-term goal is pretty quickly set aside for a much larger and wildly unexpected plot. Aloy finds new allies and reunites with old allies to combat a new threat, all while doing the shoot-robot-dinosaurs-in-an-open-world thing. The new "Forbidden West" is a fantastic environment. The map size is large, and honestly I think too large for its own good. It's got a lot of variety in it, however. Desert plains, snowy mountain ranges, lush jungles, rough ocean water, sunken cities, redwood forests; it's very well represented as a smash-up of everything west of the Rockies. The game looks beautiful on PS5 (I played in 'performance' mode). I'm primarily a PC gamer but keep a PlayStation around for the exclusives, and this really does live up to some of the best fidelity I've seen on PC in recent years. Character models are great and I really like how well represented and diverse they are, with characters having real skin flaws and believable texture. Speaking of characters, they have improved the most since the original Horizon game. Characters have much more development, their own arcs, worthwhile dialog, and real motivations. It's quite clear that they've been motion captured and face captured for their performances this time around with a lot of expressiveness coming through during animation. Zero Dawn's animation and cutscenes were stiff and rudimentary; this is drastically improved with Forbidden West and I genuinely liked interacting with my allies because they felt like real friends. Over the course of the game you end up building a 'crew' and working out of a 'base' -- it actually felt a lot like Mass Effect and the Normandy. The main plot has some twists and turns, but follows a familiar formula. "Go here, get these things, build the base up, build your team up, get the bad guy, something goes wrong, rally your team, get the bad guy for real this time." There's a pretty significant revelation in the first quarter or so of the game that really shifts the tone and resets the stakes. The gameplay hasn't changed since the first game. There are a handful of new weapon types, some I liked and others I didn't. Upgrading weapons, armors, and pouches is handily the the worst mechanic in the game. It feels monotonous and uninspired, especially since some materials required for the crafting are found only in certain sections of the game. This may require a ridiculous amount of backtracking or fast-traveling and running around to find that ONE rabbit that drops the ONE pelt you need. An upgrade system with a single 'currency' would be more straightforward and preferable. Combat remains similar to Zero Dawn, but there's a little more variation in the way encounters can be approached. Ultimately it always comes down to shooting enemies over-and-over until they go down and doing lots of silly-looking dodge rolls while healing. There's new elemental attacks as well, with certain enemies being more 'strong' or 'weak' to certain elements. And unless you can remember all 30+ enemies and what their strength and weakness are you're going to be 'scanning' them A LOT. I put about 40 hours into the game to complete it and left a lot of side quests unfinished and lots of areas of the map unexplored, mostly because I was becoming bored and wanted to advance the story (the best part of the game, really) to see it unfold. It's easy to out-level the story content if you do a reasonable amount of side objectives. I encountered just a couple of bugs, only one of which actually broke progression and I had to restart a save. More often I was just frustrated with things like combat mechanics and climbing mechanics that didn't behave like I was expecting or wanted to. My absolute biggest gripe actually comes from Aloy's internal monologue; this woman talks to herself (or you, the player) CONSTANTLY and is giving hints to puzzles or environmental obstacles before I've even had a chance to assess them. The hand-holding and tutorialization is radically excessive. Overall I really enjoyed my time with Horizon II: Forbidden West. The story is honestly quite good and well-written, leaving a very clear set-up for a sequel. It's absolutely worth playing; it's a great game but has some issues.

Can’t recommend enough

Unbelievably gorgeous and incredibly vast open-world game. Horizon:Zero Dawn absolutely blew me away with its rich original story, beautiful environments and downright fun and satisfying gameplay. Horizon: Forbidden West pleasantly surprises by taking on the seemingly impossible task of actually living up to its predecessor. Forbidden West takes full advantage of the expanded capabilities of the next gen consoles with detailed textures and a massive landscape. Of course it doesn’t forget to add some new and challenging giant robots to take down along the way. If you are a gamer or just a general fan of sci-fi and great storytelling, I can’t recommend this title enough.
