  • The beginnings of a great epic story in an epic scale and beautiful setting
I am honestly amazed that this movie hasn't gotten better reviews. Perhaps it is a sad commentary on the quick-fix mentality of much of our modern culture. The filming, and the scenery, are beautiful. The storylines are well written and pull you along with believable and interesting characters. The scenes of action and otherwise give a very realistic feel. My only complaint is that it would be nice to have some more characters who display real Christian concern and virtue... which I would think would have been more prevalent at that time than now... even out west. Overall, I really hope the other chapters will all be released in 4K. Based on this first section, I believe this series of films will end up being considered one of the great classics of film history. ... show more

  • Fantastic Movie - Now I can watch all I want over and over!
The beauty of the background is unimaginable. I saw the original in theatres June 28, the beauty inspired me to go to Montana to see for the first time live. I fell in love with the state. The movie portrays the vastness well, the ruggedness, and the fantasy landscape. I loved seeing the women and men and actors. Amazing job, and of course Kevin is as beautiful as a man should be at his age. Loved the movie and stories. I just hope the rest comes to the big screen soon. ... show more

  • Buyer beware: Part 2 is possibly never coming
This movie is really very good. It's not action packed, but the storytelling is great. It follows multiple characters through various stories all happening around the same time. It was shot and released with the intention of it being a 4 part saga, so this is mainly giving the audience a big set-up for things to come. It was perhaps overly ambitious to stake the success of such a thing on box office sales, because that is the main reason that Part 2 did not release in August 2024 as planned. Part 2 is finished, and was screened at a film festival, so there's a chance it'll be available to rent or buy digitally... but I wouldn't count on the full saga to come anytime soon. ... show more

  • The movie itself was good. Amazon not so good
The Digital copy was missing and the disc looked used. Amazon refunded it and “will refund the difference” after I repurchase it since it’s no longer on sale. I know it’ll require talking to customer service again to get my money back. As for the movie, it’s much better than so many Costner directed disasters. It’s long, but doesn’t feel like it. The storyline kinda goes in and out of different characters and towards the end there’s this huge montage of scenes that makes no sense. The sequence was off a bit, but tolerable. I know they were trying to squeeze as much in and understandably so. The end was more of a preview of the what’s-next-to-come in the sequels, but I think it’s sloppy and confusing. Overall, it’s 4 stars. I don’t know how true-to-life the story is, but it seems to be a good description of that time period. The cowboying and countryside locations were enjoyable to watch. ... show more

  • An underrated western
The negative reviews didn't bother me in this case, certain points that were point out are understandable but I still appreciate Kevin Costner's effort in trying to make the best film possible. It certainly is different from a lot of westerns we got from the past. The film definitely is more darker than most of the classics we've seen. The length of the film I think it was well planned out. I didn't have a problem with the plot going back and forth. In conclusion, I'm curious to see more where the chapters in the future are going. Most audiences might not understand Kevin Costner's work now but through time it will slowly be appreciated more. ... show more

  • Not Costner’s Best
Wanted to like this first part. Too long, really drug out. No characters you can really care about, lots of violence, just not interesting. Scenery and showing the beauty of that part of the United States was excellent. Maybe the next chapter will be better.

  • Pay Attention As The Action Is Fast and All Tied Together
The "Old West" was a violent place. The settlers, natives and military were all defending their own. The Indians were defending their way of life. The settlers were trying to make a life in a hostile world. The military was trying to do as much as possible with few men. You must watch everything as so much of the action and events is tied together over time. Violence was common with many killed or wounded. Life was rough. Life was tough. This is the first half of the Horizon story. ... show more

  • Jumbled mess
It has to many stories going at the same time. Many scenes dragged on. The biggest problem is there wasn't one person you were rooting for. No character you felt empathy for. Where Dancing with Wolves, when the wolve gettings killed brought tears to everyones eyes because we all loved his loyalty. The family unit of Indians was great, as was the love story. The colors and scenery were clear and beautiful. Same with Open Range. I truly expected more from Kevin Costner. At the end of Horizon movie, they shows fast forward preview of Horizon 2. I couldn't believe it was as bad as critics said, until I watched it. Other people loved it, we weren't among them ... show more
