  • This is what gouache is supposed to be This is what gouache is supposed to be
I used (read: struggled with) Windsor and Newton gouache for years, and lost interest repeatedly after the tubes dried up. But Holbein is sooooooo much nicer. The colors don't change in value and chroma after drying the former, and they are much richer and more vibrant. Every work I created with WN stuff seemed somehow very pastel, despite whatever presentation I was trying to achieve. With Holbein, I can actually paint, knowing what it will look like as I do it. The colors blend far better, they later better, and even glazing seems far easier to aching using this product. I previously purchased 2 each of the basic mixing set and the set of 5 colors, 5mm sets. I found the basic mixing set made it easy to mix the vast majority of colors I used to buy, burnt sienna, for example. And I SUCK at mixing colors! With Holbein gouache, I feel like it's second nature. It just makes the whole painting process FAR more enjoyable, and the end results keep getting remarks from viewers that I rarely if ever got using WN gouache. This stuff apparently leaves out the chalk, or whatever it is that WN uses to make their gouache paints opaque. They don't seem to be so pasty and pale after they dry, and, once dry, takes far more effort to lift the paint, should you decide to add a glaze here and there. I have been a big proponent of WN products for a long time. I use their watercolors, gouache, and oil paints. However, I won't be buying any more of either, as long as the Holbein products are available to me. They are really just that good. ... show more

  • Best Gouache so far!
Okay honestly, this is the best gouache I’ve tried so far. The price is a little hefty but honestly I see why. They are very great. I’m just a beginner but I can definitely tell the difference. The coverage is amazing, the quality, and the mixing as well. They are very smooth and creamy. Also re wets very well too ... show more

  • Worthy upgrade
I did some research to upgrade my Talens gouache to something better for illustration, Holbein was in the top spots on all the rankings I found, and with reason. Is a very, very good gouache. Color saturation, flow, fluidity, coverage. All excellent. Is already changing the way I illustrate, you can almost use it like watercolor if needed without any pigment loss. However as with any quality product is of a higher price, and while is perfectly justified, I'll suggest only to buy it if you already now what are you doing. If you are starting, there are a lot of very good brands that will be perfect for beginners, like Talens or Winsor & Newton. The 24 set, while just a part of all the colors Holbein produce, is a very good selection and a solid foundation for anything you will want to create. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Fantastic paint!
I was a watercolor fan, but wanted some ability to paint with opacity, but not to the point of acrylic or oil. Then I discovered gouache! I ordered this set after researching reviews and I was not disappointed! These paints are amazing! Used straight from the tube or with minimal water, they are opaque, but watered down, you can get more of a watercolor effect. The color payoff is excellent. I painted the ultramarine blue with little water and it was so beautiful, it looked like velvet on the paper. If you are considering this set, don’t hesitate. You won’t be disappointed!! ... show more

  • Pure joy to paint with this gouache Pure joy to paint with this gouache
This is a pure pleasure to work with this gouache. Few of the paints include fluorescent pigments in it, which I personally don't like, but I seem to understand that it helps to provide colours we are used to in our times. I love this set mostly for this reason, that it is so well balanced, and all paints blend well: to all who want to start their journey with gouache: may it be Your first set. ... show more

  • Beautiful!
These are great! I swatched them and they are beautiful and vibrant! They're so pretty (and pricey) I'm afraid to use them. 🤣 I mean They're still probably gonna be the cheapest you will find this set. That's just the nature of these paints. Everyone says they're like -THE BEST- though. We'll see I guess. When I finally get brave enough to use them. 🤣 ... show more

  • Bright, intense colors
These gauche paints are sold for beginners, but they are also suitable for more accomplished artists. They are very smooth coming out of the tube, but can be easily re-wetted when dry. They are reasonably opaque and seem to be highly pigmented.

  • Not good at all.
Watched tons of reviews about this paint and everyone touting how good it is. Only to be massively disappointed, yes the colors are good. But the consistency of the paint and how quick it drys are terrible. Feels like you need an iron fist to get the paint to move, and if you add water it moves to easily and has to much pigment where you cannot get good layering without turning it into water color. This paint sucks. Not quite water color not quite acrylic not quite guache. Very disappointing ... show more
