Description

If you've never flown a radio controlled (RC) aircraft before, the Carbon Cub S 2 is the most versatile, capable and easiest to fly scale RC airplane yet! Based on the Carbon Cub by CubCrafters, an upgraded and thoroughly modern iteration of the classic Super Cub, and equipped with Horizon Hobby's exclusive and innovative SAFE technology, this scale replica makes it possible for almost anyone to learn to fly successfully. The durable EPO airframe is equipped with an efficient brushless motor along with a telemetry-capable ESC plus a factory-installed flight controller, receiver and servos. The taildragger landing gear with oversized "tundra" style tires and a steerable tailwheel make it possible to take off from and land on a wide variety of surfaces from pavement to grass and even gravel. Or optional floats (sold separately) can be installed for takeoffs from and landings on water. Best of all, the option to add SAFE Plus GPS-enabled technology and the Landing Assist Sensor (LAS) makes learning to fly even easier than ever before! LEARN TO FLY SUCCESSFULLY Welcome to the exciting world of RC (Radio Controlled) flight! If you've ever dreamed of taking to the skies, Horizon Hobby has you covered. We are committed to engineering aircraft that you can learn to fly with successfully even if you've never flown RC before. Every HobbyZone aircraft we offer features industry-leading design and technology developed by experts to keep you in control and learning at your own pace so you can turn your dreams of flight into a reality! The HobbyZone Carbon Cub S 2 is the easiest to fly, most capable and versatile scale trainer RC airplane yet! It's equipped with exclusive SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology that helps to prevent overcontrol, loss of orientation and crashes so nearly everyone can learn to fly successfully. Beginner, Intermediate and Experienced modes allow you to choose the level of stability and control you need, or are ready to try, at the flip of a switch. And you can instantly return to steady flight using Panic Recovery with the push of a button in any flight mode. Oversized "tundra" tires make it possible to take off from and land on a variety of surfaces including thick grass, gravel paths, dirt trails and smooth pavement, or you can install the optional floats to fly from water—which adds to its unmatched versatility and capabilities. The Carbon Cub S 2 is equipped with a 30-amp telemetry-capable ESC that provides a variety of real-time power system related telemetry data including motor RPM, current, battery voltage and more to compatible Spektrum AirWare equipped transmitters, and even approximate flight battery power remaining via multiple LEDs on the DXS transmitter included with the RTF Basic version. And you have the option to easily upgrade to SAFE Plus GPS-enabled technology that offers features such as AutoLand and Virtual Fence, along with the option to install the Landing Assist Sensor (LAS) that automatically "flares" for smoother landings, to make learning to fly—and to land safely—easier than ever! The Ready-To-Fly (RTF) Basic version includes everything needed to fly in one box except for a battery and charger. This allows you to choose a convenient and money-saving Spektrum Powerstage bundle or the separate battery and charger you prefer! Plus the included Spektrum DXS 2.4GHz transmitter can be used with other Bind-N-Fly (BNF) and BNF Basic aircraft after you learn to fly successfully! A BNF Basic version is also available for experienced pilots who want to use their favorite Spektrum transmitter along with batteries and chargers they may already own. And for both versions, the powerful and efficient brushless power system including a telemetry-capable ESC, flight controller, receiver and servos, are all factory-installed in the durable EPO airframe that assembles quickly and easily without the need for glue or special tools. And the fun doesn't stop after you learn how to fly! In the Experienced Mode, the Carbon Cub S 2 is capable of performing aerobatic maneuvers including loops, rolls, inverted (upside down) flight and more. You can even use the same DXS transmitter that's included with the RTF Basic version, along with the same battery and charger you use for the Carbon Cub, to fly a variety of BNF Basic version "Next Step" aircraft including the E-flite T-28 Trojan 1.1m, the Valiant 1.3m and others! In The Box Needed to Complete Includes a Spektrum DXS controller/transmitter equipped with industry-leading DSMX 2.4GHz technology and everything else you need to fly except for a rechargeable lithium polymer (LiPo) battery and charger for the airplane. The Carbon Cub S 2 1.3m is equipped with a telemetry-capable ESC that can provide a variety of real-time power system related telemetry data to compatible transmitters. This includes approximate flight battery power remaining via multiple LEDs and audible alerts from the DXS transmitter included with the RTF Basic version. It will also provide motor RPM, current, overall battery voltage and more to Spektrum AirWare equipped transmitters (including the DX6e and 8e, DX6 G2/G3 and 8 G2, the DX9, the NX6, 8 and 10, the iX12, iX20 and others) while you fly. Construction with advanced EPO material delivers a lightweight yet durable airframe that's tough enough to handle everyday flying punishment without getting bent out of shape. And in the unfortunate event you damage any airframe parts or components and can't repair them, a full line of replacement parts is readily available. The Carbon Cub S 2 arrives mostly factory-assembled with the power system, servos, flight controller and receiver installed. All you need to do is finish some quick and easy final assembly, without the use of glue or special tools, and you'll be ready to fly in less time than it takes to charge a battery! Thick grass, gravel paths, dirt trails; you can fly from these and many other surfaces that are impossible for most models of this size to handle. The robust landing gear is equipped with oversized tires that soak up the bumps of rough surfaces and provide excellent prop clearance. The optional float set (HBZ7390, sold separately) takes just a few minutes to install and all the necessary hardware is included with the aircraft and float set so you can fly from lakes and ponds. Functional flaps are an option for improved slow speed handling and even shorter takeoffs and landings. This feature requires a 7+ channel computer transmitter plus a flap servo and a servo extension (sold separately). The Spektrum Landing Assist Sensor (LAS) is easy to install and provides automatic "flare" control to help inexperienced pilots "grease" landings by minimizing or completely eliminating bouncing (works over many/most surfaces and provides optimum performance when flying over/landing in grass). With quick and easy installation of the optional Spektrum GPS Module (SPMA3173; sold separately), you can add next-level autonomous guidance features that make it even easier to learn to fly. With SAFE Plus added, you get: AutoLand Activated by simply holding down a button, the advanced AutoLand function puts the airplane on a stabilized approach to land on its own near the GPS initialization point. You can even provide some directional guidance to avoid obstacles or to adjust the approach while letting the system do the rest to execute a safe landing. As your skills progress and you gain more confidence, you can take over more control inputs, eventually learning to land without any assistance from the automated system. Holding Pattern This beneficial SAFE Plus-exclusive feature allows you to "pause" the flight by putting the airplane into a GPS-guided holding pattern. When activated with the quick press of a button, the aircraft will automatically return to a position above the GPS initialization point and circle until the command is canceled with another quick press of the button. It's a great way to safely hand the controls off to a friend or regain visual contact if you ever lose sight of the model. Virtual Fence It's easy to accidentally let an RC airplane fly too far away, but with Virtual Fence, worry no more! It creates an invisible boundary the airplane won't fly past. When the plane reaches this boundary, it will automatically turn around and fly back toward the GPS initialization point. Then it will "wag" the wings to let you know when you have control again. Flight School Qualifying Trainer This trainer model qualifies for use in the Horizon Hobby Flight School. As a trainer, this plane needs minimal preparation to be flight-ready. It also includes SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology to help new pilots control their models. Purchase this item along with a three-month AMA trial membership to get started. LEARN TO FLY SUCCESSFULLY We are committed to engineering aircraft that you can learn to fly with successfully even if you’ve never flown RC before. Every HobbyZone aircraft we offer features industry-leading design and technology developed by experts to keep you in control and learning at your own pace so you can turn your dreams of flight into a reality!

  • Incredibly easy to fly, will teach you to become an RC Pilot
The Carbon Cub S 2 1.3m RTF Basic RC airplane is probably the best trainer in existence in my opinion. The wings can remove but you have to disconnect the ailerons, flaps, and lights if you add them (it fits in the trunk of my Honda without removing them - I prefer to transport it in one piece. This is more than a great foam flier; it is also impressively integrated with the transmitter and the receiver is connected to a complex multi-axis gyro that will keep your plane in the air during moments you are not able to do so. I recently retired and my primary goal was to find an RC airplane I enjoyed flying every day. While I had hoped to return to the balsa planes I built 40 years ago, I find I am very satisfied with hassle-free electric power that starts up immediately. The CCS2 is the perfect first airplane. I flew mine 3-4 times every day (unless it was raining) for 18 months with only one crash due to a part that eventually failed on the airplane. I replaced the part, and prop and it darted back into the sky…. The plane is extremely forgiving with pilot input and is also very easy to repair. You may want to invest in a hot glue gun and some barbeque skewers for major repairs. SAFE allows you the joy of flying while reducing the fear of crashing to almost zero. For the first year, I flew exclusively in SAFE mode and then started flying in Intermediate mode when things seemed calm, hurriedly switching back to SAFE as I got into trouble. Eventually, I learned how to fly without any gyros or autopilot and the plane flies wonderfully in advanced mode. It can do loops, rolls, stalls, inverted flight. The plane is probably capable of many more stunts but often I am not an advanced pilot. The CCS2 is very easy to assemble with no experience needed. I purchased a new set of small screw drivers (0, 1, 2, & maybe 3) and a mini needle nose that proved quite helpful. I would advise not installing the flaps until you are comfortable with the plane (I waited one year from purchase date). All you need to buy is a single servo for the flaps already exists in the RTF transmitter. At some point I added a strip of lights powered by the RC battery and flight control system. I added a switch so I can simply turn them on as starts to get dark. The transmitter shows you the state of charge for the airplane battery via 4 green LEDS. With all 4 green you have 100%, when it drops to 3 you have 75%... After the final LED the transmitter emits a sound and the motor turns on/off to squeeze remaining battery power but somehow it still has enough energy to fly along if needed. Surprisingly, advanced RC planes and systems use a simple timer which is not connected to the state of charge although telemetry is now possible. It is surprising this comes for free on the Carbon Cub 2S. I recommend the simulator as well. It is quite realistic and when the rain is falling that is how I get into the air. Enjoy! ... show more

  • OMG! This is the funnest RC Airplane I've ever owned. Great for beginners!
I am getting back into RC Airplanes and haven't flown since I was a teenager. I'm retired now. That should give you an idea of how long I've been away. I was excited to hear about this new technology that stabilizes the planes. It's called SAFE. SAFE is really amazing. It keeps the plane stable in the attitude and direction you want to fly. It doesn't fly the airplane. So it's not foolproof. As long as you have a general idea of how an airplane works and you have a good open area, you're going to be pleasantly surprised how easy this airplane is to fly. SAFE has 3 levels, Easy, Advanced, and Off. Off being you're on you're on your own, no stabilization. What is cool about SAFE is that it doesn't take anything away from the flying experience. I was surprised how quickly the muscle memory comes back from flying these models but even the best pilot can become disoriented, especially if you get the airplane directly overhead. The cool thing is if you let go of the controls, the plane will simply level out and continue to fly in the direction it was going. This is awesome if you lose track of it's orientation, especially at a distance. If you have a large open area, you literally don't have to have any experience to get started. Now the plane itself: - High quality, and super durable - Super Stable (SAFE enabled) - Super easy to fly, very forgiving and predictable - Slow and easy landings (big floaty wings) - Big wheels for bouncy but soft landings - Takes off in about 10 ft - Looks amazing out of the box! Con's: - The wing stays attached. It can be removed but the wing struts prevent it from being like a lot of RC Planes where the wing pops on and off. Overall. Amazing airplane! Crazy fun for anyone. Don't hesitate. This airplane is super fun for the experienced or novice pilot. It's also doable for the new pilots if you have enough space. ... show more

  • What a blast!
If you are on the fence just buy it. Worth every penny. My first plane though I did have some flight experience. This is great for learning in beginner mode, fun in intermediate mode and a challenge in expert. If you crash it, just use low temp hot glue and put it back together and keep going. Loving it. Plus you can bind the transmitter to other planes and it saves it. Like the Gee Bee I bought at the same time! No regrets. ... show more

  • Absolutely TERRIBLE!!!
Absolute POS!!! Not worth the price tag. Good design and super cool when it did fly right. I had to get two planes to get one that was even capable of flying. First one the aileron servos were unusable. Amazon was nice enough to send a new one free of charge. That was nice. First flight on grass, caused the battery door as well as the plastic struts on the landing gear to fall of and break?! This was not a perfect landing but it shouldn't have been able to cause that amount of damage landing on grass! The new plane lasted about 4 flights before other noticeable issues started showing up. First issue was while mid flight, the cables inside of the control compartment somehow wrapped themselves around the servo arm for the elevator. That caused it to nose dive into the ground. Thankfully it was flying very slow and low. After that, it lasted for a few more flights but now the rudder and elevator are having issues! This time wasn't as forgiving though. Plane started flying away and the controls were not responding. Landed in a grass field and broke the cowling and scuffs all over the plane itself. There are way better options out there that are worth you money and time! DO NOT BUY THIS! ... show more

  • Easy to assemble and flies very well
This thing actually flies quite well, even in a bit of wind. I started flying RC planes 35 years ago. I had been out of the hobby for a bit, so I wanted to get something simple, docile and not too expensive. This fit the bill nicely. It was easy to put together and took about an hour. Everything is included in this kit, you just need a screwdriver. I had a few sorta hard landings but the plane took it like a champ. Admittedly, I was doing stuff I shouldn't have, and I know better. I did chew up a prop so I bought a replacement one on the HH website for six bucks. You will want to develop some muscle memory in an RC simulator (like RealFlight) before you take this out flying, if you are inexperienced. I tried out the "safe" mode and it does a good job of keeping the plane level. I only tried it out briefly because I'm an experienced pilot so I don't need it. Overall I recommend this airplane. It is not going to win any races, but it flies nice and easy, and is a lot of fun. ... show more

  • Fun at any skill level.
Looks great, flies great, comes ready to fly after some easy assembly. Bring your own battery. Everything about the plane is great. Even the packaging it shipped in was great. I like my big, plump cartoon wheels! It really is a good beginners plane. With AS3X and a panic button it's very forgiving. If you pick up a copy of RealFlight Trainer, and the USB dongle for your computer, and you can practice flying your carbon cub in the simulator. You'll be flying your plane, with the same transmitter you got in the box with your real one. Great way to learn with no risk to your plane. ... show more

  • Nice except battery compartment
My son has many Rc planes. Said this flew well controlled but after doing a steep dive when he pulled up the airplane must have flexed causing the battery door to open and the battery fell out causing immediate crash. Took the crash fairly well considering but no more flying

  • Great plane
I bought this as a Christmas present for my dad, it was very easy to put together, the only issue was that the instructions said to tighten a screw down completely, causing a plastic bracket to rip off of the Rudder. Other than that, the plane flew great and the safety features kept it safe (until my dad inevitably turned them off and decimated the plane by inverting and flying it full throttle straight down into someone's house, the high speed unsurprisingly destroyed the fuselage, but the motor, servos, and other electronics were surprisingly durable for the price) The high and large wings give this plane a ton of stol level lift, which allowed us to fly in and out of small spaces which is always fun, and the option for floats, flaps, and added sensors add nice functionality. ... show more
