I use a flat crimper and a heat gun. That combination worked well for me. I made sure that there's a good mechanical connection before heating. Too much crimp can perforate the plastic. There's a learning curve between not enough crimp and too much. Once figured out, it's simple. For the times that I applied too much crimp, I put a short length of heat shrink tube on top. These are well made and very useful to have around, especially if you do a lot of low voltage wiring. I got these for using both in my car and boat since the heat shrink gives them a water-tight seal and make for a solid connection that can still be disconnected when necessary to perform maintenance, repairs, or upgrades.     • Good connection but not sure it's waterproof

I got these to replace some bullet connectors used for some audio connections. I also did some “experiments” with different sized wires to see if the quality of the connections were the same across connector sizes. One of my “tests” involved 16 gauge solid wire. I had difficulty getting a good crimp with a standard linemans pliers crimp tool. The ad says to make the crimp using the HKS crimp tool. I don’t know if that would make any difference in the security of the crimp, but if it does, you have to figure the cost of their crimping tool into the cost of using these connectors. When I was able to get a good crimp, applying heat to the heat shrink tubing created a REALLY GOOD seal. I believe that part of the connection would definitely be waterproof. But unless you shrink down the tubing over the male and female parts, that point in the connection would NOT be waterproof. And if you did shrink that portion of the connection to make it waterproof (and I’m not sure the pieces mate well enough to have that happen), then you’re going to have to break the melted connection if you need to disconnect the two pieces. In that case, you might as well use a butt connector with heat shrink tubing. These connectors seem well made and the heat shrink tubing provides an excellent seal. However, I found it hard to get good crimps and I’m skeptical that the male to female connection will be waterproof. My applications don’t require the connections to be waterproof so these will work just fine for me, but if you are considering these as a waterproof connection, just beware of the issue I raised, above. ... show more
