Its powerful motor, long-range battery, and comfortable design make it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reliable and versatile electric bike. HOW TO BUY AN E-BIKE: DIFFERENT TYPES The most common types of electric bikes are e-road bikes, e-hybrid bikes and e-mountain bikes. Each bike uses the same principles that I’ve just discussed but in very different ways to excel at their specific challenges. For example, e-mtbs typically use systems with higher torque rating, which is particularly important for riding off-road, especially up steep and technical climbs. With a battery and a motor an e-mtb can effectively operate as an uplift, allowing you to access more descents and feel fresher when you do.Electric hybrid bikes also benefit from this increased acceleration, especially if riding from stopped in traffic. They’ll also allow you to commute further, with less effort and, crucially, less sweat than a normal bike. You can also get e-folding bikes, which offer the portability of a folding bike with the increased distance a battery and motor offers. E-Bike Classifications Electric bicycles come in a range of styles to suit different uses—everything from riding steep mountain trails to getting to and from work. But there are three general categories related to their electric propulsion systems. Each type applies electric power to the bicycle’s driven wheel in a distinct way, whether using input from the rider’s pedals or from a thumb or twist-grip-activated throttle. Deciding which one is best for you depends on how you plan on using the bike, and how far you want to go. Class 1 includes pedal-assist bikes, which power the electric motor as your feet apply pressure to the pedals. There’s no throttle control on the handlebar to get the bike going; the electric part works only when the rider is pedaling, and the e-assist cuts off at speeds above 20 mph. Class 2 bikes also have an electric motor that works up to 20 mph, either while the rider is pedaling (pedal-assist) or with electric propulsion alone, via a throttle control. Class 3 limits an e-bike’s top speed to 28 mph. These faster, more powerful models might not be legal to ride in some areas, such as on bike paths. Of the 16 e-bike models CR tested, seven were in the Class 1 category and nine were in Class 2. We did not test any in Class 3. The prices ranged from $600 to $4,000. The highest-rated e-bikes were also the most expensive we tested, although none was anywhere near the $6,000 to $7,000 high end of the price range consumers are likely to encounter at bike shops. We found that more selectable gears made for a better riding experience once the battery was drained and pedaling provided the only motive power. Single-speed bikes aren’t as versatile. Depending on the model, electric assist was applied either at the hub of the rear wheel or in what’s called a mid-drive, in which power is applied at the bottom bracket, where the pedals are located. Commuter Bikes Commuter bikes are built to serve as practical transportation. They come in a variety of styles, including models with narrow tires and straight handlebars, others with bigger tires and thicker frames, and folding e-bikes that make them easier to stow on a bus or train. For many people, e-bikes represent a much more cost-effective alternative to gas-powered scooters or even a car. Many people like the fact that they can commute on an e-bike without getting too sweaty on the way to work, thanks to the electric-assist, and that they aren’t as likely to get stuck in grinding car traffic. Cruisers Built for comfort, cruisers often share many of the same attributes of commuter bikes. They offer a relaxed, comfortable upright seating position and often a softer ride because of bigger tires and cushier seats. Look for swooping handlebars that keep a rider’s arms at a relaxed distance from the body. The addition of an electric motor to either of these configurations makes it possible to use a thicker frame and wider tires to soak up bumps in the road. Performance Road Bikes Road bikes usually have a lightweight frame, narrow tires, and drop-down handlebars that help the rider maintain an aerodynamic position. Like their pedal-powered counterparts, electric road bikes feature slimmer, lighter components to increase efficiency. The assistance offered by an electric motor makes it possible to cover longer distances and handle steeper grades with less fatigue than with conventional bicycles. Mountain BikesWith beefier frames, bigger tires, and—sometimes—long-travel suspension components, mountain bikes are built to handle trails, large rocks, logs, and other rough terrain and obstacles. The fun part of mountain biking is the faster, more effortless downhill thrill rides, but getting there usually involves a demanding pedal up steep grades on loose terrain. Adding an electric motor to a mountain bike makes a lot of sense for someone who wants the fun without as much fatigue. Cargo Bikes Their strong frames, fat tires, and robust components make cargo bikes the industrial beasts of the two-wheeled world—purpose-built to haul bulky items and extra passengers. Pedal-powered cargo bikes have been around for a while, and the electric versions make it even easier to transport a lot of weight on two wheels. Like their pedal-only forebears, cargo e-bikes can be configured with rear-mounted seats or cargo racks, or front-end cargo boxes supported by one or two wheels. Bicycle taxis can also be included in this group; the two-wheeled models are popular for urban delivery and for ferrying children ... show more

  • Great for riding around the countryside.

I received my Hipeak electric bike basically without a scratch on it. It was well packed as you can see in the pictures. It comes with a set of tools. Also, the battery charger is UL listed. The lithium battery pack is 48 V 15 Ah battery that charges within about seven hours if it needs a full charge. Currently I have 106 miles on the bike and the battery charger and battery pack appear to charge adequately. Charger does get hot so I turn it on its side. I accidentally left it plugged in overnight and there were no problems. Read carefully through the manual. If you want to change some settings, you can change your top speed to 25 mph which I compared to some biking apps and it was within one mile per hour, correct. I also have purchased water bottle holder, Sideview mirrors, storage bag for the back rack that fits it perfectly and holds 10 L of storage. I changed out the seat to a large comfort seat and also added extra lights front and back. This bike has a good front and back light brake lights turn on as soon as you hit the brake levers. Seems to be a very solid, well-built bike. I particularly like the step through for convenience. Disc brakes will most likely need to be manually adjusted but not a problem. Contacting Hipeak Bike support and they responded back quickly within the next business day. They even checked on my FedEx delivery, which had some issues but got resolved. I mainly ride my bike on the paved roads, and it does well on hills as well. The tires do make noise but not that much but allows people to know I’m coming. People, smile and give me the thumbs up when they see my yellow step through Hipeak Bike. Update, June 8, 2023 currently I have 365 miles on my Hipeak Bike code, name, Elias step through. I mainly ride my bike around the country side back Roads paved only. The bike is capable of doing 25 mph. I have a number of hills that I have to go over. It is averaging only 25 miles total. Keep in mind I set my pedal assist to the highest level at all times and I use the throttle to usually start my bike up. Charging usually takes seven hours to fully charge. I studied up using YouTube videos and reading about how to adjust mechanical disc brakes, and I have them working extremely well for me. Yes, they do squeak a little, but not a big deal for me. I also like riding it at night in the dark Around the small towns in my area. I have two lights mounted on the front and back. I also wear a helmet that has strapped on a headlamp with two lights that reach 1200 lm power. I can see everything that I need. If you have any problems with your bike, Just take it to your local E bike shop. And yes, you can slide this bike into the backseat of a full-size sedan. I added a picture of my four-door Chevy sedan just to show you how well it fits in. I believe the measurements are off on the bike in regards to its length folded up. Also added a picture to show you the extra options that I added to the bike. I added an extra large, memory, foam seat, as well as a utility bag for the back rack. I also have three mirrors on the bike as well as a water bottle holder and a bike phone holder which you can see in my second to last picture. Now enjoy your new E bike. ... show more
