I bought that extra spine to ensure protection and covered my irons in socks and weaved a towel through to prevent extra movement. I also used a card board box to surround my clubs at the top. This is my second Himal outdoors Golf travel bag (this one to transport my wife's clubs) and I am still a fan. This is a light but well made sturdy bag with enough space for a regular golf cart bag, a full set of 14 clubs and accessories for a golf trip (including shoes, clothes, balls, tees, etc...).
